To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LINUS J. SANDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Forks, in the county of Grand Forks, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Rewinding Devices for Stenotype- Note Holders; and I .do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an automatic rewinding device and stenotype note holder.
In the stenotype machines used at the present time, a strip of paper is used on which the notes are made and this strip of paper is rolled from one roll to another as the notes are made. As a consequence of this, the first notes are on the inside of the roll and the roll must therefore be unwound before the notes can be transcribed.
It is therefore an object of my invention to provide a device for rewinding the strip of paper so that the first notesmade will be the first presented for transcription.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a device wherein the strip of paper may be moved periodically a predetermined distance so that the notes will be successively visible to the operator.
It is a still further object of my invention to provide adevice of this character wherein the movement of the paper will be automatic but will be manually controlled.
With these and other objects in view, such as will appear as my description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

Springs 34 draw the roller 32 toward and in contact with the roller 30. A detent 35 is pivoted within the casing and on a bracket, at 36, and this detent is provided with a bill 37 which is adapted to engage in a notch 38 in the roller 30 and is held therein by a spring 39. A finger piece 40 extends from this detent through the forward face of the casing and by means of this finger piece the bill 37 may be disengaged from the notch 38.
In operation when it is desired to rewind the strip of paper after it is taken from the stenotype machine the spool is placed on the upper trunnions 15 and 29 and an empty spool is placed on the lower trunnions. The shipper lever 18 is operated to permit the engagement of the gears 7 and 11 and the engagement of the gear 8 with the gear 21. Then the bill 37 of the detent 35 is withdrawn from the notch 38 the spring at will operate to wind the strip of paper upon the lowermost spool 26, the paper being tightly wound thereon because of the presence of the resiliently engaged rollers 30 and 32.
Now when it is desired to transcribe the notes the shaft 4: is shifted to cause the engagement of the gears 6 and 10 and the gear 9 with thegear 21. When the bill 37 is disengaged from the notch 38 and the detent released the roller 30 will revolve one complete time and the upper spool will rotate so as to wind the paper from the lower spool. As soon as one revolution of the roller 30 is completed the roller will be stopped by the reengagement of the bill 37 and the notch38 and a predetermined portion of'the stenotype notes will be exhibited through the opening 3 for transcription. It is to be noted that the normal tendency of the spring 24; is to rotate one or the other of the spools but this rotation is prevented by the detent 35 and because of the fact that the paper is arranged in the particular manner illustrated and described, that is to say, it extends from one spool to the other and between the pair of rollers.
It will thus be seen that the strip of paper on which the stenotype notes are made may be first rewound and then wound in the opposite direction predetermined distances at intervals and at the will of the operator so that the notes may be transscribed by the operator.
While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, it

The trunnions 29 are carried by posts 29' which are hingedly connected, as at 30 to the rear wall of the casing, whereby the spools 25 and 26 can be readily removed or replaced by swinging said posts. The side of the casing adjacent the posts 29 is hingedly connected as at 31, whereby access can be had to the interior of the casing.
What I claim is 1. A winding device has merely for stenotype note holders, comprising in combination, a casing, a vertical shaft mounted in said casing shafts mounted at opposite ends of the vertical shaft, means for alternately gearing said stub shafts to the vertical shafts, removable trunnions mounted in the casing in alinement with the stub shafts, spools engaged between the stub shafts and the trunnions to rotate with the former, a web common to the spools, a controlling-roller oper ated by'said web and mounted parallel with said spools, said roller being positioned below the upper spool, adriving means for the vertical shaft, means to gear thedriving means to drive the vertical shaft in either direction, and means operative on the controlling roller to release the driving means for movement to predetermined distances.
2. A winding device-for stenotype note holders, comprising in combination, a casing, a verticalshaft mounted insaid casing for rotative movement, a pair of stub shafts mounted at opposite ends of the vertical shaft, means for alternately gearing said stub shafts to the vertical shafts, removabletrunnions mounted in the casing in alinement with the stub shafts, spools engaged between the stub shafts and the trunnions to rotate with the former, a web common to the spools, a controlling roller operated by said web and mounted parallel with said spools, said roller being positioned be low the upper spool, a driving means for thevertical shaft and-means operative on the controlling roller to release the driving means for movement to predetermined distances.
