UMIBRELLA.
Application .filed January 27, 1917. Serial No. 144,805. f
To @ZZ 'zo/wm it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIGMUND SCHLE- srNenR, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York city, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York Vand State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide simple and efhcient means for retaining an umbrella closed and a tip cup thereof in cooperation with the tips of the ribs, so arranged that when the retaining means are operated to release the runner the tip cup will be automatically released from the tips to permit the umbrella to be opened or to automatically open when it is provided with springs for opening it.
My invention comprises novel details of improvement and combinations of parts that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein,
Figure 1 is a side view of an umbrella embodying my invention, shown in the closed position with the tips of the ribs retained in the tip cup;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view illustrating parts of the umbrella in an opened position;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view illustrating parts of the umbrella in the closed position and the tips of the ribs retained by the tip cup;
Fig. 4 is a similar view illustrating the parts they assume when the tip cup is released from the tips with the runner retained in the position shown in Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail section illustrating the runner and tip cup keeper fully operated.
. The numeral 1 indicates a tubular umbrella rod of any ordinary type, to which the ribs 2 are pivoted at 3, the braces 4 being pivoted to the ribs at 5 and at 6 to a runner 7 in any suitable manner. The runner 7 is shown provided with a fitting 8 to which the braces 4 are pivoted at 6 and to which springs 9 are connected at 10, the springs being also connectedwith the ribs for causing automatic opening of the umbrella in a wellknown manner. Fitting 8 is adapted to engage a stop 11' on rod 1 to limit the opening of the umbrella, At 12 is a tip cup or tip retainer shown in hollow or open-end-1 ed form to receive the tips of' the ribs 2 and having a tubular portion. at 13, which', in the example illustrated, are slidablyy mounted upon the runner 7 between the fitting 8 and a stop or shoulder 14 at the outer end ofthe ruimer. A coiled spring at 15 surrounds the runner and is adaptedtolbe'ar'against the tip cup to move it toward the umbrella handle, said spring bearing'also against the fitting 8. I have shown the tip cup or retainer 12 provided withwa tubular extension 16 (on the side opposite the tubular portion 13) that surrounds the spring '15, and at 17 is a sleeve entering tubular. extension 16 and surrounding spring 15, said sleeve 17 being shown provided with an inner fiange or shoulder 18 slidable on runner 7 and serving as a stop for the end of spring 15, which pushes the sleeve 17 against fitting 8. The extension 16 and sleeve 17 telescope and the latter serves to guide the former while-they both inclose and hide the spring. The tendency of spring 15 under expansion is. to moveI the tip cup or retainer away. from the rib tips to the position shown in Fig.,4 to release the tips, the tubular portionr13 .of the tip cup then abutting against the stop 14 on the runner to limit the outwardxmovement of the tip cup. Means are provided to retain the runner in the closed position as well as to reta-in the tip cup or retainer with the rib tips therein (Figs. 1 and 3),; and whereby the tip cup may be released to move away from the rib tips and the run.- ner may also be released to open the umbrella. For such purpose I have shown Va keeper 19,. shown iny theY form of a projection or finger carried by a resilient or spring-acting member 20, that is shown pivoted at .21 within tubular rod 1` the latter being shown provided with a slot 22 for the' passage of projection 19. Member 20 is also providedwith a finger piece 23 operative in slot 22 and normallypro-V slot 24 inthe runner to retain the umbrella closed, at which time tubular portion 13 ot the tip cup will be over keeper 19, as illustrated in Fig. 4. The tip cup then will be in such position as to enable the rib tips to be folded together to receive the tip cup, which then ma .be manually pushed along the runner against the tension of spring 15 to receive the tips, as inFig. 3, whereupon the keeper 19 will be caused, by the resilient member 20, to pass farther outwardly through slot 2st in position to oppose the outer .end'of tubular portion 13 of the tip cup to retain the latter around the tips ot Vthe ribs. The umbrella will then be retained closed,1since keeper 19 retains at'the same timethe runner and the .tip cup as shown in Fig-3. lililhen it isdesired to open ,the umbrella it is' merely necessary to push the inger piece 23 inwardly and as keeper 19 passes from'the position vopposing the .end of tubularportions'l, the spring 15 wi'llpush the' tip cup outwardly toward the handleto release the rib tips, and the con- .tinued movement of keeper 19 will cause it to pass out of slot 24- and runner 7 to release the-'latter (Fig. 5), whereupon'tl e springs 9v .will cause automatic opening of the umbrella. lf springs are not used for the latter purpose, the user may` push the runner toV an .open position in an ordinary manner., and the runner may be retained by the usual stop 'on the umbrella rod.V Y
`Ihaveshown the edge of' keeper 19 beveled or inclined at 19iL (Fig. 3) to'permit the outer end of theV tubular portion 13 'of the tip cup to slideover said keeper when the umbrella isl being closed by pushing 4upon the' linger piece 23, whereby the keeper will assume the position shown in Fig. and .willV retain runner 7l in the* closed position. The* keeper 19 is'also vshown provided with anotched portion at19b'to ooact with the edge of tubular'portion 18 of thetip cup to .serve in retaining the latter in the tipholding :position vshown in Fig. 3 against the tension of springv 15, so that such 'spring will"snottend to slide' the tubular portion 13,;overkeeper 19, when the parts are in such position, whereby the tip cup willbe retained on'the'tips vto prevent spontaneous opening of the umbrella, requiring manual operation of the keeper to permit opening of the umbrella.
yHaving now described my invention what I claim is 1. 1n an umbrella, the combination of a rod and ribs pivotally connected therewith,
Vwith a runner connected with the ribs, a tip cup slidable'relatively to the rod, and provided with a tubular portion slidable on the runner to move therewith, said ruimer having a slot over which the tubular portion oi'the tip cup may pass, and a keeper carried by the rod adapted to pass through said slotte` retain the `runner in aclosed position andto ppose the tubular portion of the tip cup to retain the latter in coaction with the rib tips.
2.1n an umbrella, the combination oitV a rod and ribs pivotally connected therewith, with a runner connected with the ribs, a; tip cup slidable relatively to the rod, and provided with a tubular portion slidable on the runner to move therewith, said runner having a slet over which .the tubular portion et' the tip cup may pass, and a keeper carried by the rod adapted to pass through nd slot to retain the runner in a closed positi n and to oppose the tubular portion of lthe tip cup to retain the latter in coaction 'with the rib tips, said keeper having a notched portion for engagement with. the tubular projection of the tip cup whereby said portion will be opposed by 'the' keeper to prevent the tip cup from releasing the i'ibtips.
3. ln an Iumbrella, the combination oi' a rod and ribs pivotally connected therewith, with a runner connected with the ribs, a tip cup slidable upon the runner, spring surroundingvthe runner, and ceactive with a stop thereon and with the tip cup to more the latter from the rib tips, and a keeper adapted to passi thro' gli a slot in the runner to retain the latter in closed positiena fl to coact with theV tip cup to retain the latter in coaction with the rib tips.
