' Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Music-Sheet- Rewinding Governors, of which the following is a specification.
The art of the separate governing of the air service to a wind motor for the propelling of a music sheet in automatic musical instruments originated with Gally, Patent #351,172, October 19, 1886, theonly prior use of air reducing governors for musical instruments having been that for reed. or pipe organ tone production, first shown in Encyclo. Public Library), that particular type of governor with its pneumatic between the governor valve and the motor to be governed having been adopted for music sheet motor governors subsequent to the M. Gally patent, and is thepresent generally accepted type,but prior to the present invention" only one single governor has been employed for any one music sheet motor, such governor usually acting for the forward winding of such music sheet, while the greater power desired for the quicker return winding of such sheet has been secured by throwing open the governor valve or opening a bypass around the governor valve to allow the full direct service :of air from the bellows or like wind inducing apparatus to the motor. By such means it is possible for the operator by foot, or a power drive, as electric, to work the pumpers to such a'great amount of service as to cause the music sheet to berewound too rapidly and thus to be damaged, especially with very large rolls, where the increase of diameter of such roll at the finish of the reof damage to the sheet, and also preventing.

A music sheet 1 has a take-up spool 2 to wind said music sheet when playing music thereby, said spool 2 having a shaft 3 a which is fixed a gear 4driven by a pinion 5 during such winding and playing, as shown in Fig. 1, at which times said pinion 5 is held to its position with said gear 4 by means of a shift lever 6 engaging a collar 7 fast with pinion 5 and the driveshaft 8 which shaft 8 is revolved by a wind motor 9 of any well known type.
At such position of the gearing for winding and playing, as in Fig. 1, the air service of the motor 9 is supplied through a pipe 10 connecting the wind motor 9 to a tempo controlling box 11 which is provided witha tempo valve 12which is moved to more or less open the tempo slot or port 13. Between the wind motor 9 and its service pipe 10 is placed a wind governing and checking valve 29 which is adapted to be slid to a position away from interference with the air travel from motor 9 to pipe 10 as'in Fig. 1 when the motor 9 is to be operated for winding the music sheet 1 for playing, the tempo governor valve 11 and its related parts then acting to govern. the air tension for a steady tempo control, the rewind governor valve 29 having no effect on the air service to the motor 9 because the rewind governor pneumatic 30 is opposed by a spring 31 set to a resistance requiring greater air tension to operate it than is dctermined by the tempo governor, valve 1% and its governor pneumatic 19, whose moving board 18 is opposed by a spring 32 set to a resistance requiring less air tension to operate it than the air tension required to operate rewind governor pneumatic 30 as opposed by its spring 31.
The air service of the wind inducing apparatus through chest 16, may be of the usual varying tension common in auto-pneumatic players to secure varying power of expression, or may be of one steady degree of air tension, provided such air service is of sufficient tension at all times for winding the music sheet for playing, the tempo governor spring 32 being set to a proper decorrect governing of air supply to the wind motor at all such times, and that such air service shall be of a suflicient degree of tension as to provide adequate increased power required to operate the wind motor for the rewinding operation of the music sheet.
For rewinding the music sheet 1, one end of theroll 33 with which such sheet is usually provided, has engagement with a clutch 34-. on a revoluble spindle35 having a sprocket wheel 36 on said spindle 35. A chain 37 connects this upper sprocket wheel 36 with a lower sprocket wheel 38 loosely mounted on drive shaft 8. When rewinding of the sheet 1 is desired the shift lever 6 is moved to the right as in Fig. 2, engaging a clutch 39 on collar 7 with a clutch 40 on lower sprocket wheel 38 to enable the revolution of said sprocket wheel 38 by drive shaft 8 from operation of the wind motor 9, the collar 7 being revolubly engaged with the drive shaft 8 although slidably movable with said shaft 8 to enable the clutch 39 to be moved in and out of engagement with clutches 1-0 as just described, and when collar 7 and clutch 39 are at the position to the right for rewinding, the pinion 5 is clear from gear L thus permitting the free reverse revolution of take-up spool 2 as the sheet 1 is drawn off from it by the rewinding of said sheet 1 on to its roll 33 by means of the rewinding revolution of the spindle 35 and its clutch 34 which engages and revolves said roll Then the gearing is set for the rewinding operation of the music sheet 1 as in Fig. 2, the valve 41 has been moved to the right of and uncovered a port l2 which is connected by a duct or tube 43 to a pneumatic 4a which is connected to a valve st5 over a rewind port 46, and the opening of the port 42 has caused the pneumatic 4 1 to raise its valve as and open its port 4-6, thus allowing the direct service of air from the main air inducing chest 16 through the pipe 10 to the motor 9. In lieu of this pneumatic control of the port 46, mechanical connections may be employed from the shift lever 6 to the valve 45, in any well known manner. The port 46 when open as described acts as a bypass to the tempo governor valve 14 and its port 15, the tempo governor device being thereby rendered ineffective as to any controlling or reduction of the air service to the wind motor during the rewinding operation of the roll gearing and the music sheet 1 and its roll 33. lVith this rewinding position and operation of the gearing, ineffective condition of the tempo governor, and open condition of the direct air service through rewind port 16, the rewind governor pneumatic 30 is collapsed against its spring 31 by the higher tension from the said direct air service through said rewind port 46 and pipe 10, with said air reduced and governed by the rewind governor valve 39 which is then moved by a connection or rod as 4'? connecting the pneumatic 30 to the valve 29, the rewind governor valve 29 being thereby moved to a position partly interfering with the air service of pipe 10 to the motor 9, thus reducing the speed of the motor 9 to such rate as is desirable for quiet and safe rewinding and stopping of the music sheet 1 and its roll 33. The air connection 48 from the interior of the rewind governor pneumatic 30 to the air service of the motor 9, is to such air service at some part thereof which is at the motor side of said rewind governor valve 29.

