Be it known that I, FRANK B. SonnYLnR, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda. and
State of California, haveinvented new-and '7 useful Improvements in Operating Mechanism for \Vashing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a clothes wringer and particularly to a wringer mounting and drive, said wriuger mounting and drive being a division of my co-pending application entitled W'ashing-machine, Serial #68,166, allowed June 2, 1916.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide asimple, compact, easily operated washing machine and WI'lIlgGI, whereby to complete the several operations of washing, such as boiling, scrubbing, rinsing, bluing and wringing, which may be accomplished by a simple manipulation of the mechanism, requiring expenditure of comparatively little effort, time, or attention on the part of the operator.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel form of power driven mechanism for washing and scrubbing the clothes, and particularly to provide a novel form of wringer mounting operable in conjunction with said driving mechanism and movable from one tub to another where several are employed.
Further objects will hereinafter appear.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of'parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to theaceompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the washing machine and the Wringer.

Referring to the drawings in detail, A indicates a frame constructed of channel, angle iron or like material, upon which, are mounted three tubes such as indicated at 2, 3, and 4. Supported on one side of the frame is a pair of bearing brackets 5 and 6, and journaled in said brackets is a driving shaft 7 provided with a pulley 8 which may be driven by an electric motor or any other suitable source of power not here shown.
The tub 2 is used for washing or scrubbing the clothes; the tub 3 for rinsing; and the tub 4 for bluing. 'All the tubs may be directly connected with a water main for filli-ng purposes and may also be provided with drain plugs 9 which are directly connected with the sewer in the usual manner.
These connections eliminate the necessil y of rigidly secured upon the frame as it is never necessary to change their position. The washing mechanism employed in connection with the tub indicated at 2, forms no mate rial part of the present invention as it has been fully described and claimed in my copending application previously referred to.
This washing machine is however driven directly from the shaft 7 by means of the gears indicated at 1-5. The wringer generally indicated at B is also driven from the shaft 7 through the gears 12 and 13 shown. The wringer proper consists of a fork shaped frame 10 pivotally mounted on the shaft 7 and adapted to be supported by the tubs at the opposite end by an extension 10 formed on the bracket 10. Suitably secured on the extension 10 is a Wringer B which is provided with a pair of rollers 16. One roller 16 is directly driven from the gear 13 Which in turn is driven from the shaft 7 by means of the pinion 12.
This pinion is secured upon a bushing 18 which is keyed but slidably mounted in a continuous keyway 7 a formed in the driving shaft. It is therefore possible'to move the gearzl2-into or out of mesh with the gear 13 whenever desired, this being accomplished by providing a shifting frame 19 shown in Fig. 3 which in turn is moved to one side or another by means of the lever 20 pivotally mounted as at 21 on the lower side of the wringer. The pivotal mounting of the .wringer permits it to be gripped and tilted to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2.
'.The wringer may then he slid along the shaft 7 and into alinement with any tub desired, where it may again be lowered and sible to throw the wringer into operation by merely swinging the lever 20 in the direction of the arrow. This moves the gear 12 into mesh with the gear 13 and thereby transmits revolving movement to the rollers 16. The shifting of the \vringer from one position to another With relation to the tubs may take place while the gears 12 and 13 are in mesh or when they are out of mesh, no especial care being therefore required when shifting the Wringer at any time.
The whole arrangement of the structure and mechanism here shown, permits the complete and several operations of washing to take place with the least possible amount of exertion on the part of the operator. The provision of a gas burner such as indicated at 30 permits the clothes to be boiled directly in tub 2 as they are being washed, in this manner taking care of every possible phase of clothes Washing.
The materials and finish of the several parts of the device may otherwise be such as the experience and judgment of the manufacturer may dictate.
I wish it understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims, and that I do not Wish to limit myself to the specific design or construction here shown.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the type set forth, a frame, a plurality of alined elements on said frame. a driving shaft paralleling said elements, a frame slidably and pivotally mounted at one end on said shaft and formed to engage and be supported from a selected one of said elements, a driven device on the frame, and means to drive said device from the shaft in all positions of said device.
'2. In combination with a plurality of alined elements and a driving shaft common to each of the elements, a driven de vice, means to support said driven device from one end thereof and from said shaft so as to allow said driven device to be moved lengthwise of the shaft to thereby be posi tioned opposite any selected one of said elements and supported from its opposite end by said selected element, said means also enabling vertical oscillatory movement of said opposite end of said device to allow same to be raised out of engagement with an element and moved along the shaft and then engaged with a different element to be supported thereby, and means to drive the driven device from the shaft in all positions of the device.
In a device of the type set forth, a plurality of alined elements, a driving shaft, a driven device, a frame carrying said driven device and slidably supported from said shaft, a gear connected to the driven device, a gear slidably keyed to the driving shaft and meshing With said first gear, a frame slidably carried by said first frame, means on the second frame to engage and slide said slidable gear independent of movement of the first frame, and a lever borne by the first frame and connected to said second frame for sliding the latter.
4. In a device of the type set forth, a plurality of alined elements, a driving shaft, a slidable and pivotal frame on the shaft formed so as to receive support from a selected one of said elements, a driven device on the frame, means to operate said device from the shaft in all positions thereof, and
means movable with the frame for rendering said last named means operable or inoperable at will.
In a device of the type set forth, a plurality of alined elements, a driving shaft at the rear of said elements, a driven device, a horizontal frame carrying the driven device and connected at its rear end to said shaft and having its front end arranged adjacent the front of one of said elements, disconnectible means to drive the driven device from the driving shaft, and a horizontal lever pivoted to the frame and connected to said disconnectible driving means and extending beyond the front end part of the frame.
6. In combination with a plurality of alined elements, and a driving shaft, a frame having a fork which latter is apertured to receive the shaft, a driven device on the frame having a gear, a bushing slidably keyed on the driving shaft and slidable in one of said fork apertures, a gear on the bushing for mesh with the first gear, and means to slide said bushing independent of movement of the frame.
