To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER M. ALEX- and resser members for guiding and feeding the work to the knife. 1
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction and operation of ucertain portions of'a skiving machine of this character to render. the operation of the machine more certain and reliable and improve the quality of the work performed thereby.
With this end in view one feature of the invention contemplates the provision in a machine of this type having a tubular skiving knife and means for rotating the knife, of cooperating gage and presser members a engaging with the work upon opposite sides of the lmife, a member for grindmg a bevel face upon one surface to put the cutting edge at the opposite surface of the knife, and a second grindin member engaging 5 with the opposite surface of the knife to remove eccentricities from the surface.
Still further features of the invention consist in certain novel features of construction, combinations, and airangements'of.

The machine shown in the illustrated embodiment of the invention is of the general type shown and described in the patent to Alexander No. 1,117,541, granted November 17, 1914. This machine comprisesa tubular skiving knife 1 journaled in the machine frame 2 and having a knife blade 3 which is clamped in a substantially cylindrical knife holder 4 in the usual manner. The work is guided and fed into operative relation to the skiving knife bV a gage member 5 which is supported by an overhanging arm 6 and cooperates with a rotary feeding and pressing roll 7 supported within the knife. The
feed roll is journaled in a roll carrying head 8 and has provision for a bodily yielding movement toward and from the knife edge, and an angular tipping movement about one end. In addition, the roll carrying head may be oscillated about the supporting shaft 9 to vary the working. portion of the roll and is locked in any adjusted position by an arm 10 projecting radially from the shaft and engaging with a locking plate 11, as shown clearly in Fig. 1.
It is extremely important in machines of this type that the cutting edge of the knife shall conform accurately to the'true circle of rotation of the knife, thus enabling the machine to operate most efliciently upon all kinds of material and form an even, uniform bevel surface. To this end, in the present invention improved mechanism permanently embodied in the machine. is provided for grinding a bevel cutting face upon the outer surface of the knife to put the cutting edge at the opposite surface and for removing the eccentricities upon the inner surface of the knife without forming any substantial bevel upon this surface. In the illustrated embodiment of the invention a grinding disk is supported in operative relation to the outer surface of the knife to form a bevel cutting face thereon and a second grinding member is permanently located in operative relation to the inner surface of the knife and is arranged to engage with the surface in a Sllb..' stantially straight line path of contact extending in the direction of the axis of the knife. With this construction the gage memberand feed roll arepositioned at the top portion of the knife and the grinding members are permanently positioned at opposite sides of the knife during the operation of the machine, thus enabling the grinding operation to be performed whenever desired without modifying or'changing the machine in any manner. The bevel cutting face is formed upon the outer surface by a grinding disk 12 j ournaled upon a head 13. at one side of the knife and rotated and moved into and out of operative relation with the knife as fully described in the application above re- ,ferred to. In addition to this outer grinding member a grinding disk 14 is supported n operative relation to the inner surface of the knife at the opposite side to true up the inner:
surface of the knife, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The grinding disk 14 is supported with its axis substantially parallel to the axis of the knife when in operative relation with the knife, and the periphery. of the grinding disk engages with the inner surface of the knife in a substantially straight line path of contact extending in the direction of the axis. In order to improve the grinding action and insure that the contact between the grinding disk and the knife shall be in a straight line path, mechanism is provided for moving the disk in a rectilinear path extending inthe direction of the knife axis. To this end the. grindmg disk 14 is mounted upon the end of a shaft 15 slidingly supported in a bracket 16 which is fulcrumed upon a stationary head 17 at 18 and is normally retained in an inoperative position by a spring 19 interposed between the machine frame and the bracket 16, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. The bracket 16 is oscillated to move the grinding disk into engagement with the knife blade by an adjusting stem 20 pivotally connected to the bracket at one end and having a knurled operating nut 21 threadedly mountedupon the opposite end and engaging with the machine frame to draw the grinding disk into contact 'with the knife blade in the usual manner. It will be obvious to those skilled in the art thatizhe provision of the adjusting nut 21 forms a gage for positively determining the position of the grinding disk with relation to the knife, and serves to limit themovement of the grinding disk in a direction away from the surface of the knife. For
convenience of operation, and to prevent the formation of a shoulder upon the inner sur face of the knife,the axis of the grinding disk may be'positioned'at a very slight in clination to the axis of the knife, as shown veniently rotated by connections from the end of the knife shaft through a shaft 27 supported concentrically with the knife shaft and connected thereto through a pair of cooperating clutch faces indicated at 26.