The purpose of this relief or minimum service hole 49 is as follows: At the completion of the rewinding of a large roll of music sheet the diameter of'such roll is much greater than that of an ordinary medium or small sized roll, and by such greater diameter the leverage of the large radius of such roll against the power of the spindle 35 and its sprocket 36 and the powerof the motor 9 is much greaterthan with a smaller roll, orthe-first part of the.

If on the other hand, the spring 31 were set to a light resistance so that the valve 29 was closed entirely across the air service to the motor, and the hole 49 wasthe only and con; stant measure of the air supply for winding, then a hole 49 large enough to care for .a large roll at the completion of its rewinding would cause too high a speed of rewinding for a small roll, or if the hole 49 were made small enough to effect a correct speed of rewinding fora small roll, the completion of rewinding of'a large roll would be too slow, or such rewinding would hesitate, or even fail.
It thereby appears that the present rewind governor valve 49 acts in a compound capacity as both a governor and a check, and the claims hereofare to be understood in the light of both such actions of the governor pneumatic 30, and- Y V -What I claim as my invention is 1. Music sheet winding and. rewinding gearing; a wind motor anddriving connections from said motor to said gearing; wind inducing means and air connectionstherefrom to said wind motor; and two air tension governors interposed between said wind inducing means and said motor and both the said governors adapted 'to over-n the air to the saidmotor only, one 0 said governors adapted to act during the winding operation of said gearing, and the otherof said governors adapted to act during the rewinding operation ofsaid gearing.
2. Music sheet winding and rewinding gearing; shifting means adapted to reverse said gearing from winding to rewinding and from rewinding to winding, a wind motor and driving connections from said motor to said gearing; wind inducing means and air connections therefrom to said wind motor; and two air tension governors interposed between said wind inducing means and said motor and both the said governors adapted to govern the air to the said motor only, one of said governors adapted to act duringthe winding operation ofsaid gearing, and the other of said governors adapted to act during the rewinding operation of said gearing. 3. Music sheet winding and. rewinding gearing; a wind motor and driving connections from said motor'to said gearing; wind inducing means and air connections there from to said wind motor; and two air tension governors interposed between said wind inducing means and said motor and both the said governors adapted to govern the air to the said motor only, one of said governors adaptedto act during the winding operation of said .gearing,,and the other of said governors adapted to act during the rewinding operation of said gearing, the governor adapted to actduring the saidrewinding operation having a higher air tension control than the governor adapted to act during. the said winding operation.

