Be it known that I, ANDREW J. WALTER- Minn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Batesville, in the county of Independence and Sta-te of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin hail-Joints, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
rlhis invention relates to certain improvements in rail joints and has relation more particularly to a device of the general character of a scarf type and it is an object of the invention to provide a rail joint of a novel and improved construction whereby the possibility of pounding by the rolling stock passing the'reover is substantially entirely eliminated.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved rail joint wherein certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a view in top plan illustrating a rail joint constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation illustrating my improved joint as herein embodied, the clamping nuts co-acting with certain of the bolts being omitted;
Fig. 8 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 8-3 of Fig 2; and
Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of one of the meeting ends of rails as embodied in my rail joint as herein set forth.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings the meeting ends R of the rails are duplicate in construction and each of said meeting rails includes a longitudinally disposed eXtension 1 of substantially one half the full width of the rail proper and which affords an inner fiat face 2. The inner end of the flat face 2 is continued into the recess 3 formed in the head of the rail and of a depth equal to the depth of the head. The inner end or wall 4 of the recess 3 is disposed upon a predetermined inward incline while the lower wall 5 thereof is flat and horizontally disposed. The wall 5 defines substantially the under margin of the tread of the rail and the outer end of the wall 5 is continued by the downwardly directed wall 6 atkright angles thereto and positioned a predetermined distance inwardly of the outer end of the adjacent base flange 7. The inner marginal portion of the flange 7 in advance of the wall 6 is cut out to afford a recess 8, the lower face or wall thereof being at right angles to the wall 6.
The outer end portion of the extension l is formed with the tongues 9 and 10, the tongue 9 being snugly received within the recess of the adjacent meeting end of a rail while the forward edge or wall of the tongue 10 abuts the wall (i of the adjacent lrail and has its lower portion snugly seated within the recess 8.
The extensions 1 are provided with registering openings 11 through which are disposed the headed bolts 12. (3o-acting with the free extremities of the shanks of the bolts 12 are the nuts 14 adapted to contact with the outer face of the adjacent eXtension 1. The outer face of each of the nuts 14 is provided with the radially disposed slots 15 to receive the inner marginal portion of a key 16 disposed through the shank of the co-acting bolt 12, whereby the nut 14 is effectively locked in applied position.
It is also preferred that the outer edge of the liange 7 and of the bottom of the recess 8 of each of the rails be arranged on a predetermined inward incline and that the outer ends of the extensions 1 be correspondingl inclined as is particularly illustrated at 17 in Fig. 1.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a rail joint constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without materially departing from the appearance and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
In a rail joint, two rail members each having an extension at the end thereof of substantially one half the full width of the rail,
the inner face of said extensionextending into the head of the rail to afford a recess,
the inner wall of said recess being inwardly4` inclined and the bottom wall thereof substantially horizontal a downwardly directed wall positioned inwardly of the outer end ofy the adjacent base flange of the rail and terininating` below the inner margin of said iiangcto afford a recess with the outer'end ofthe recessopen, the bottom wall of said recess being substantially horizontal, the
