To all whom it may concern: U Be it known that I, ERVIN M. Frrz, a c1t1- zen of the United States, residing at Worthington, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio have invented an Improved Automatic" witch, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved sw tch adapted to be thrown to reverse positions by the reverse movements of a reciprocatlng body, and intended more particularly for shifting the switch at the beginning of the reverse movements of a revoluble body, being designed for effecting an engagement to make the throw at the beginning of the revolution in each direction and for adjustment to avoid further engagement in the continuous revolution while the throw is effective.
A primary object of my invention is to maintain constant polarity of current at the brushes of generators having armatures driven in reverse directions, and a particular use is found in charging storage batteries for lighting trains by axle generators of cars or rolling stock commonly moved in reverse directions.
A characteristic embodiment of my improvements is found in the combination of a double polo double throw knife blade switch mechanism connected to' the field mechanism of a generator, with a ball movable in a cam way of an oscillatory carrier connected with the revolvin armature. v

In the form and application of my inven-' tion. illustrated in the drawings, a genera'tors field frame 1 has connected therewith a double pole double throw switch comprising the terminals 2 and 2 connectel with the field winding 3 by the respective conductors 3 and 3 the terminals 2 and 2 connected with the terminals 2 and 2 by the respec cam 5 the latter has been moved tive conductors 4 and 4, and the blades 5, 5, 5 and 5 fixed to a shaft 6 which is journaled in the bearing 7 and adapted for throwing the blades and making and breaking contact with the respective terminals 2,

The generators armature 8, revoluble about an axis parallel to that of the switch, has its respective brushes 9 connected by the conductor 9 with the integrally connected blades 5 and 5 and by the conductor 9 with the integrally connected blades 5 and 5, which are insulated from the blades 5 The switch actuator comprises a block or carrier 10 connected to the armaturermg 8 by the pivot 11 providing it with an axis of oscillation parallel to the axis of the armature, the ring being provided with bearings 8 between which the carrier oscillates and which support thesprings 12 acting against and 5 a its opposite sides to restore it to and holding it in normal position.
The carrier 10 is provided with the parallel peripheral grooves 10 and 10 in the planes of the respective cams 5 and 5" of the respective blades 5 and 5, the outer race or cam way sections 10 and 10 in the planes of the respective grooves, the inner race or cam way section 10 in a plane midway between the planes of the sections 10 and 10 and the inclined transverse race sections 10 and 10 connecting the opposite ends of the sections 10* and 10 with the respective ends of the section 10. A ball 13 is movable in the cam way formed by the sections 10* to 10 inclusive.
In operation, with the parts in the relation shown in Fig. 1 and the armature revolving clockwise, the ball 13 (held in the dead end of the race section 10 to the right of the central plane dividing the symmetrical cam way) engages the cam 5 of the blade 5 projecting into the groove 10 and rocks the integrally connected blades so that the contacts of the blades 5 and 5 with the terminals 2* and 2 tacts of the blades 5 and 5 with the terminals 2 and 2 are broken. The force of the impact of the cam or projection 5 and the ball 13 rocks the carrier 10, on its axis 11, anti-clockwise, and projects the ball beyond its normal are, so that when it passes the beyond the ball when revolving in its normal are. When the movement of the armature is reversed or the revolution is anti-clockwise, the ball 13 rolls from the section 10, through the sections 10 10, and 10, into the section 10*, and strikes the cam or projection 5 on the blade 5 extending into the way 10", with the result that the blades are thrown to eifect the re'ngagement of the blades 5 and 5 with the terminals 2 and 2. The impact rocks the carrier,'proj ects the ball outwardly andforces the registering cam 5"- beyond the normal path of the ball. Having passed the blade, the carrier is moved by the com pressed spring '12 to its normal position, in which the ball clears the cam 5- in the further anti-clockwise revolutions of the armature.
When the blades 5 and 5" make contact with the terminals 2" and 2", current flows in the closed circuit comprising the conductors 8, 9, 5 2 3, 3, 3 2, 4, 2 5 and 9. Whenthe blades 5 and 5 make contact with the terminals 2 and 2, current flows through the closed circuit comprising the conductors 8, 9 5, 2, 3 3, 3, 2, 4, 2, 5, and 9 In the different positlons of the switch, the direction of the current through the field winding 3 is reversed, with the results desired.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination with a switch, of an actuator, and a revoluble device on which said actuator is adapted to oscillate, said actuator comprising a carrier having a cam way and means movable to diflferent positions in said cam way in reverse movements of said device, whereby said switch is shifted to reverse positions.
2. The combination with a switch having oscillatory means comprising a blade, of an actuator, and a revoluble device to which said actuator is eccentrically pivoted, said actuator comprising a carrier provided with a cam way and a ball movable in said cam, way so as to rotate in different parallel planes to engage said means and reverse said'blade in the reverse movements of said device, whereby said actuator is rocked, said ball is projected beyond its normal position and said means moved beyond the normal path of said ball. 3. The combination with a switch having oscillatory contact making and breaking means, of an actuator therefor, means movable inreverse directions with which said actuator has an oscillatory connection, said actuator comprising a device movable relatively thereto for operating said means first named, and means for bringing the deflected actuator to normal position.
4. The combination with a switch having oscillatory contact making and breaking means, of an actuator for rocking said -means in reverse directions, a device movable in reverse directions to which saidactuator is connected in oscillatory relation, and means comprising a spring for bringin the actuator deflected by contact with said means to normal position in a path removed from said means.
5. The combinationwith a switch having a plurality of connected blades, of a rotary device having an actuator pivoted eccentrically thereon, said actuator comprising a 7 carrier provided with grooves registerlng with said blades, a cam way having terminal sections registering with said grooves, and a ball movable along said cam way into diflerent terminal sections to positionsfor reversely operating said blade on reversing said device.
6. The combination with a generator having a stationary field mechanism, and a rotary armature mechanism, of a double pole double throw switch fixed to said field mechanism and a switch actuator connected to said armature mechanism, said actuator comprising a ball carrier connected in movablerelation to said armature mechanism, and a ball movable to difierent positions relative to said carrier by thereversal of the direction of rotation of said armature mechanism, whereby the position of said switch is reversed with said reversal.