Music sheet winding and rewinding gearing; shifting means adapted to reverse said gearing from winding to rewinding; wind inducing means; a wind motor and driving-connections from said motor to said gearing; and an air tension governor between said wind inducing means and said motor and both the said governors adapted to govern the air to the said motor only, said air tension governor adapted to act only when said gearing is inits rewinding posi tion.
13. Music sheet winding and rewinding gearing;'a wind motor and driving connections therefrom to said gearing; a wind inducing means and air connections therefrom to said motor; and two air tension governing means interposed in the said air connections between the said wind inducing means and the said motor, one of said governors between the other said governor and said motor, the said governor near to the said motor adapted to a higher air tension control than the other said governor.
14. Music sheet winding and rewinding means and the said motor, one of said governors between the other said governor and said motor, the said governor near to the said motor adapted to a higher air tension control than the other said governor, and means adapted to overcome the operation of the said governor that is nearer to the wind inducing means and allow the operation of the said governor that is nearer to the said motor.
15. Music sheet Winding and rewinding gearing; a wind motor and driving connections therefrom'to'said gearing; a wind inducing means and air connections therefrom to said motor; and two air tension governing means interposed in the said air connections between the said Wind inducing means andthe said motor, one of Said governors between the other said governor and said motor, the said governor near to the said motor adapted to a higher air tension control than the other said governor, and a bypass air connection from said wind inducing means to the said governor that is nearer to the said motor and through that governor to the said motor, and not through the governor that is nearer to the said wind induc ing apparatus.

Music sheet winding and rewinding gearing; a wind motor and driving connections from said motor to said gearing; wind inducing means and air connections therefrom to said wind motor; a means adapted to governthe airtension to said motor during said winding operation, and a means adapted to check the air service to said motor during said rewinding operation.
18. Music sheet winding and rewinding gearing; a wind motor and driving connections from said motor to said gearing; wind inducing means and air connections therefrom to said wind motor; and a governor means interposed in said wind connections and between said wind inducing means and said motor and adapted to operate only during said rewinding operation, said governor means including a valve in said wind connection having a hole through said valve from its side toward the said wind inducing means to its side toward the said motor.
19. Music sheet winding and rewinding gearing; a wind motor and driving connectionsfrom said motor to said gearing; wind inducing'means and air connections therefrom to said wind motor; anda-governor means interposed in said wind connections and between said wind inducing means and said motor and adapted to operate only during said rewinding operation, said governor means including a valve in said wind connection, and an air passage past said valve from the side of said valve toward the said wind inducing apparatus to the side of said valve toward the said motor.
20. Music sheet winding and rewinding gearing; a wind motor and driving connections from said motor to said gearing; wind inducing means and air connections therefrom to said wind motor; and air governing means between said wind inducing means and said motor and both the said governors adapted to govern the air to the said motor only, and means adapted to change the degree of said air governing from one condition during the said winding of the music sheet to another condition and degree during the rewinding of the music sheet.

Music sheet winding and rewinding gearing; a wind motor and driving connections from said motor to said gearing; wind inducing means and air connections therefrom to said wind motor; an air tension governing means interposed in said connection between said wind inducing means and said motor, and a tempo port and tempo valve between said governor and said motor, and a second air governing means interposed be tween said motor and a port to said wind inducing means separate from said tempo port and tempo valve.
22. Music sheet winding and rewinding gearing; a wind motor and driving connections from said motor to said gearing;
wind inducing means and air connections therefrom to said wind motor; means interposed in said connection adapted to govern the air service to said motor only to one degree of tension when said motor and gearing are winding the said sheet and to govern the air tension to said motor to another degree of air tension when said motor and winding the said sheet and to govern the air tension to said motor to a greater degree of air tension when said motor and gearing are rewinding the said sheet.
24. Music sheet winding and rewinding gearing; a motor and driving connections therefrom to said gearing, and two governors each alternatively acting relative to the other and adapted to govern the air to the i said motor only.
