The water box is placed at such a height that any ash and elinker will readily pass beneath it. The swinginggate or back may be operated in the following,` ways:
1. rlhe weight 18 may be so adjusted that the lower edge of the back will be continually moved slightly one way or the other so as to allow the ash and clinker to pass beneath it. `When this action is desired the swinging` buck is set near the rear end o't the grate. as shown in Figs. 2 and (3 so that the breaking of th i stoker links will assist in forcing' the ash and clinker beneath the lower edge of the gate. By the breaking7 of the links lwinean the projection ot the edge of one link above the face of the other, where the links pass -Over the rear sprocket wheel and the movingapart or' the ends ot' the links at that point.
2. To ei'ect such an adiustment the lever 19 will rest upon an adjustable stop or support 20, (as shown in Fig. 1) and the weight 18 made heavy enough to prevent the swinging' gate or back from moving under ordinary operating conditions.
3. The swinging gate may be set at a fixed point using' a stop and relieving` device, as in the second method ot operation above described, and the ash and clinker allowed to build up at the rear of the grate. The gate may then be opened from time to time either by hand or by means ot an auto.

lVhat l. claim and desire 'to secure by Let.Y ters Patent ot the United States is:
1. The combination with u chain grate stoker, of a water partition above the rear portion, and a back in the rear of the. water cooled partition extending downwardly below the bottom of the partition to form a deeper obstruction to the passage of material on the grate after it passes beneath the water cooled partition.
2. The combination with a chain grate stoker, of a water partition above the rear portion, and a back in the rear of the water cooled partition extending downwardly below the bottom of the partition to form a deeper obstruction to the passage of material on the grate after it. passes beneath the water cooled partition, the water cooled partition being arranged to protect the support for the back :trom the heat of the tire.
3. A chain grate Stoker having a pivotally mounted back above its rear portion7 and a water cooled partition in iront of the pivoted back arranged to protectit from the heat of the tire, the pivoted back extending downwardly below tho water cooled partition to form a deeper obstruction 'tor the passage of material on the grate after it passes beneath the water cooled partition.
4. rlhe combination with a chain grate smoker, of' a water partition above the rear portion, and a back in the rear of the water cooled partition extending donniwardly below the bottom oithe partition to form a deeper obstruction to the passage of material on the `frate after it passes beneath the water cooled partition, said back consisting of a series of separate replaceable sections.
5. Ilhc combination with a chain grate stoker, ot a water partition located over its rear portion, a pivotally mounted back in the rear of the water partition and extending down below it, a stop to limit the forward movement of the back, and means for holding the back in the forward position as limited by the stop. said means being arranged to yield under :.xtraordinury pressure.
6. The combination with a chain grate Stoker, of a swinging back mounted over its rear portion, stop mechanism 4for limiting the forward swin of the back, and means for r armally hol ing the back in its forward position against the stop, said means being arranged to yield under extraordinary pressure against the back.
7. The combination with a chain grate stoker, of a swinging back mounted over its rear portion, stop mechanism for limiting the forward swing of the back, and means for normally holding the back in its forward position against the stop, said means being arranged to yield under extraordinary pressure against th'e back, said stop mechanism being adjustable to change the position of the lower edge of the back with respect to the grate.
8. The combination with a chain grate Stoker, of a Water partition mounted above its rear portion, said partition comprising a plurality of superimposed water boxes with means for circulating water therethrough, and a back mounted in the rear of the Water boxes and projecting downwardly below the bottom of the lower water box to form a deeper obstruction to the passage of the material on the grate after it passes beneath the lower water box.
9. The combination with a chain grate A Stoker, of a water partition mounted above its rear portion and consisting of a plurality of superimposed water boxes, each box being separately connected to the water circulation of the boiler, and a back supported in the rear of the water boxes-and projecting downwardly below the bottom 'of the lower water box to form a deeper obstruction to the passage of the material on the grate.
l0. rl`he combination with a chain grate Stoker, oi a swinging shaft having a series of separate. depending, replaceable sections rigidly secured thereto, said sections constituting a back to obstruct the passage of material on the grate, and means for yieldingly holding the shaft in position so that the back will obstruct the passage of the material.