In the presentin-' vention, the outer grinding disk performs the greater portion of the work and to this 4 end a truing wheel is supported in operative relation to this disk and is provided with mechanism under' the control of. the operator for traversing it back and forth across the periphery of the disk to even the surface and remove any inequalities which I may be present. In the illustrated embodiment of the invention atruing wheel 37 is permanently supported to rotate about an axis parallel to the axis of the grinding wheel and is moved axially to traverse it back and forth across the periphery of the wheel. The truiiigwvheel is journaled upon the upper end of a spindle 38-slidin'gly supported in a head 39 which is adjustably secured to the bracket 13 of the grinding disk.

The adjusting rod 42 is connected to the head 39 by a pair of lugs 45 projecting from the head and embracing a collar46 secured to the rod, thus causing a lengthwise movement of the rod to impart a like movement to the head. The adjusting rod is conveniently manipulated by a knurled member 47 supported upon the outer end. After the truing wheel has been moved into engagement with the periphery of the grinding disk it is traversed back and forth across the disk by an operating arm 48 projecting into a position conveniently accessible to theoperator and loosely sleeved upon the adjusting rod 42, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. The arm 48 is connected to the spindle of the truing wheel through a second arm 50 projecting from the sleeve 51, having a bifurcated outer end which embraces a pin 53 mounted in the lower end of the spindle, as shown clearly in Fig. 1.
lVhile it is preferred to employ the spe cific construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, it will be understood that this construction and arrangement is not essential except so far as specified in the claims, and may be changed or modified without departing from the broader features of the invention.
The invention having been described, what is claimed is 1. A skiving machine, having in combination, a tubular skiving knife, means for rotating the knife, cotiperating gage and presser members to guide the work to the knife, a grinding member for forming a bevel cutting face upon the outer surface of the knife to put the cutting edge at the opposite surface, and a second grinding member constructed and arranged to engage with and remove ecoentricities in the inner surface of the knife and form a true cutting edge without forming any substantial bevel thereon.
2. A skiving machine, having in combination, a tubular skiving knife, means for rotating the knife, cooperating gage and presser members for guiding the Work to the knife, a grinding member arranged to form a bevel cutting face upon the outer surface of the knife to put the cutting edge at the opposite surface of the knife, and a second grinding member positioned in operative relation to the inner surface of the knife and engaging with the surface in a substantially straightline path of contact extending in the direction of the axis of the knife to remove eccentricities in the surface.
3. Askiving machine, having in combination, a tubular skiving knife, a knife shaft, cooperating gage and presser nembers for .guiding the work to the knife, a grinding disk engaging with the inside of the knife, a shaft for driving the grinding disk supported concentrically with the knife shaft, means for moving the grinding disk drive shaft into and out of operative relation to the knife shaft, and connections between the,

A skiving machine comprising a tubular skiving knife, means for rotating the knife, an oscillatory bracket, a ,grinding disk journaled in the bracket adjacent to the surface of the knife, means for actuating the bracket to move the periphery of the grinding disk into contact with the surface of the knife, and means for moving the grinding disk axially.
5. A skiving machine comprising a tubular skiving knife, a knife shaft, a grinding disk, a shaft supporting the grinding disk in operative relation to the surface of the knife, a drive shaft, means for moving the drive shaft into and out of operative relation to the knife shaft, connections between the drive shaft and grinding disk, and means for moving the grinding disk axially.
6. A skiving machine comprising a tubular skiving knife, coeperating gage and ace of the knife in a substantially straight line path of contact extending in the direcion of the axis, and mechanism for moving the second grinding disk in a rectilinear path extending in the direction of the axis of the knife.
7. A sk'iving machine, having in combination, a cylindrical skiving knife, .a gage member and a presser member cooperating to feed the work to the knife, a grinding disk operatively engaging with the knife, a truing member positioned in operative relation to the grinding disk, and mechanism for movin the truing member into engagement with t e grinding disk and for traversing the truin member across the periphery of the grinding disk.
8. A skiving machine comprising a rotary 'skivi-ng knife, a grinding disk positioned in operative relation to the knife, a head, a truing wheel journaled in the head in operative relation to the grinding disk, means for adjusting the head to move the truing wheel toward and from the grinding disk, and
means for mevin the truing wheel axially to traverse it bac and forth across the pe- -riphery of the grinding disk.

A skiving machine comprising, rotary skiving knife, a grlndin disk supported in operatrve relation to the inife, a head, atruing wheel journaled upon the head, mecha-' nism for, adjusting the head, an operating I arm, and connections between the arm and truing wheel to impart an axial movement 10 to the truing wheel upon moving the arm.
