Beit known that I, KARL A. SIMMON, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Edgewood Park, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvanimhave invented a new and useful Improvement in tween the various conducting membersy Insulators, of which the following is a specication.- Y c My invention relates to electricalinsulators and particularly to'strain insulators.
One object of my invention is to provide a strain insulator which will withstand high-potential stresses without rupture of the insulating material embodied therein and which will be inexpensive to manufacture. i U y Another object of my invention isto provide an insulator in lwhich the gaps be- -l which may be -assembled together to provide insulatorsfor various voltages.
Heretofore, insulators have been provided which had a plurality of gaps in series-cire cuit relation between the conducting members embodied in the insulator but such inl sulators havebeen relatively expensive to manufacture, and the insulating material 'connecting the parts of the insulator has been subjected to a tensilestress when force was applied to the insulator.
My minvention provides an' insulator in which the gaps' between the conducting members embodiedin the insulator are arranged ina series-circuit relation. Fur# thermore, the ,parts of the insulator are so, designed that various numbers of parts may be assembled to provide insulators for various voltages.

The insulator shown in the drawing comprises connecting members 1 and 2, `a member 3 interposed between the connecting members 1 and 2, clamping members4 and 5, insulation 6, and a protective casing 7 Specification of Letters Patent. The connecting members 1 and 2 are severally provided with enlarged inner end portions 10 which are lincased in insulation 11, and with a threaded socket 12'by means of which the connecting members may be secured` to other insulators or to conductors which are electrically separated by the insulator. The member 3, which may be cylindrical inform, is provided with enlarged end portions 13 vand 14 which are also re.
spectively incased in insulation- 11. The members 1,l 2 and 3 are assembled in endto-end relation, andthe adjacent enlarged insulated portions 10'and13 and 10 and 14 are respectively incased by members 4 and 5 which clamp the members 1. and 3, and 2 and 3 together into a rigid unit. An insulating disk 15 is provided to electrically separate the clamping members 4 and 5. A groove 16 is provided in the inner side of the disk 15 in orderto increase the creepage distance between members 4 and 5. The assembled insulator parts 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are embedded in the insulation and are (surrounded by the protective -insulating casing 7 to mechanically protect the insuylator parts.
It will be understood, from the above de-V scription, that the various parts constituting the insulator will severally constitute condenser plates and will` distribute the voltage stress' which is applied across the members 1 and 2. It should also be noted that the member 3 is of such construction that any 'desired number of such members may be interposed between the end-connecting members 1 and2 to provide an insulator 'for any desired voltage. asillustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. Thel incasing member 7 is not essential to the invention herein disclosed but, when emploved, may be composed of porcelain or similar material.
Although I have described a particular embodiment oi' my invention, it should be understood that various modifications of the insulator may be constructed without `departing from the spirit and scopeof my invention. I desire that only such limitations shall be imposed as are indicated in the appended claims. y

1. A unitary insulator comprising end` members each having an enlarged end portion, Aa metallic member interposed between said end members and insulated therefrom,
andA insulated metallic means for clamping said members together.
2. -A unitary insulator comprising l, end members each having an enlarged end portion, a metallic member having enlarged ends and interposed between said end members and insulated therefrom, and a metallic shell for incasing adjacent enlarged portions and clamping the same together.
3. A. unitary insulator comprising end members each having an enlarged 'end p0rtion, a metallicmember having enlarged ends and interposed between said end members and insulated therefrom, and insulated metallic members for respectively incasing each pair of adjacent enlarged end portions to clamp said memberstogether;
4. A unitary insulator. comprising conn'ecting members having enlarged inner end portion-s, an interposed member having enlarged ends, and incasing members for respectively clamping said end portions t0- gether, all of said members being embedded in insulating material 'and insulated from all other of said members.
5. An insulator'comprising end members respectively having an enlarged end portion surrounded 'by insulating material, a member having enlarged ends and'similarly in'- sulated, said members being assembled in end-toend relation, with said enlarged portions adjacent, and incasing members for clamping said adjacent enlarged portions together.
6. An insulator comprising end members.
respectively having an enlarged end portion surrounded `by insulating material, a member having enlarged ends and similarly insulated, said members being assembled in end-to-end relation, with said enlargedportions adjacent, and a clamping member for holding one pair of said adjacent enlarged portions together.
7 An insulator comprising end members respectively having enlarged end portions surrounded by' insulating material, a mem-- ber having enlarged ends and similarly insulated, said members beingl assembled in end-to-end relation, with said enlarged portions adjacent, and metallic members for respectively clamping said adjacent end portions together, said metallic members being embedded in insulating material. j
8. An insulator comprising end members respectively having enlarged end portions surrounded by insulating material, a member having enlarged ends and similarly insulated, said `members being assembled in end-to-end relation,-with said enlarged portions adjacent, incasing members for clamping said adjacent enlarged portions together, -said incasing members being embedded in insulation, and an insulating jacket surrounding all of said members.
9. An insulator comprising end members respectively having enlarged end portions, a member having enlarged yends and inter- -posed between said end members, said members being assembled 'with said enlarged portions adjacent, an incasing member for clamping said adjacent enlarged portions together, and means' for insulating each of said members.

An insulator comprising metallic connecting member having an enlarged end portion, a member having enlarged ends, the enlarged portions of said members being insulated and assembled in end-to-end relation, with the enlarged portions adjacent, a metallic member for .clamping said enlarged portions together, and insulating material surrounding all of said members.
11. An insulator comprising end members respectively having enlarged end portions, a member having enlarged ends and interposed between said end members, said members being assembled in end-toend relation, an incasing member for clamping each pair of enlarged end portions together, an insulating disk having a grooved inner surface and interposed between said incasing members, and means for insulating each of said members.
