To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DON W. Crnrcorn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kelliher, in the county of Beltrami and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail- Braces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a novel type of rail brace that will elfectively prevent spreading of the rails and can be conveniently and expeditiously associated with the rails or removed therefrom.
Another object of the invention is to provide a rail brace that will be of simple construction, cheap to manufacture, and will be durable and eflicient in operation.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a detail side view ofone of the rails, showing one of the bracing members applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken through the rail and through the bracing member, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the bracing members.
Referring to the drawings more in detail, the letter A designates a pair of adjacent rail ties, which support the rails, only one of the rails being shown and designated B.
The rail brace includes a pair of clamping or bracing members, which are identical in construction, and, therefore, a description of one will suilice for both, and the one selected to be described is designated as an entirety by the numeral 1. The rail brace comprises an elongated plate 2, which is interposed between the adjacent ties and has one end extended beneath the base of the rail 13 and engaging the same, and is pro vided adjacent the inner terminal with a flange 3, which engages the inner longitudinal edge of the rail base, said inner end of the plate 2 being provided with an opening 4 for the reception of the bent terminal 5 on the adjacent end of a connecting rod 6,

the said bent terminal 5 being prevented from becoming accidentally detached from the opening 1 by means of the fastening pin 7, which extends transversely through an opening formed in the terminal 5 and fitted against a washer 8, which surrounds the bent terminal 5 and engages the under side of the inner end of the plate 2.
The outer end of the plate 2 extends a distance beyond the adjacent outer longitudinal edge of the base flange of the rail B and has its upper surface provided with a raised rectangular shaped portion 9, the opposite ends of which extend, as shown at 10 and 11, beyond the opposite longitudinal edges of the base plate 2 and are adapted to rest on the upper surfaces of adjacent ties, as shown in Fig. 1, and the inner longitudinal edge of the raised portion 9 is adapted to abut against the adjacent longitudinal edge of the base flange of the rail. The extensions 10 and 11 have openings 12 therein, for the reception of fastening spikes 13 which enter the ties and hold the plates in position on the ties. The raised portion 9, of the plate 2, is provided with an elongated centrally disposed diagonal extension 14%, the inner end of which extends beyond the inner edge of the raised portion 9, as shown at 15, and the upper side of the extension 14: is inclined downwardly in the direction of the raised portion 9, as shown at 16. The inner end 15 of the extension 14 has its lower surface beveled, as at 18, and its up per surface beveled, as at 19, in a direction reverse to the beveled portion 18. When the plate is in operative position, as shown in Fig. 2, the terminal of the inner end of the extension 15 abuts against the adjacent side of the web of the rail, and the beveled portion 18 engages over the upper side of the base flange of the rail and the beveled portion 19 engages under the adjacent side of the ball of the rail.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, is:
A rail brace comprising an elongated plate adaptedto extend beneath a rail and to lie between adjacent rail ties and to have the opposite longitudinal edges thereof engage the ties, a second plate formed integrally with the upper side of the first plate near one end thereof, the second plate being arranged transversely to and projecting beyond the side edges of the first plate and adapted to overlie the adjacent rail ties, a flange formed integrally With the upper side of the first plate in spaced relation to the other side edge of the second plate and t0 the adjacent end of the first plate, and a clamping member formed integrally with the second plate, the said clamping member being of less Width than the plate and 1-0 cated centrally between the ends of the secend plate and the side edges of the first plate and projecting beyond the inner side edge of the second plate and the first plate being provided With an opening beyond "the Copies 01 this patent may be obtained forfiye cents each, py addressing the Commissioner of Elfin,
