Be it knownthat l, ALONZO E. RHoADEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hopedale, in the county of Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Builder-Motions, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specica-l cases affords sufficient filling upon the ear-` rier or bobbin to insure the continuity of the filling laid in the shed after call for filling replenishment.
A number of patents have been granted for diderent characters of apparatus to insure the formation of a bunch upon the bobbin,Y
and to define the form of the bunch in order that the filling may be withdrawn from the carrier or hobbin without danger of breaking. One form of means to this end is shown and described in Patent No. 913,164,
dated February 23, 1909, wherein certain means is disclosed for increasing the gain of the traverse during the preliminary wind ing, in order to impart a greater taper to the bunch, so that the yarn will not catch onto the inner end thereof during the weaving operation. Y Other patents have also been granted to me for mechanisms having for their general purposes, modifications in the forni and character of the bunch produced.
When replenishment is effected, in a loom of the feeler type, that yarn or thread which remains upon the abandoned filling carrier or bobbin becomes waste; consequently, the
less yarn 0r thread, that shall remain upon the abandoned filling carrier after the replenishing operation, consistent with a proper continuity of the thread laid in the shed, the less will be the resulting waste. Feeler looms have therefore been provided with feeler mechanisms which, when the filling had become exhausted to the predeten mined extent, would enter a slot or opening in the carrier or bobbin and initiate filling replenishment. v
In order that the feeler and slotted car rier or bobbin shall effectively coperate to effect filling replenishment, it is necessary that the slot in the carrier or bobbin shall be exposed to the entrance of the feeler, and that there shall yet remain upon the carrier or bobbin sufficient yarn or thread to insure the continuity of the filling laid in the shed.
The aims and purposes of the present invention are, therefore, to provide means whereby a filling carrier or bobbin may have wound thereon preliminary windings of filling beyond one end of the slot in the carrier or bobbin to insure continuity of the filling laid in the shed after the service windings have been unwoundto properly present the slot in the carrier or bobbin to the free entrance of the feeler. A good practical form of the invention is hereinafter del scribed in connection with the accompany ing drawings, but it will be understood, of course, that various details may be changed within the true scope of the invention as pointed out by the claims.

The frame 1 of the machine may be of any usual character common to ring spinning machines, for instance, and appropriate for supporting the operating parts. Suitably associated with the frame 1 is the ring-rail 2, shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and Carrying a.v series of spinning rings?) of usual character. Secured to the slide 23 by any appropriate form 01"' securing means, such as the bolts 61, is the operating pawl carrier 62 having pivoted to its upwardly-projecting end portion at 63,' the paivl 64, the end of which is adapted-to engage the ratchet teeth 45. The swinging movement of the pawl about its mounting 63 is limited by a knife-joint or stop `65 so that when the pawl 6a is moved to the right out of engagement with the ratchet cam member, it will not drop too loW or out of operative relation thereto.
It is a purpose of the present invention to lay the preliminary windings or bunch upon the bobbin by a sufficient number of traverses beyond one end of the slot 68 in the bobbin to insure continuity of the illing laid in the shed after the teeler in the loom has indicated substantial exhaustion of filling; and it is a further important feature of the invention that ivhen substantial eX- haustion of llinglhas been reached,I the slot 68 in the bobbin will be entirely uneoveredto insure entrance of the Jfreeler on a detectingbeat and consequent initiation ot lling replenishment. To these ends, the preliminar-y windings 66 are laid upon the bobbin or carrier With a short traverse, and short gain, and upon their completion the service traverse and service gain are at once resumechto 'thereby cover by the iirst service Winding, the feeler slot 68 in the carrier or hobbin. This service traverse and service gain then continue.
In order that the base portion of the .vound loobbin shall conform to the requirements of the builder motion', the shortening of the traverse and gain in laying the preliminary windings is coniined to that move-` ment of the traverse toward the tip of the bobbin, the consequence being that upon the completion of the preliminary windings the service windings may be at once resumed under full traverse and gain Without distorting the form and character of the Wound bobbin at the base thereoi.
