- One of the objects of my invention is toV provide a .device oi" the above-indicated character which shall be simple and compa-ct in construction and readily assembled and taken apart while in position beneath the cab floor of the locomotive Witlioutfrequiring the removal of adjacent apparatus.
Another object of my invention is to provide an improved construction for reventing the leakage of lubricating material from the gear case, while also permitting the removal of the outer and under sides of the c ae without disturbing the rear or motor s1 e.
A furtherl object of 'my invention is to rovide a gear case having means for readily permitting an external temporary `sup port of the pinion shaft, whereby the motor bearings may be removed for inspection or repairs Without necessitating the removal of the gear case. j

Referring to the drawing, the apparatus here shown comprises a 'gear-wheell which is suitably -secured to a jack' shaft or wheel axle 2, 'as the case may be; a plurality of los ber 9 has already been pointed. out. Although l have shown my gear case as eomprisinggsix separate members fastened together in a certain manner, it will be un.F derstoodthat the structure need not involve all thejdctails illustrated. For example, for convenience in manufacture and installation, the outer Walls 13 of the members 7 and 8 are made separate and are bolted toether, whereas, in some cases, it may be desirable to have these members in one piece or to merely provide them with overapping edges and dispense with the bolts.

I claim as my invention:
1. 2. A gear-incasing device comprising a side-wall having Van inwardly bent peripheral extension of substantially L-sliape in section and a straight wall portion ceoperating therewith to collectively constitute a member of substantially Ujshape in ist section.
3. A gear-ineasing device comprising a `side-wall having an inwardly bent periph eral extension of substantially Lshape in ysection, the free end of said extension being disposed substantially parallel to said side Wall, and a second side wall forming a continuation of said iree end and. adapted to make a substantially oil-tight joint there-` `with. 4. A lower half of a gear case comprising a side Wall provided, at its loi-fest prima with 'having a relatively large side 4wa an inwardly bent peripheral `efx'tension of substantially L-shape in section that has a substantially straight'upper edge and a seconcl side wall extending substantially parallel to said first wall and having a lower edge that is adapted to make a readil separable, substantially oiletight joint with the upper edge oi said extension.
5. The combination with a supporting l`ran'le a driving and a driven shaft mounted tllerein, and a meshing pinion and gear wheel disposed on said shafts, of a lower half of a gear case comprising an outer side wall providedt at its lowest point, with an inwardly bent peripheral extension of substantially L-shape in section that has an upper edge substantially parallel to the up per edge of said lower half, said side Wall being elsewhere.provided with an outwardly bent peripheral extension of substantially# L-slnlpe in section that is secured to said 'trame :ind an inner side Wall extendin snbsl'antiallv parallel to said outer wall an imi-'ing a lower n e provided with a shoul- 1 rih the upper edge of said j substantially oil-tight con joint, 'whereby leakage of lubricating material from the case substantially prevented and the outer portion of the said lower half of the case may be readily removed.
6. The combination with a meshing gear wheel and pinion disposed in the same plane, of an inc-asing devi ce. Comprising a plurality of separate parts secured together, one' of said parts being adapted. to inelose the pinion and a portion of the gear Wheel, said part having a relatively large sidewall openl ing approximately registering with the pinn ion.
7. The combination with a gear Wheel and a plurality of materially separated pinions meshing therewith, of an incasing member haring connilementary parts respectively adapted to ,inclose one of said pinions and a portion of the gear wheel, said parte each l opening approximately registering with the corresponding pinion7 and detachable cover members for said openings.
8. A gear--incasing device comprisin a side-wall having an inwardl bent perlpheral extension of substantie ly L-shape in section adapted to constitute an oil pan, and a straight wall section coperating with said oil pan to collectively constitute a member of substantially Ushape in section.
9.
