To all 107mm imag/'concern' y Be it known that I, CHARLES K. KELLEY, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Lead, in the county of Lawrence and State ot South Dakota, have inventedV newA andl useful Improvements in Gages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a gage and more particularly to that type of gage known as a water gage and used upon boilers, and the like. v
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a gage of this character which is automatically7 operable upon the breaking of the gage tube to prevent the escape'ot fluid from the device with which. the gage is connected.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a gage of thisV character' which is so constructed as to enable gageY tubes of difer'ent lengths to be used in connectit-)nV therewith and upon the breaking of the tube will enable the same to be' quickly and easily replaced.
With these and other objects Vin View7 the invent-ion resides in the novel combination and arrangementr of parts, which will bey hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims. A

Each collar 26 connected with each valve casing 10Y extends with-in a tube holding member-'134 whichv is free to lslide upon-the collar and comprises a sleeve 29l at. one tend of which is an inturned flange forming a stop shoulder V30 and having adj ustably mounted thereon a packing gland 31 forming a water tight connection between the sleeve 29 and collar 26. The other end of the sleeve 29 is closed by a removable plate 32 detachably connected with the sleeve 29 and the valve stem 23, and said plate has formed therein openings 33. The plate 32 is flanged to form a socket 34 into which extends an end on the gage tube 14, said flange having connected therewith a packing gland 35 insuring a water tight joint between the plate 32 and the end of the gage tube.
betweenk the Through the above described manner of connecting the tube holding members with the valve casing 10, it will be seen that the gage tube when connected with said members holds the valves 22 disengaged from the seats 21, so that when the valves 18 are in open position, fluid from the boiler 11 may pass through the pipes 12 and through the gage.
A ring 86 is movable longitudinally of the sleeve 29 and has formed thereon diametrically opposed arms 37, said ring being supported upon a coiled expansion spring 38 encircling the sleeve 29 and bearing on the plate 32, said spring tending to hold the packing in the socket 34 firmly engaged with an end of the gage tube 14.
Each casing 10 has adjustably mounted thereon a sleeve 39 which extends beyond the cap 25 and has adjustably mounted thereon' a band L12 for contact with the arms 37 on the ring 3G, said arms projecting exteriorly of the sleeve through slots 43 therein.
Through the provision of the sleevek 39, il will be seen that by adjusting the sleeve upon the casing 10, the tension of the spring 38 may be regulated, and that through the adjustment of the bands l2 on the sleeves 39, the extent to which the tube holding members may be moved toward the casings 10 against the influence of the springs 38 may be controlled.
WVhen the improved gage has been applied to a boiler as shown in Fig. 1 in the drawings, it will be seen that the gage tube acts in opposition to the springs 88 to hold the valves 22 in open position, and that upon the breaking of the gage tube, the springs 38 will slide the tube holding members on the collars 26 to a position in which the valves 22 will seat on the seats 21 and prevent the escape of Huid from the boiler 11'.
l/Vith the valves 22 in the above described position and it is desired to replace the gage tube, the valves 18 are operated to close communication between the chamber 17 and boiler 11, after which one of the tube hold ing members 13 may be moved toward the valve casing connected therewith against Copies of this patent may be obtained for the influence ci a spring 38 to permit the ends of the new tube to be arranged in the sockets 3d on the tube holding members.
llith the new tube in place, the sleeves 39 may be adjusted on the casings 10 to increase or decrease the tension on the springs 3821s the occasion requires, to insure a water tight joint being formed between the ends of the gage tubes and the packings in the sockets Bel when the valves 18 are again moved to open position.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.v it is at once apparent that a water gage has been provided which is so constructed that different lengths oit gage tubes may be used in connection therewith, and is operable upon the breaking of a gage tube to prevent the escape of Huid from the device with which the lnage is connected.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
ll. A gage comprising valve casings, valves mounted to slide therein, tube holding members connected with said valves, springs engaging the tube holding members to slide the same, a gage tube connected with the tube holding members and adapted to act in opposition to said springs. rings engaging said springs, and sleeves adjustably mounted on said casings and engaging said rings.
2. A gage comprising valve casings, caps closing the outer ends of said casings, valves carried by said caps, valves mounted to slide within said casings, tube holding members mounted to slide on said casings and connected with said last-named valves, a gage tube engaged by the tube holding members and arranged therebetween, springs engaging said tube holding members to hold the same in engagement with said gage tube, sleeves adjustably mounted on said casings and having slots therein, bands adjustably mounted on said sleeves, rings encircling said tube holding members and bearing on said springs, and arms on said rings passing through the slots in said sleeves.
