Description

rn'rnnmoom, or waxes-Buns, rnnnsrtvanm.
ARTIFICIAL ABM.
Specification of Letters Patent. P t fit 2'1 1917;
Application filed August 22, 1917. Serial No. 187,664.
To. all whom it may concern Be it known that" I, Pn'rnn Nroom, a cit'rv zen of the United States, residing at Wilkes- 'Barre,-in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Artificial Arm, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to artificial limbs, one of 'its objects bein "to provide reticulated members combine with coiled springs,
said springs servingthe double function ofgiying form to the fingers andholding the members of the device in their extended or 'n irmal positions, there being finger actuating elements housed 'within the springs.
A further object is to provide finger actuating means of novel construction.
With the foregoing and other objects in view,- which will appear as the description proceeds the invention resides in the combination and arrangementpf the parts and in the details of construction heremafter described and claimed.
-In the accompanying drawings" the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings:-
Figured is aside elevation of an artificial arm embodying the present improvements.
'Fig. 2 ,is a horizontal section through the hand portion.
v Fig. 3 is a vertical section.
Fi 4; is asebtion on'l'ne 4-4 Fig. 1. Re erring to the. figures by characters of reference 1 designates a ,band adapted to be secured about the stump of the forearm,
' this band being provided with side strips 2 secured thereto in any desired manner.
' Pivotally connected to' the upper ends of the side strips are additional side strips 3 riveted or otherwise fastened to a band 4 adapted to be secured about the arm above" the elbow. The strips Bare curved at one end and extend beyond their 'ivota-l connections 5 and extcnding. from t e free endsof the strips 8 are studs 6 adapted to Work within longitudinal slots 7 formed within actuating strips 8.
The side strips 2 extend beyond the band 1 and are attached to a-meta ring9 forming the wrist portion 'of the device, there being top and bottomlskeleton plates 10 and 11 projecting from this wrist portion and attached to a transverse'end strip 12. Journaled within and extending transversely of the wrist portion 9 is a shaft 13 to whichi's of a' wire wrapped about the said i .i 28 and 30 and threaded through t e coiled: 9.0
secured a ratchet 14 having an into 9.1
15. A pawl 16 is pivotally mounts within the upper part of the wrist ortion .9 and one end of' this pawl normal engages the. ratchet 14 whlle the other on pro]ects out'- wardly from the wrist portione'nd'constitutes a finger piece as indicated at 17. A
cross pin 1 the forward ends of the stri s 8 are pivdt ally mounted on this pin. 19 are also pivotaily mounted on the pin 18 and are connected to a cross 'strip'20 movf ably mounted between the skeleton plates:
- [10 12 arethefin ermemk a 10 than. I Secured to the stri' bers of the device, t ese members ein dicated generally M21, 22, 23' and 24.
is connected to the arm and 4. ivergm'g' rods.
finger member-consists of a plate 25 secured to and extending outwardly from thestrip' 12 and adapted to swing relati vethereto; there being a. hinge 26 for connecting this: plate 25 tothestrip 12. Another hinge 27.:1 connects plate '25 to another plate 28 constin tuting the intermediate member oi the finger portion 'anda' third hinge 29 connects-plate 28 to a plate 30 constitutin the end member of the finger portion.
tapered coiled j' spring 31 is secured at its large end o the" stri 12 and extends throughout the length.
of t emembers 25, 28 and 30 and is fastened to them in any manner desired, 'asbvmeans ats spring 31. A flxible connection 32, which can be formed of catgut is attached to the outer end of the spring 31 and extends loosely through the spring, and through an opening in the strip 12, as shown at 8 is attached to the cross strip 20. Thus it will be seen that when the strip 20 is drawn;
toward the wrist portion 9 itwill pull on all 11} l of the connections 32 and cause the finger;
portions to' flex townrdthe wrist thus to grasp and hold an articlep seed in the hand skeleton plates 10 and 11 and the wrist portion 9 can likewise be covered,
The thumb portion'of the device is made up of a plate 35 extended outwardlyfrbln the wrist portion and-suitably braced' as. at
36, and hingcdly connected to thisplateah 37- is another. plate .38 constitutin theen'd portion oi the thumb; 1 A flexible. element 39 ortion,
ortion of the vice. It is to be a j understoo of course that the finger portions an he provided with suitable coverinfisfl 1H of fabric or the like as shown 012,34 and t e
