with m hinge 32 and held closed in any suitable manner and there should be gaskets disposed between the two sections so as to make the joint steam-tight. A drain pipe 33 extends downward from the lowermost portion of the casing 16 and discharges into the pipe 10, this drain pipe being preferably formed in two sections connected by a union 34. Preferably also a ball bearing 35 is provided for supporting the ends of the shaft 21, so as to permit the shaft 21 to rotate easily and prevent the pressure against the gage rod acting to impede its free movement.
Assuming that the device is'intended to indicate a maximum depth of 8 of water over the crown sheet, then the gear wheel 22 should be 8 in circumference and the rack-teeth 27 should extend over a length of 8". If the maximum depth of water to be measured is greater or less than 8 it is obvious that the proportions of the rack teeth and gear wheel will be accordingly changed. The extension 30 oi? the tubular member must be suiiiciently long of course as to permit the rack to move upward to its full stroke.

The operation of this invention may be obvious from what has gone before. it' the water lowers inthe boiler, the float 20 will move downward correspondingly, which will lower the doat rod 18 and rotate the pointer 25 in. a Counter-clockwise direction. Ii', on the other hand, the `water in the boiler rises, the iioat will rise and rotate the hand in a clockwise direction. The dial is graduated so that the distance of the iioat from the crown sheet oi the boiler may be read in inches and fractions thereof. lThe tube l0 is adjustable through the supporting box 13 so that the tube 1G may be pushed up or down and so adjust the device that the Hoat will strike the lower sheet of the boiler when the pointer 25 points to zero. The ioat 2() is of such weight that it will not jump up and down when the water in the boiier is boiling, but will remain relatively steady.
My device does away with the necessity of using gage glasses and shows positively and plainly the level of water withsin the boiler and the exact depth of water over the crown sheet. The device is very simple, can be cheaply made, can be used with or without the pressure gage and it is obvious that inasmuch as the device may be made of metal, there will be no chance of breakage trom internal pressure as there is with gage glasses. nor will there be any chance as there is in gage glasses,of the device be,- coniing so dirty as not to be easily read. lt' will be understood, oi course, that the casu ing 1b and the tube 10 will be full of steam. The ago is to be disposed directly over the Lacasse crown sheet at the rear end of the boiler and is adapted to be used on any standard boiler or on traction engines or locorfi'tive boilers.
While l have illustrated a form of my inventionV which I have found to be thoroughly effective in practice, yet it is obvious that I do not wish to be limited to the details of construction illustrated, as these may be varied in many ways, without departing from the spirit of the invention. This is particularly true of the gearing whereby the pointer is rotated.'
`Having described my invention, what I cla-im is l.l The combination with a steam boiler having upper and lower sheets, of a guide tube extending through the upper sheet and vertically adjustablejtherein, the lower end of said tube being formed with a stop7 a float rod extending upward through the guide tube and having afloat at its lower end, a rotatably mounted pointer, means operatively connecting the pointer to the float rod, and a. stop mounted upon the iioat rod within the guide tube and engageable with the stop on the lower end of the guide tube to thereby limit the downward movement of the float and rod 1 2. A water gage for boilers comprising. a tubular member adapted to be inserted through the upper sheet of a boiler and vertically ehiftable therein, and having ball bearings at. its lower end, a Heat rod extending entirely through 'the Vtubular member and carrying -a iioat at its lower end,-the upper end ot the rod being provided with teeth. a casing into which the upper end of the tubular member opens, a shait passing through the casing, a pointer on the Shaft, gratin-ations on the face of the easing over which the pointer moves, and a gear Wheel on the shaft operatively engaged with the teeth on the float rod. i