Having determined the number ci layers to be laid by the preliminary windings to form the bunch, the stop 5l is appropriately adjusted to engage the end tooth of the ratchet 45 in such position that the requisitenumher et teeth will appear between the stop and the holding paivl 56. rlhe end 36 et the latch carrier 34C will rest upon Athe cam i6 and the end 39 of the latch 36 will be raised into the path ot the projection el() of the traverse modifier. At the commencement ot the Winding operation the slide 23 will be atthe left, and as the slide is let back by the builder motion on the lirst upward movement, the projection i0 of the traverse modifier will engage the end 39 ol' the latch 56 and further movement of the slide to the right, Fig. 2, will cause tho traverse modifier 27 to turn upon its pivotal mountino' 28, thereby shortening the traversc and gain in traverse proportionately during movement ot the slide to the right. This increment oit the slide to the right, Fig. 2, during the preliminary windings is not suiiicient to cause the roll 60 on the traverse modifier to engage theincline 59 oir' the retaining pa-vvl 56, so the latter remains in engaging portion vvith respect to the ratchet 45. As the slide moves to the right it carries the operating paivl 6&1., which on the rcturn movement of the slide to the left under the control of the usual builder arm, engages the ratchet '--5 and turns the ratchet cam it the distance of one or tivo teeth according to the adjustment of the pavvl. rlhe holding pavvl 56 engages the ratchet in the new position and holds the ratchet cam from movement responsive to the Weight, as the slide makes its subsequent movement to the right. This action of the parts will continue until the raised portieri of the cam 4- 6 passes beyond the ond 36 of the latch car- 1ier, Wiieh ivill occur when the predetermined numher et traverses have been made to term the bunch, whereupon the end 36 et the latch carrier will drop into the recess t7 of the cam and the end 39 of the latch will drop beloiv or out of the path oit moi/'ement of the projection Ll() of the traverse modifier With the result that on the next movement et the slide to the right, the projection 40 will. fail to engage the ond 39 et the latch and full service traverse and gain will be given the ring rail.
1When the carriers or bobbins have been partially illed or Wound, the movement ot the slide 23 to the right is sufficient te cause arm 3l,thereby moving the end 36 of the latch-carrying arm out of the depressed portion of the cam -fl6, and simultaneously orv about this time, the roll 60 on thev traverse modifier 2'? enOaO'es the inclined cam A)ieee` 59 on the tail portion 58 of the pawl 56, and disengagcs the retaining pawl from the ratchet, whereupon the weight 50 asserts itself and turns the ratchet cam la clockwise, Fig. 2, until the end tooth of the series Ll5 engages the end 52 of the adjustable stop, it being understood that the operating pawl 6l at this time has been moved by the slide to the right out oi engagement with the ratchet tooth. IVhen the lilling carriers or bobbins have been completed and upon winding back,7 the slide 23 is moved to the left, whereupon the operating pawl 6l engages the ratchet teeth and in the present instance of the invention moves the parts into the position indicated in F ig. 2, ready to commence or start the initial windings.
In the construction described, the adjustment or the stop 52 is such as to cause two traverses only of the preliminary windings, that is, one up and one down, before passing directly into the service windings.; but if it should be desired to increase the number of layers in the preliminary windings, it is necessary only to adjust the stop 5l so that an increased number of ratchet teeth 45 shall be positioned to the right of the operating pawl 6d when the latter moves the ratchet cani to starting position in winding back.
F rom the construction described, it will be apparent that means are herein provided between the ring-rail and builder motion to lay the yarn upon a carrier or bobbin with a. service length of traverse and a service gain in traverse as prescribed by the builder motion, and that such service length of traverse and service gain in traverse are modiiied proportionally during the formation of the preliminary windings, such proportional modiiication being confined to that movement of the traverse toward the tip end of the bobbin.
