GROOVING-KNIFE FOR CUTTER-HEADS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ELMER S. SHIMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milton, in the county of liorthumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grooving Knives for Cutter Heads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in cutter-heads, and it has to do more particularly with improved grooving-knives, and the manner of inserting and securing them in place, the cutter-head being peripherally and longitudinally counterbored, and the grooving knives having round shanks which are inserted in the peripheral bores where they are held by a stud-bolt which is inserted in the longitudinal bore, and which has recessed sides which receive the shanks of the grooving-knives, and which stud-bolt when secured rigidly in place holds the grooving knives securely. The advantage of the round shanks of the grooving-knives is that they may be turned up or down to ad just the knives with relation to their sides for cutting wider or narrower grooves.

T he numeral 1 represents the cutter-head. This is provided with the peripheral bores 2 and 3, of which there may be three sets more or less, three being shown, these being in pairs preferably non-parallel, and one slightly above the other.
The numeral 4 represents the groovingknife, the shanks of which are preferably round to fit the peripheral bores and enable them to be turned axially therein.
At a point between the bores 2 and 3, a third bore 5 is formed longitudinally of the cutter-heads and at right-angles to the bores 2 and 3, partially intersecting the latter,

and a stud-bolt 6 is fitted to this bore 5, and provided with approximately semi-circular recesses 7 and 8 on its opposite sides, each of which are to receive a shank of a grooving-knife 4. The curvature of the recesses 7 and 8 is a little greater than that of the shank, whereby to afford ample clearance. W hen the grooving-knives are inserted, and the nut 9 is screwed tight on the threads 10 of the stud-bolt, it draws the stud-bolt endwise and secures the grooving-knives on either side rigidly in place.
The advantage of the non-parallel arrangement is to admit of maintaining a certam angle of cut, which is made necessary by reason of the character of the work these grooving-knives are adapted to accomplish. The angle of the out is figured from the center of the head, as indicated by the dotted lines on Fig. 1.
By making the shanks of the groovingknives round, it is possible to adjust the knives axially to the required position.
The half-round openings or recesses 7 and 8 in the sides of the stud-bolt 7 allow for the loosening of the shanks when the nut 9 is unscrewed or released. lVhen the nut is drawn up tight, a clamping effect is produced by the contact of the sides of the semicircular openings on the shanks of the grooving-knives, and they being on opposite sides of the studbolt, both will be firmly clamped simultaneously.

A cutter head counterbored longitudinally and peripherally, the peripheral bores in pairs, one of which extends inwardly at a plane substantially at right angles to the axis of revolution and the other extending inwardly at an angle thereto, and the longitudinal bore located between and intersecting the two peripheral bores, grooving knives inserted in the peripheral bores, a locking stud fitted to the longitudinal bore and having its sides recessed to receive the shanks of the two grooving knives in the bores on either side thereof, and means for drawing the locking stud endwise.
