IMPROVEMENT IN BRIDLE-BITS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,789, dated March 19, 1872.

will. enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents my improvement applied to the mouth of a horse. Fig. 2 is a detached top view of the bit, one side being drawn in section in the plane of the line :v sv of Fig. 1.

This invention relates to certain improve-` ments in bits for horses oi' the class in which pulley-blocks and sheaves are employed. The present invention consists in forming the pulley-block or case from a single piece oi' sheet metal and bending the same at or about its center around the cheek-bar, and clasping it there- 4on by a depression, so that the sides of the said pulley-block will forni the case for receiving the sheaves, around which the reins pass and connect with the head-stall.

Referring to the drawing, the letter A designates the bit-bar, and B the cheek-bars. O O are the pulley-blocks or cases, which are formed or struck up from a single piece of sheet metal, and are provided with a slot, H, and a recess, Gr, the former to receive a supplementary strap, I, connecting with the head-stall, and also to receive the ends of the check-rein J and the latter, the said recess G, to receive the ends of the bit-bar. These pulley-blocks or cases are made of malleable metal, so that they canbe bent at or about their centers around the cheek-bars B,'and be rigidly confined thereon by means of a depression, a, and move lateral] y with the cheek-bars in. respect to the bitbar. When the pulley-blocks are thus arranged upon the cheek-bars, rivets or screws may be employed in addition to the means of fastening by the depressions, so as to render them more rigid upon the said cheek-bars. The ends ot' the reins E, which go through the pulleyblocks ofthe bit, are composed of short straps K, one of which is seen in Fig. l, which are V buckled to the head-stall by the same buckles l which fasten the adjusting-ends of the supplementary straps I, and extend down through the pulley-blocks around their sheaves, and terminate in rings or loops L, by which the other parts of the reins are made fast.

A pull upon the reins causes the rein-straps I to run through the pulley-blocks, and the bit isconsequently lifted and drawn upward against the corners of the animals mouth.

When the reins are loosened the weight of the bit causes it to descend, the sheaves moving freely on the rein-straps unretarded by friction.

.What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

rLhepulley-blocksC, formed or struck up from a single piece of malleable metal, and provided with the recess G and slot H, and clasped direct-ly upon the cheek-bar B, as herein shown, and coniined thereon by a depression, the whole constructed and arranged for operation as set forth.
