IMPROVEMENT IN BABY-*WALKINGAPPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,706, dated March 19, 1872.
SPECIFICATION. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES D. Wnsr- LAKE and JOHN A. WESTLAKE, of Laurel, in the county of Prince Georges and State of Maryland, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in an apparatus for giving muscular action to infants and learning babies to walk and exercise without danger from talling, &c.; and the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the interior of a room, showing the child in the embrace of the hinged sweep or swing, the vertical revolving standard with its rodbraces, the detachable frame for holding the top of the standard to which it is pivoted, and the base or step for thebottorh journal. Fig. 2 shows a plan or top view of the swingbar standard, base-block, braces, top-supporting frame, and the mode of attaching the apparatus to the sides of a room.
The object and nature of our invention are to relieve mothers and nurses of a portion of the task and'burden of tending baby as they advance toward the period of sitting, creeping, and walking; and also give muscular action to their lower limbs, enabling them to take eX- ercise in a natural and proper position without danger of accident to their persons in any manner, and afford them healthful amusement.
Our invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several movable parts, and the method of attaching the same to the sides or corner of a room in such a manner as to be safe for practical use and admit of being speedily detached and put away or packed into a small compass for transportation, without the slightest injury to the house or room in which it may be used.
To enable others to make and use our improvement, we will describe it more in detail, referring to the drawing and the letters marked thereon.
A Ashow a portion of thetwo sides of a room at a right angle, leaving the corner clear of any obstructions. At a suitable height form the floor in the side walls or casings (should they be conveniently located) are inserted two or more eye and screw staples, a a, into which books I) b on the frame-bars B B are hitched, the bars B B extending out from the walls A A horizontally a suitable distance, and are coupled together by having a hole through the outer end of each, into which the top journal 0 of the vertical standard 0 is fitted to rotate. The vertical standard is provided with a hinged bar, D, secured to it at a suitable distance from the lower end, on which the ring-frame or circular opening E, in which the baby is placed, is attached, the opening E being provided with web or other elastic adj ustable straps cl (1 to form a seat for the child, so that its weight may be taken off its feet and legs, if desired. The bar D, when let down for use, is in a horizontal position, and is provided with two rodbraces, e and f, connecting it with the revolving standard O, which give the whole structure stiffness, and make it capable of sustaining any required weight. The bottom journal "i of the standard 0 has its bearing in a step or block, F, which is temporarily secured on the fioor or carpet G in such a position that the revolving standard 0 will be in a plumb or upright position.
What we claim is- 1. The vertical revolving standard 0 as constructed with a hinged bar, D, swingframe or opening E to embrace the child, and rod-braces e and f, substantially in the manner as and for the purposes specified.
2. In combination with the above, we claim the frame-bars B B for supporting the top of the vertical standard 0, and the method of securing the same to the sides of a room, A A, or casings with hooks b b and screw-rings a a, and at the bottom with the block F, in the manner herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof we, jointly and sev orally, subscribe our names.
' CHARLES D. WESTLAKE. JNO. A. WESTLAKE.
In the presence of O. BASTON, EDM. F. BRowN.
