ing vehicle is about to stop or turn into another lane of travel. f
The primary object of my invention is to provide a simple durable and inexpensive signal exhibitor that will provide a constantly illuminated tail light at night and wherein sign members are employed for Adisplaying suitable signs, one of which may be easily shifted into a display position and illuminated at night.
A further object of my invention is to provide a compact signal exhibitor wherein a spring actuated roller is employed for maintaining one sign normally displayed and another sign in position to be swung to the display opening of the exhibitor when the signal is actuated.
The mechanical construction by which l attain the above and other objects will be hereinafter specically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the signal exhibitor;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of sign members as supported by a roller.
The signal exhibitor comprises a casing having a bottom plate 1, side walls 2, a rear wall 3, an inverted V-shaped roof or top plate 4, and a hinged front wall 5. The hinged front wall 5 is connected to the front edge of the bottom plate 1, as at 6 so that it may be swung downwardly to permit of easy access being had to the interior of the exhibitor casing, and the upper edge of the front wall is adapted to be held by a suitable snap fastener 7 or similar holding means carried by the apex of the roof or top plate Specification of Letters Patent.

4. The upper partof the hinged front wall 5 has a bulls eye or lens 8 and the lower part thereof is provided with an oblong sight opening 9 closed by a transparent plate 10.
The inner side of the rear wall 3 has a suitable incandescent lamp 11 and the bulb of this lamp may be red in color or the bulls eye or lens 8 ot' a similar color, so that a danger signal will be displayed when the lamp is illuminated from a suitable source of electrical energy, as batteries (not shown). Sincegt'he interior of the exhibitor casing' may be illuminated, the bot-tom plate 1 thereof is provided with an oblong opening 12 sothat rays o'f light may be cast upon the front side of a license plate, card or tag, suitably connected to the rear wall 3 of the exhibitor casing.
The inner sides of the walls 2 are provided with suitable brackets 14 for the pintles 15 oi a spring actuated roller 16, said roller being somewhat similar to ordinary curtain shade rollers. Suitably connected to the periphery of the roller 16 are sign members 17 and 18 disposed at right angles to each other, with the sign member 18 of greater width than the sign member 17 and the latter provided with end stops 19 to engage the bottom plate 1, as best shown in Fig. 1, and thereby hold the sign member 18 in parallelism with the front wall 5 of the casing, thus permitting of the sign carried by the sign member being displayed at the sight opening 9 of the casing. As shown in Fig. 3, it is preferable to provide the sign member 18 with the words Safety First7 and the sign member 17 with the word Stop The Stop sign member will normally confront the bottom plate 1 of the exhibitor casing and to swing this sign member into an active position so that the sign may be observed at the sight opening 9, a cable 2O extends into the exhibitor casing and is attached to the roller 16, as at 21. An opening 22 in the rear wall 3 of the exhibitor casing provides clearance for the cable 20 and this cable may extend to a clutch pedal, brake lever, or steering wheel in or der that it may be conveniently pulled to partially rotate roller 16 against the action of the spring thereof, and display the stop7 s1 'n.
gThe inner side of the hinged front wall 5 of the exhibitor casing has a longitudinally disposed ledge or partition. 23 extending into proximity of the longitudinal edge of sign member 18, but this partition does not interfere with a partial rotation of the roller 1G. It cooperates with the sign member 18 A in confining light rays within the exhibitor casing, but when the sign member 17 is swung to an active position, then there is a space between said sign member and the partition that permits of light rays from the lamp l1 illuminating the stop sign of the signal.
I attach considerable importance to the simplicity of the signal exhibitor, as the casing thereof may be made of light and durable metal, non-corrodible, and finished to harmonize with the metallic fittings oitl an automobile or similar vehicle, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such changes in size, shape and manner of assemblage as fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
An exhibitor for signals comprising a oas ing' having a hinged front Wall provided with sight openings, a Vlongitudinal'ledge carried by the inner yside of said hinged front wall between the sight openings thereof, a 'roller journaled in said easing, sign members carried by said roller with one of said members Coperating with said ledge in providing an inelosure at one of said sight openings, illuminating means Within said casing, means in said roller adapted forv ro tating said rollerin one direction, stops earried by one of said sign members at each end thereof engaging the bottom of said casing and holding said vroller normally stationary, and means attached to said roller andrextending out of said easing adapted for par# tially rotating said rollen Y l'n testimony whereof I Vaf'ix'my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
