Description

COMPOSITION OF MATTER FOR THE REMOVAL OF ROAD IAR AND ROAD-OIL FROM FINISHED SURFACES.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD R. BULE, a citizen of the United States of America residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Composition of Matter for the Removal of Road-Tar and Road-Oil from Finished Surfaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to and has for an object the removal of substances, such as tar and oil, from finished surfaces without injury to the finish upon the surface being treated. A specific application of the invention is the removal of road tar and road oil from the exposed portions of automobiles, as, for instance, the fenders and body. It is well known that an automobile in traveling over an oiled or tarred road, particularly when the materials are soft or have been freshl applied, becomes coated with these materials the removal of which is quite difficult; in fact, in most instances, the process of removal injures the paint or finished parts of the vehicle. It has been necessary heretofore in many instances in order to entirely remove the road tar or road oil, to scrape or rub the varnish or paint from the vehicle and to then refinish, thus making an additional expense to the upkeep of the vehicle. My invention is directed to a compound which, while being neutral to the finish quickly acts upon the substances intended for removal, converting them into a liquid state, in which condition they may be readily removed by wiping off with a cloth or waste. It is also my aim to provide a compound which requires no experienced technical knowledge to apply and which will not injure metals, varnished or painted surfaces, no matter how carelessly it may be used.
If the substance'to be removed is tar or oil such as is employed for road surfaces, I have found that, by applying to the materials to be removed, the solvent properties which haveby the process of elimination been extracted from them, they are readily Specification of Letters Patent.

converted into a liquid state. It is desirable during the dissolving of these materials to prevent or retard the evaporation of the solvents which are quite volatile, and to this end a suitable retardant is added to the composition.
The compound is applied to the material which is to be removed in some suitable manner. I find that it may conveniently be sprayed upon the parts of'the vehicle or other surface which is to be treated and there permitted to remain for a short period, dependent to some extent upon the amount of material to be removed, as well as to its condition. Of course, itis to be understood that, if the tar and road oil with the accumulations of dust and sand have remained a long time upon the surface, they will require a longer time in solution and at times a greater quantity of the solvent material. After the material to be removed has become sufiiciently liquid, it is wiped off with waste or a soft cloth.
Upon the removal of the softened materials, together with the solvents, it will be.
found that the finish of the parts which have been treated is uninjured.
As an illustrative formula of my new compound, which is particularly adapted for; the removal of road tar and road oil from the painted surface of vehicles, the following has proven satisfactory Toluol 7.5 parts Xylol 39.5 Cumol 22.5 Neutral naphthalene oil 25.5 Kerosene 5.

0f course, it is to be understood that the 4. The composition of matter consisting of the following ingredients in substantially the proportions given, viz: 15
'Toluol 7.5 parts Xylol 39.5 Cumol "22.5 Neutral naphthalene oi1 25.5 Kerosene 5.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 29th day of November, 1916.
EDWARD R. BULE.
