To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. KLING- BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Afton, in the county of Ottawa'and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window- .Shields, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with a window of a locomotive cab or the like, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved deviceof this general character which may be readily and conveniently applied to 'or removed from operative position.
It is also an object of my invention to provide a novel and improved shield of this general character which serves to eflectively protect the engine man from the elements and from flying particles, such as dust, sand, cinders or the like, thereby assuring comfort to the engine man and in no way interfering with his duties.
The invention also has for an object to provide a novel and improved shield of this particular type which normally extends beyond a side of a cab or the like, but which may be readily collapsed when the necessities of practice may so require, especially when the shield may contact with obstructions arranged alongside of the trackway.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a shield of this general character having novel and improved means whereby frosting or sweating of a forward window in the shield is prevented.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved shield whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be' hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a window shield constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position;

Fig. 8 is a view, detached,'in perspective, of a screen member which maybe employed in connection with the front end panel of my improved device- As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, C denotes a fragment of a locomotive cab provided with the usual window opening and with which is adapted to coact a conventional sliding window W.
My improved shield is adapted to be positioned within the window opening and projects slightly beyond the side of the cab, but a distance insufficient to. interfere with any restrictions which may be in force with regard to clearance on locomotive cabs.
As herein set forth, my improved shield comprises a rectangular frame Fof predetermined dimensions and having its inner marginal portions provided with the outstanding flanges 1 adapted to overlie the adjacent marginal portions of the window vertical stiles or members of the frame F are the end panels 3 adapted to swing inwardly of the frame F and in orderto afiord an effective joint between the vertical stiles of the frame F and the end panels 3 when in extended or operative position, it is to be observed that the hinged margins of the end panels 3, when extended, seat within the grooves 1 produced in the inner face of the vertical stiles of the frame F, as is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings. It is to be further observed that the grooves 4L coact with the end panels 3 to limit the outward movement of said panels.
The outer vertical portions of the end panels 3 have hingedly connected to the inner faces thereof, as at 5, the side panels 6, said side panels 6 being so mounted relatively to the end panels 3 as to have theouter faces of the side panels 6 substantially flush with the outer edges of the end panels 3 when the end panels are in their operative adjustment. Each of the side panels 6 is of a width substantially equal to one-half of the space between the end panels 3 when extended, and the adjacent vertical marginal portions of the side panels 6 are hingedly connected, as at 7, and in such a manner as to permit the side panels 6 to be drawn inwardly relative to the cab, and it will be perceived that as said side panels 6 are drawn inwardly, the end panels 3 will also be caused to move inwardly so that the structure aflorded by the panels 3 and 6 is substantially retracted within the cab C. The inward folding of the panels 3 and 6 is particularly desirable in the event that there is an obstruction adjacent to the trackway with which the shield, when in operative position, may come into contact.
8 denotes a bottom panel having its ends adjacent to its inner longitudinal marginal portions provided with the trunnions 9 adapted to be mounted in the bearings 10 carried by the frame F at opposite sides of the opening thereof and at its bottom, and said bottom panel 8 is adapted to fall clownwardly by gravity but is normally maintained in operative position through the medium of the spring-pressed catch 11 adapted to be engaged with a keeper 12 carried by one of the side panels 6, as is believed to be clearly shown in the accomp anying drawings. It is to be noted that the bottom panel 8 is offsuch dimensions as to inclose the lower end of the shield when the panels 3 and 6 are in extended or operative adjustment, and it is preferred that the bottom panel 8 be provided with the flanges 14 adapted to extend upwardly relative to the panels 3 and 6 and contact with the inner faces thereof in order to afl'ord a further meansto maintain said panels 3 and 6 in operative position.
15 denotes a top panel extending across the top of the opening of the frame F and hingedly connected, as at 16, to the upper horizontal stile of the frame F, said top panel 15 being adapted to close the top of 1 ,aaaese the shield when the panels 3 and 6 are extended, and said panel 15 is provided with the depending marginal flanges 17 overlying the upper ends of the panels 3 and 6 and engaging the outer faces thereof, whereby a still further means is afiorded for maintaining the panels 3 and 6 in their operative positions.
It is also to be noted that the top panel 15 is adapted to swing downwardly by gravity when the panels 3 and 6 are moved inwardly of the cab C.
In order to prevent the elements or flying particles from entering within the cab at the connection between the top panel 15 and the frame F, I provide the longitudinal apron 18 suitably secured to the upper horizontal stile of the frame F and arranged for contact with the upper surface of the panel 15 when the shield is in operative assemblage. It will be self-evident that the apron 18 serves to limit the upward movement of the top panel 15 and that the apron 18 possesses sufiicient inherent resiliency as to maintain the top panel 15 in proper contact with the upper ends of the panels 3 and 6.
In order that the requisite inward movement may be imparted to the panels 3 and 6, I find it of advantage to provide one of the side panels 6 with the hand grasp 19 and in order that the bottom panel 8 may be raised into closed position, 1 provide the same with the hand grasp 20.
The side panels 6 are provided with suitable openings or windows 21 and preferably permanently closed by the transparent memers 22 such as glass panes or the like, and each of the end panels are also provided with openings or windows 23, the rear end panel being provided with the permanent transparent closure 2 1. It is to be observed that the upper end of the closure member 24: terminates slightly below the upper end of the coacting opening 23 to afford an en trance opening 25 for air, the air so admitted being directed downwardly by the recess 26 formed in the end closure immediately to the rear of the entrance opening 25.
Also coacting with the opening 23 in the rear end panel is the hinged frame 27 adapted to fit snugly within the opening, 23 and provided with the transparent panel 28, the lower end of which terminating slightly above the lower end of the frame 27 to afford an exit opening 29 whereby it will be perceived that the air entering through the opening 25 will pass downwardly between the closure at and panel 28 and out through the opening 29. v
I also find it of advantage to protect the entrance opening 25 by the shield 30 secured to the outer face of the rear end panel 3 and bridging the upper end of the opening 23 therein and also overlying the entrance vided with a transparent opening hereinbefore referred to, it being noted that air may readily pass under the lower end of the shield 30.
The frame 27 may be held within the opening 23 in any desired manner, but as herein disclosed I employ the swinging latches 31 carried by the outer vertical stile of the rear end panel 3 and adapted to overlie the adjacent stile of the frame 27.

I also find it of advantage to provide the orward end panel 3 with the shield 36 secured to the outer face of the forward end panel 3 and bridging the upper end of the opening 23 therein and also overlying the entrance opening 34, it being noted that the air may readily pass under the lower end of the shield 36. The member 32 may be maintained in applied position within the coacting opening 23 of the forward end panel 3, but as herein disclosed, the swinging latches 39 are carried by the upper and lower stiles of the forward end panel 3 and are adapted to overlie the adjacent ends of p the member 32.
When desired the closure member 40 may be employed, said closure member 40 comprising a frame 41 adapted to be positioned within the opening 23 of the forward end panel 3 and provided with the perforate member 42 preferably of wire mesh, whereby it will be perceived that an increased quantity of air may enter within my improved shield, yet at the same time cinders or other flying particles are stopped.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a'shield constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim:
A storm shield consisting of a frame, end panels hingedly connected with the frame, side panels hingedly connected with the end panels, the adjacent ends of the side panels being hingedly connected, a top panel hingedly connected with the frame and adapted to close the upper end of the shield, and a bottom panel hingedly connected with the frame and adapted to close the lower end of the shield.
