rating steam and water of the general type shown in'- Letters-Patent issued to me in' May, 1915, so that the hot water may be returned to the boiler and the dry steam passed to the point of use. The object of -the invention is to provide a novel structure by the use of which the water will be returned quickly to'the boiler and the steam permitted to rise from the water and flow in a tortuous passage to the steam outlet so that it will be thoroughly dried and relieved of all moisture, drugs or sediment, thereby promoting safety iii-the boiler, reducing wear and increasing the efiiciency of machinery, and economizing in time and fuel. A secondary object of the invention is to so construct the device that the inlet and the steam outlet will be in alinement thereby pern'iitting the device to be very quickly and easily fitted to existing plants.

ln carrying; out my invention, I employ a cylindrical casing or shell 1 which is provided with a water outlet 2 in one wall. The cylindrical casing or shell is provided with annular flanges 23 at its ends and to the said flanges, l secure the heads a, said heads being of concave convex form and one head having its convexity disposed within the cylinder. The steam striking these hallles will be diverted and will circulate in a tortuous manner around the several hallles and will finally escape through the outlet collar 5, as will be readily uuderstruul. To hold the steam to the baflies 15 an arched deflector 1G is secured to and projects from the partition 10 over the upper ends of the bailles and in spaced relation to the shell 1, the space between thesaid arch and the shell serving to prevent loss of heat through radiation from the shell. On the inner side of the partition 10 below the bridge 5, I provide a transverse bafiie or deflector 17 which serves to turn downwardly the water which may tend to rise with the steam from the end of the inlet pipe 6.
It will be readilynoted that the inlet and the steam outlet in my present device are in axial alinement so that the apparatus may be readily interposed in and fitted to any plant now in use. By arranging the discharge end of the inlet pipe or elbow 6 approximately over the water outlet 2 the hot water is returned quickly to the boiler while the steam will rise from the water immediately upon the issuance of the mixed steam and water from the said elbow. The steam cannot pass directly to the steam outlet but must rise through the bridge 8 and then pass through the upper portion of the partition 10 so that these elements will be raised in temperature and will react so as to dry the steam. The partition 8 and the baffle cage need not be secured to the cleats upon which they rest, but may simply rest loosely thereon and will be held against rising by the cylindrical contour of the cas ing. They may, consequently, be'easily slid into or removed from the casing so that repairs or renewals may be very conveniently made.

In a steam separator, the combination of a casing having an inlet at one end and a steam outlet at the opposite end, a bridge disposed across the casing at the inlet end of the same and above the inlet, a bafiie cage supported within the casing and comprising a vertical partition abutting the inner end of the said bridge, and a bottom plate extending from the said partition to the outlet end of the casing in spaced relation to the lower side of the casing, the said bridge, partition and bottom plate being perforated, a plurality of bafiles within the bafiie cage, and a battle 011 the inner face of the partition below the bridge. 1

A steam separator comprising a casing having an inlet in one end, a steam outlet in its opposite end and a water outlet in its lower side, an inlet pipe secured in the inlet of the casing and having its inner end turned downwardly approximately over the water outlet, a bridge disposed across the inlet end of the casing and above the inlet, said bridge being perforated, a vertical partition disposed within the casing and abutting the bridge, the upper portion of said partition being perforated, a bottom plate extending from the said partition to the outlet end of the casing in spaced relation to the lower side of the casing and being perforated adjacent the outlet end thereof, a baflie on the inner face of the partition below the bridge, a plurality of vertically disposed baflies rising from the said bottom plate in staggered relation and having concave faces presented toward the vertical partition, and an arch extending over the upper ends of the bafiies in spaced relation to the casing.
