To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, Ennns'r Lnwrs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Burlington, county of Burlington, State of New Jersey, have invented Cut-Ofi' Regu variant conditions occurring in the operation of these engines, will be apparent to one skilled in the art.
The device herein described has a special application to engines having the Corliss valve gear and consists in a novel .arrangef ment of the reach rods controlling the cutof? mechanisms, wherein a link is interposed between the rods of the high and low pressure cylinders. The link carries a set screw which when turned varies the range of cut off in the low pressure cylinder, there being a correspondingvariation in the range of the high pressure cut ofi', due to the action of the governor, to which the reach rods on the high pressure side are connected. To points on the link, or allied members, are attached by suitable connecting means the pointers of a I compound indicating gage which is set to indicate the exact range of cut off in the cylinders.

The indicator is shown in detail in Figs. 4 and 5. Within the casing 28 are ivotally mounted the segmental gears 29 and 30'each having an extension, respectively 31 and 32, to the extremities of which are connected the I rods 26 and 27 I These ears mesh with the segmental gears 33; an 34 which are pivotally mounted as shown and which carry the hands or pointers 35 and 36, said pointers indicating respectively the ran eof cut off in the high and low pressure c lin ers, It will be noticed that a single a uated scale, 37,

he following is one method for calibrating the scale of the gage. The travel of the high pressure piston may be laid ofi on the crosshead guide as defin'ed by the position of the crosshead when the engine is on its dead centers, and this distance divided into any number, say ten, of equal parts. For the low pressure cylinder the procedure is the same with the exception that the adjusting screw 15 is used to'trip the valve mechanism.

In acompound engine the combination with high and low pressure cylinders, of inlet and outlet valves therefor, a governor, a link mechanism consisting of two pivoted arms, the governor and high pressure valve mechanism being connected to one arm and said low pressure valve mechanism being connected to the other arm, and a manually operated adjusting member connecting said pivoted arms for independently adjusting the cut off in the low pressure cylinder.

In a compound engine, in combination with high and low pressure cylinders suplplied with cut off valves, a governor, a link mechanism comprising two pivoted lever arms, rods connecting one arm to the govern'or and to the cut oil valves of the high pressurecylinder, rods connecting the other arm to the out 01f valves of the low pressure cylinder, and an adjusting member con necting the two arms whereby an independpressure cut off ent adjustment of the low may be obtained.

In combination with the governor and valve mechanism of a compound engine, a link consisting of two armspivotally mounted and adjustably connected, a rod co'nnecting one arm to the governor, said arm being also connected to the cut off mechanism of the high pressure cylinder and said other arm being connected to the out off mechanism of the low pressure cylinder, and a gage having two pointers connected respectively to the said two arms, for indicating the range of cut off in the cylinders.
