Description

H. W. BALLARD.
Wagon Spring. No. 12,475 Patented Mar. 6, 1855.

i To all whom, it may concern.
Be itknown that I, HARMON W. BALLARD, of Burlington, in Chittenden county and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxthisspecification, and in which y a t Figure l, is afiview of the rear or tail yendof a wagon body with axletree and s rin Fi 2 is a side view of a wa on body, with thefhind axletree, theirocker or bolster, reach, and bothsprings.
Thesame letters of {reference occurring 1 in both figures indicatexcorresponding parts.
The nature of my inventionconsists in a peculiar arrangementiofthe springs, so that they may be aflixed" to any common box Wagon Without I altering it in nyway, nd t ng c0st,in orderto make it an easy riding wagon ,whilegfro-m the position of the springs, theyiadmitlof thebody coming down to itsbearings on the rocker or bolster, and axletree, when under heavy burden without injuring the springs, thus doubling its utility. a
i To enable others tojconstrnct wagons with my improvement, Iwill proceed to de- In the accompanyinggdrawing, rep

(round, or arch sideupward,) to the underside of the ibody, immediately in front, or
in rear of the bolster or both, with a Wagons; and I do hereby declare the fol-' lowing to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionthereof, referencebeing had to the accompanyingdrawing, which forms part of ARRANGEMENT OFV'IIJHE sPRINGs 0N wAeoNs.

piece of timber (F) extending from side of the body, between it and the spring or the side orsides of the bolster near its ends, in such manner asto admit of their extension, when the spring [is borne down or straightened by a heavy load, as represented by the red lines in Fig. 1. A spring or either or both sides of the hind axletree, thus when "the load is too heavy forthe either side of the bolster and hind axletree,
single spring before described may be used inverted, by securing it at the center to the side of the bolster or axletree, withits rings bearing against the underside of the o y. g Having thus described my invention I wish to be understood, that I do not claim a spring wagon having solid bearings, to take the weight of the load when it becomes too heavy for the springs to bear, as this Iloias been accomplished before in other ways, ut a a What I doclaim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the springs, as hereor other vehicle, as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto tober 1854.
