LIGHTING-FIXTURE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .HARRY NORTHWOOD, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of- Wheeling, county. of Ohio, and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lighting-Fixtures, of which thefollowing is a specification. i
This invention relates broadly to lighting fixtures, and more specifically to an electric lighting unit of that type which embodies a suspended light-shieldingbowl,
The' primary object of the invent on isto provide an electric light fixture of the semiindirect type. wherein the light-diffusing bowl is shieldedin such mannerthat the col lection of dust therein is largely prevented.
A further object is to provide, in a device of the character mentioned, a mouthclosing shield for thelight-difi'using bowl which is of such form and character that it not only does not detract from the appearance of the fixture, but also does not appreciably impair the lighting efficiency of such devices. l v
A still further object of the invention is to provide alighting device which includes a light-diffusing bowl and a dust shield adapted to be supported by or suspended from a socket cover mounted upon an ordinary suspended' electric-light socket, and which involves a simple constructionadapted to be readily installed by unskilled persons, and as readily removed when occasion requires. 4
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the features 'of construction, arrangement of parts and combinations of elements which will hereinafter be fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which illustrates a central vertical section of the invention.
In said drawing, 1 indicates a light-inclosing diffusing bowl, and 2 a shade or re flector, said parts being of a common or any appropriate form. Said parts are supported by a socket-cover which is preferably of the character disclosed in Patent No. 1,225,049, issued to me on the 8th day of May, 1917, but it will be understood that I do not confine myself to the use of the socket cover of aid patent. Said preferred form of socket-cover illustrated in the drawings consists of a cylindrical shell or casing 3 and a telescoping dome-member l, said ployed for supporting the bowl.
connection it will be noted that the shield .is supported, bythebowl rather-than by the socket-cover. I
Specificationof Letters Patent. Patefl-fiedl NO 2Q, 1911;? Application filed June-25, 1917. Serial No. 176,655.
casing having an inturned flange 5 at its upper end for resting upon a shoulder 6 formed on saiddomeanember, and having a lower flared end or skirt 7 whereby is formed an annular shoulder 8. Said socket cover is designed for seating upon a lightsocket in embracing relation to a socket susof-translucent glass. A ring-like apron 10 of metal loosely encircles the casing and has its lower edge resting upon the top of saidreflector for concealing the neck portion of the latter, thereby to enhance the appearance of the fixture.
Interposed between the reflector 2 and the bowl 1 is a plain transparent glass shield 11 of widely flared belLlike form, the
lower edge of which is designed to rest upon and embrace the openupper end, or mouth, of said bowl for excluding dust from the latter. Said shield has its upper portion or neck loosely embracing the skirt 7 i of the casing Sso that it is vertically movable with respect to thelatter to compensate for slight variations in the length of the chains 9 em- In this The dome-member 4 ispreferably of the split form disclosed in my said Patent No. 1,225,0-19, havlng a radialinclsion in. one 1 side thereof for facilitating introduction of the socket-suspension element.
In mounting the fixture, the apron 10, reflector 2 and shield 11 are separately and in the order named slipped upward over the light socket to an out-ofthe-way position on the suspension cord above said socket. Then the casing 3 to which the bowl 1 has previously been attached by means of the chains 9 is in like manner slipped upward over the socket to a position on the cord a suitable distance above said socket. The dome-member at is then applied in encircling relation to the cord at a point between the socket and the parts previously applied, as aforesaid, after which said dome-member is thrust upward or telescoped within the average person.
casing to a position wherein its sho ulder G seats against theflange 5 ofsaid casing. The casing, dome-member and suspended bowl are then lowered to permit said domemember to seat upon the light-socket, and
the lamp is then introduced in the latter. And, finally, the shield, reflector and apron are successively loweredto their respective.
seating positions.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that the fixture involves a minimum number of compactly arranged parts of relatively simple and inexpensive construction which may be readily lnstalled in assembled rela- 'tion and dismounted without the exercise of other skill than jthatpossessed by the While I prefer to employ a reflector as a Qpartbf the fixture, it will be obvious that the reflector might be omitted if desired What is claimed is -1. In a li'ghtingfixture, the combination with a socket cover, of a diffusingbowl, means suspending said bowlctrom said cover, and a glass shield fitted in vertically adjustableembracing relation to said cover above the upper end ofsaid suspending means and inclosing the latter, said shield being supported by said bowl and closing the mouth of the same. i
2. In a lighting fixture the combination with a shouldered socket cover, of a reflector supported by the shoulder of said cover, a diflusing bowl, chains suspending said bowl from said cover, and a'glass shield interposed between said reflector'and said bowl, said shield embracing said cover belowsaid shoulder and having its'lower edge disposed in closing relation to the mouth of said 3. In a lighting fixture, the combination with a socket cover, of a d'iflusing'bowl, chains suspending sa1dbowl fromsaid cover,
and a glass'shield embracing said cover and resting upon said bowl in closing relation to the mouth of the latter, said shield be- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for 'ture in presence of two nesses.
ing vertically adjustable to compensate for slightly varying lengths of bowl-supporting chains.
l. Adighting fixture comprising a socket cover having a flared lower endwhereby 1s formed an annular external 7 shoulder, a
light-dilfuSing bowl suspended from said flareden-d, a reflector having a neck portion embracing said cover andseated upon said shoulder, said reflector be ng supported in overhang ng relatlon to said bowl, and a glassshield interposed between said reflector-and said bowl,.saidshieldbemg disposed 1n embraclng relation tosai'd flared end of the cover and-having its'loweredge posi- -tioned in mouth-closing relation to said shoulder, sa'id reflector being supported in overhanging relationjto said bowl, and a glass shleldinterposed between said reflector and sa d bowl, Sitld shield embracing and being vertically movab le with" respectto said cover and resting upon said bowl'in mouthclosing relation to'thelatte-r.
