To all zc/wm it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER MIKLEA, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing I at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot and Shoe Sole Construction, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in boot, and shoe sole construction.

The primary object of thc invention is a provision of a sole'constructiou for boots and shoes whereby the wearing ply or surface thereof is removable by the wearer so that a j ilnrality of surfaceor wearing membcrsniay be provided, the same to be replaced upon the shoe according to wearing conditions.

A further object ofathe device is the provision of a shoe sole having removable heel and toe wearing sections adapted to' be locked thereon in position for use and readily releasable by a single operation allowing the 2'5 said sections to be thereafter forcibly removed from the shoe. 's

A still further' object is the provision of a combination'sole for shoes whereby the shoe may beprovided with ditl'erent forms 80 of lheel and toc wearing surfaces, readily interchangeable and renewable by the wearer without the aid of a shoe expert or a cobbler. With these general objects inb view and others that will appear as the nature of the 85 invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts iereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed ont in the appended claims.

.Referring more in detail to the drawing, the present device being designed for employment with any form of boot or shoe, the same is herein illustratedin connection with a shoe 10 having a main sole 11, an instep The heel 13 is provided with a locking mechanism consisting of a plate 14 suitably counter-sunk therein and secured thereto by hold-fast devices 15, either screws or nails, andV having a substantially Usshaped flange 1G, mounted thereon, with the open end of the .flange terminating at a block 17 lying" Hush with and of a curvature conforming to the inner face 18 of the heel 13. Locking pawls 19 are pivoted within the flange 16 to the plate 14 as at 20, having their onter ends 21 projecting through the said flange beneath the marginal edge 22 thereof. 'A latch bar is slidab'ly arranged centrally through the flange 16 and block 17. having a lug 24 operatively engaging the inner ends 25 of the pawls 19. A spring 26 encircles the bar 23 between the lug 24 and the adjacent end of the flange 16, Wherenormally resiliently positioned in their locking or projected arrangement, it being noted that the forwardv end of the bar 23 projects throught-lie block 17 adjacent the instep 12 sutiiciently to allow the same to be forced rearwardly for retracting the said ends 21. A--relmovable heel section 27 is adapted for locking engagement upon the heelv 13 and consists of-a plurality of lifts or thicknesses of leather 28, the ,inner thickness of which is provided with an arched frame 29 complementallyl formed ,with respect to the flange 16, the said frame being mounted upon a plate 30, secured between the inner of the section 27 by 110 means of hold-fast members 31. llt will be' noted that the forward end of the plate and the frame 29 lie flush with the rear face of a cutaway portion 32 of' the inner lift 28,

the section 27 being adapted for flat engage-` ment lwith the heel 13 by sliding the frame 29 over the-flange 16 with the cutaway portion 32' receiving and overlying the block 17, and in which operative position the locking ends 21 of the pawls 19 will seat within opposite keeper notches 33 in the frame 29.

A mount 40 of substantially the sameform as the retainer 34 is secured to a removable sole section 41 by means of hold-fast devices arranged through perforations 42, such as stitches 53, in a receiving channel 43. A

brace 54 is provided upon the retainer 34 and a similar brace is carried by the mount 40, adapted to lie side by side when tioned within the cutaway portion 38 of the retainer flange 37. lt will be understood that the marginal plate portion 44 of the l mount 40 and the plate portion 39 of the retainer 34 are so arranged upon the sple 11 and section 41 as to permitl the insertion of the coperating flanges, heretofore named,

A locking bolt 46 is cai'ried by the lug 24 projecting forwardly through a slot 47 in the plate 14 and adapted toA be lprojected through a slot 4S in the adjacent end of the retainer 34, for locking positioning within a keeper recess 4S) in the, adjacent edge of the` plate portion 44 of the mount 40. A guide 50 is carried beneath a leather filling strip, mounted upon the instep of the sole` 11, through which guide andv strip the bolt 46 shiftably extends, it being understood that upon retreating the bar 23 the bolt46 is withdrawn from the recess 19 simultaneously with disengagement of the locking ends 21 of the pawls.

A serviceable arrangement is provided whereby the shoevlO, has the heel section 27 naar/,ias

and sole section 41 firmly maintained thereon when desired for use, but readily released by the wearer upon pressing the bar 23 so that such sections may then be removed at will. The present arrangement is believed to be the preferable embodiment of the iiivention, although it will be understood that minor changes will be made therein without departing from the scope of the invention as claimed.

What I claim aus new is i 1. A shoe-sole construction comprising in combination with the main sole and heel of a shoe, removable sole and heel sections independent ot each other arranged thereon and interengaging therewith, and a unitary locking structure carried by the main heel the section is mounted upon the main sole,

and tensioned locking means 'for said section being `movable longitudinally of the shoe and carried by said heel adapted for engagement with the said mount.

A device of the classu described comprising a shoe, flanged retaining. members carried by the heel and sole portions thereof, supplemental heel and sole sections, inter-engaging members for said an ged members carried by said sections, and tensioned locking means for the said sections being movable longitudinally of the shoe.

4. In combination with a shoe having a heel, a plate carried by thesaid heel, a flange upon the said plate, ca spring pressed latch bar arrangedl within the. said flange, locking pawls operatively attached to said bar and having locking ends projecting through the said flange, an auxiliary lieel section, and an arched frame carried b`r said section adapted for overlying the said ange j when the section is Yoperatively arranged upon the heel, and having keeper notches therein adapted for the reception of thesaid j pawl ends.

5. ln combination with a `shoe having va main sole, a retainer marginally securedto the lower face ot' said sole, provided with an i inwardly*projecting` ange, having an inter-` rupted portion adjacentthe instep ofthe shoe, a .supplemental sole section substantially conforiningin shapeto the soleI of the shoe, and a mount marginally carried by said section, having a marginal plate portion conforming to the said flange adapted for reception thereunder when the section is operatively arranged, the said mount having an inturned flange adjacent its instep portion adapted for fitting Within the intel ruption of the retainer flange inreceiving engagement with the plate portion of the said retainer.

6.' A shoe sole construction comprising in combination with a shoe having a vamp, a retainer marginally secured vamp, a sole section, and a channeled mount carried by the said section adapted for interengagement with the said retainer when the sole is operatively arranged upon the shoe.
