IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTERISES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,804, dated March 19, 1872.

Specification describing certain Improvements in Blacksmiths Butteris, invented by D. I. FOUST, residing at Orestline, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio.

The first part of my invention consists in connecting the knife-handle of the butteris to the clawwhich hooks over the hoof of the horse by a universal joint, enabling the smith to change the direction of the cut at pleasure without altering the position of the claw. The second part of my invention consists in connecting' the knife-handle. and claw in such a manner that they may be adjusted in relation to each other to adapt the tool for paring hoofs of varying sizes.

Figure 1 is a perspective of my improved butteris complete, the dotted lines indicating the sole of an animals hoof. Fig.2 illustrates a modified form of handle for the knife.

The same letters of reference are employed in both figures in the designation of similar parts.

The claw A is made of the curved form shown, corresponding as nearly as possible to the curvature of an animals hoof, and stands at an acute angle to its shank A. The inner side of the claw may be roughened or corrugated to cause its taking a sufficient hold upon the hoof to remain steady while the knife is plied. The knife B is secured, by preference detachably so as to facilitate its sharpening, by temporary removal, to the bar 0, which carries at one end a suitable handle, 0 and termi- Within this fork the eye-bolt D is pivoted upon the pin 01, which stands at right angles to the knifeblade B. The shank of the eye-bolt is screwthreaded, and adapted to a tap in the upturned lug a, on the shank of the claw A. This connection of the claw and knife-handle enables the smith, while operating the knife, to incline the cutting-edges of the blade more or less, so as to trim not only the fiat portion of the hoof, but also around the frog, without changing the position of the claw; and by using a screw-threaded bolt as the connecting link, the'distance of the knife-blade from the claw can readily be adjusted by simply turning the knife-handle, to adapt the 'tool for operating upon hoofs of different sizes.

It should be here remarked that the means for connecting the claw and knife-handle are capable of many modifications without departing from the principle of my invention, which covers any such means permitting the inclination of the knife-blade at the same time that it oscillates. "he bar C may be of the bent form shown in Fig. 2, disposing the knifeblade for hollowing out the hoof.

In operating this tool, the blacksmith will manipulate the knife-handle with his right hand, and attend to the claw with his left.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of the claw A and the knife-handle 0, connected together by a universal joint, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The'combination of the claw A, jointed handle 0, carrying the knifeblade, and adjustable connecting bolt or link D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