Modilications and changes may be made in some of .the details of the illustrated embodiment of the invention, but those described have been found to be of good practical form, and to contain novel characteristics in themselves.

builder motion for imparting movement to the ring-rail to lay the yarn upon a bobbin with a service length of traverse and gain in traverse, a slide, a lever pivoted between its end to the slide, means for connecting opposite Iendsof the lever with the 'builder motion, a latch carrier, a cam Vfor controllingA the latch carrier, a latch pivotally mounted on the latch carrier and havinga seat adaptl with the slide, alatch carrier having a latch a to engage the lever as the slide is reciprocated for causing the traverse movement and gain to be shortened in the same proportion during the formation of preliminary windings, a cam for holding the latch in position to engage the lever, and means for turning the cam to permit the Vlatch to assume an inoperative position when the preliminary windings are completed.

In a machine of the character described, the combination oijthe ring-rail, a builder' arm, a slide between the builder arm and ring-rail, a lever pivoted between its ends to the slide, connections between the builderarm and opposite ends of the lever, means acting repeatedly upon apredetermined point of said lever to cause the traverse and gain toward the tip of the bobbin only to be shortened that the preliminary windings may be laid upon the bobbin while maintaining the unaltered shape of" the winding adjacent theV base of the bobbins, and devices for controlling theA number of repeated actions of said means upon the predetermined point of the lever and for treeing the movement ot the slide when the pre liminary windings are completed that full service traverse and gain may be at once initiated. In a machine of the character described, the combination ot a ring-rail, a builder motion for imparting to the ringrail a service traverse and gain that the yarn may be laid upon the bobbin with a predetermined filling wind, means between the ring-rail and builder motion including a slide, a lever pivoted between its ends to said slide, and connections from the builder motion to opposite ends of the lever for causing t-he traverse and gain toward the tip of the bobbin only to be shortened that preliminary windings may be laid upon the bobbin while maintaining the unaltered relation of the windings nearer the base of the bobbin, and means for causing Service windings with full traverse and gain as pre- -scribed by the builder motion to be laid at once upon completion oi" the preliminary windings.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of a ring-rail and builder motion, a slide between said ringrail and builder motion, a quadrant connected directly to the slide to transmit movements of the slide to the ring-rail that the yarn may be laid upon the bobbin with a predetermined filling wind, a lever pivotally mounted between its ends on said slide, connections between the two ends of the le ver and builder motion, means for rocking said lever on its i'ulcrum as the slide is mpved during the preliminary windings that the yarn may be laid upon the bobbin with correspondingly, short traverse and short gain in one direction and then freeing,
said lever to bodily movement with the slide" that windings may be laid with full traverse and gain of the predetermined filling wind.
9. ln machine of the character described, the combination of a ring-rail and builder motion, a slide between said. ringrail and builder motion, a quadrant connected directly to the slide to transmit movements ot the slide to the ring-rail that the yarn may be laid upon the bobbin with a predetermined filling wind, a lever pivot ally mounted between its ends on said slide, connections between the two ends of the lever and builder motion, means for rocking` said lever on its ulcrum as the slide is moved during the preliminary windings that the yarn may be laid upon the bobbin with correspondingly short traverse and short gain in one direction and then freeing said lever to bodily movement with` the 'slide that windings may be laid with full `service traverse and gain o1" the predetermined filling wind, and means for varying the number ot layers of the preliminary windings.
10.1n a machine of the character de scribed, the combination of a ring-rail and builder motion, a slide between said ringrail and builder motion, a lever pivotally connected between its ends to said slide, connections between the ends of said lever and builder motion and between the slide and ring-rail, a latch, means for causing the latch to engage and tilt said lever as the slide moves in one direction to shorten the traverse and gain as the yarn is laid toward the tip ot the bobbin during preliminary windings, and thereafter to move said latch to an inoperative position that the yarn may be laid upon the bobbin with full length of service traverse and gain.
