A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
FIREARM.
Toall whom it may concern: Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. NELSON,
. a citizen of the United States, residing at a which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to magazine firearms of the class in which the breech-bolt is movable for opening and closing the has for its object to provide means for removably securing in place the cartridge box or equivalent which shall be simple and durable in construction and adapted reliably to hold such box or equivalent in place and to permit the introduction or removal thereof with facility. A further object is to provide a novel means to adapt the arm for the feeding of the cartridges one by one by hand. i In the accompanying drawing,
- Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a magazine firearm having the part thereof with which my invention is immediately concerned in section, a cartridge box being shown in the magazine cavity or opening;
Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the adapter in said opening: and,
Figs. 3 and 4 are a side and a rear elevation of the adapter.
a is the barrel having a rearward extension 11 forming the breech-casmg, which contains the longitudinally movable breechbolt. the rearward part 0 of which is capable of rotation in the breech-casing to lock and unlock the breech-bolt (cl being the usual handle for rotatably shifting it) and the forward part c" of which is held against turning by a depending rib c' which engages in a suitable groove in the breechcasing. The breech-casing has a lateral cartridge-shell delivery opening 6.
f is the stock to which the barrel is secured by the long screw 9 which, with screws h, also secures to the stock the trigger guard 2'.
j, k and 1 represent the trigger, striker and firing pin, respectively, of the firing mechanism.
The shell-delivery opening 6 is immediately back of the barrel-breech and in the same transverse section of the gun the breech-casing b has an underneath opening an and the stock and trigger guard an open- Specification of Letters Patent. i Patented Nov, 20, 1917; Application filed .Tune 19, 1917. Serial No. 175,562. i
ing n. These openings on and n form a cavity to receive the cartridge box 0, adapt ed to be entered into and removed from saidr cavity vertically.
The cartridge box 0 contains a springpressed platform 72 for elevating the cartridges and on its rearward side has a vertical rib q beveled at its upper end and forming at its lower end a shoulder r. A metal piece which in the construction shown is the trigger guard'at 5 forms a shoulder at the lower rear sideof opening a. When the box is entered into thecavity, it is pressed back by a spring t which, when the box is finally pushed home,'causes the latter to spring rearwardly so that the rib g snaps into abutting relation to the shoulder s. The box may be removed by employing its handle it to force it forward, till its rib at r clears shoulder s, and then downward. Spring t is a plate spring having one end clamped between the barrel and stock and held in place by screw 7, its other end being bent downwardly and curved. According to a well known construction, the breech-bolt is adapted to be blocked against forward movement when it is retracted upon the firing of the last cartridge by engagement of the rib 0 on its forward member 0 with the magazine platform.
To adapt the gun for the firing of cartridges one by one by hand I provide the block '0 conforming generally to the outward shape of the box except that its top face affords a rigid cartridge seat w having a longitudinal depress on or groove :20 to accommodate the rib 0" of the breechbolt. When this adapter has been fitted to the gun in the same manner as the magazine box and in place thereof the cartridges may be fed by hand into the gun through the shell-delivery opening 6. the top or seat 10 supporting the cartridge until the breechbolt is allowed to advance it into the barrelbreech.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z 1. In combination, with the fixed breechincluding part of a gun, and the breeching and firing mechanism, said part having a, magazine-receiving openingand including separate members rigidly secured together,
