Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. ,2l/
Application led August 13, 1914. Serial No. 856,704.
To .Z whom it may concern.'
lio it known that l, rlrlmms Famine, Jr.. a citizen oi the United States. residing at New York city, borough of Manhatten, county ot New York, State ot' New York. have invented certain new and usetul lm. provements in Dtmr-(luards, the following being a full, clear, and exact disclosure ot the one forlnof my invention which l at present deem preferable.
VFor a detailed deseril'ition o'f the present it'orm ot my hivention, reference may be had to the following specification and to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates my invention.
My invention relates to a safety device for preventing injury to a person in a doorway by a motor-operated door. lt has been proposed to place on such a door a yielding guard or fender which Will act to Stop the progress ot the door When it comes in contact with a person or other obstruction in the doorway. It is, however, desirable that the door should not only be stopped, but also opened or drawn back in such a contingency` and I make provision for that by mounting a yielding guard on the j amb or frame of the door in an exposed position, so that in the contingency mentioned, the guard will be pressed inward and thereby caused to operate the reverser of the door-motor which will then draw back or open the door. l also provide that the said guard. which is necessarily exposed to contact with a person in the doorway, will be disabled, so long as the door is shut, so that it cannot be used at that time asl a means for unauthorized opening of the door.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a door, B a pneumatic motor therefor and C an electromagnetic controlling valve therefor. T hese are of a well known type which does not call for description. it being noted that the magnet c1, in circuit 5 ot the controller, is the one which acts to cause the door-opening movement and (f2, in circuit 6, the one which acts to cause the door-closing movement, the magnets are normally controlled by the push-buttons (L and at the point of operation by the traimnan. G represents the guard 'which is a vertical strip flexibly mounted on the door-frame or jamb at one sideoithe line ot travel of the door so as to becxposed to Contact with a person in the doorway who might be caught be device, a switch controlling said brauch ci" twecn the iamb and the door when the lutter is being closed by the motor. rthe guard (l when it yields acts to close one ,or both contacts l and L which serve to close a controllingv circuit .7" leading` to the door-opening magnet c1. ln this circuit 5 and in series with contacts l and l. l place a spring switch 4 that makes contact with point to maintain the continuit)T of the said circuit at all timesl except when the door is closed. As the door ailiproaches its closed position., a i'nojection lil thereon engages switch and draws it away Vtrom point to hreahV circuit 5 at that point and maintain it broken until. the door again opens. lilv this means if prevent the unauthorized use ,ot the yield-- ing` and exposed guard (t as a circuit-Mostar for the door-mening magnet c. so long as the door is closed. `When the doorl is still open. however. a person orobject in the doorway who may be pressed against the guard (lr by the torce of the motor wiil cause the guard to yield thereby closing circuit 5 and reversing the motor to draw the door hach ltoward its open position.
iVheu the circuit is closed by the button (L the current travels ,trom the battery through wire 5 to the :magnet 0L and Jfrom tlience to ground, said magnet operating the valve to introduce tluid pressure in the motor d in such manner as to open the door. iii/'hen circuit is closed through button o the eur rent passes Ytroni the battery through wire to the magnet c2 and 'trom thence to ground the action being to close the door. .hss ing the switch t to be in engagement nth the contacts 3, when the circuit closed L l or 2 by the movement of the guard, the
current passes from the battery, to the con-- tacts l and 2, from thence to the conta 't 3, switch blade et, wire and `wire 5 to the magnet c1 and thence to ground. rever-slaaf the motor to open the door. and shun the current trom magnet c2.
Vhat l claim as new and desire to secure by' Letters Patent is:
l. The combination with door. and a motor for operating the same, of un electromagnetic device tor controlling said motor. a` guard movably attached to said door, a` circuit tor said electromagnetic device.
shunting a portion oit said electroanaggn cuit, and means attached to said door moving said switch when the door reaches a to normally close the circuit, and` -av Vtrip predetermined position. member attached to the door and positioned 2. The combination with a door, and a to engage saidswitch blade to Open theicir- 'l motor for operating :the same, of an electro cuit as the door approaches closedpnition. 1: magnemc device for: controlling said motor, In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my a guard movably attached to said door, a cuhand, before two subscribing Wltnesses, this cuit for said electromagnetic device, a 12th day of Aug., 1914. i branch circuit controlled by said guard and THOMAS FARMER; Jul 7 shunting a portion of said electro-magnetic Witnesses? device, a switch in said branch circuit pm: FRANK DANNHAUSER,
