Description

J. J. LALLY.
i FOOT BLOCKING FOR SWITCH FROGS.
I APPLICATION FILED IIAII. 23` |911. 1,246,439.
`2 SHEETS-SHEET l.
Patented N0v.`13, 1917,
fthe balls of the intersecting tion between'the' 'rails of the tracks A. and B, and reduced and terminally provided with depending rectangular Shaped heads 13,-ythe opposite ends of which extend beyond the sldes of the free ends of the blocks and 9l and underlie the adjacent sides of rails and the guard rails, and are adapte to engage the same so as to limit the upward movement of the free ends of the blocks 9 and 9% The blocks 9 and 9n have those sides which oppose the usual deflected ends of the guard rails D and E, provided with Alateral extensions 14, which lie in close proximity to the deflected ends of the guard rails D and' E and fill the space between the deflected ends of the guard rails and the intersecting rails.
The guard rail F is provided with the usual deflected ends, and interposed between the deflected ends of the guard rail F and the adjacent rail of the track A is a air of foot blocks 15, which, like the bloclls 1, 8 and 9, areformed of resilient metal plates. Each of the blocks 15 has one end provided, as shown in Fig; 3, with a vertical flange 1G formed integral with one side edge thereof, and has connection with the web of the adjacent track rail, in any suitable manner. The blocks 15 are bent upwardly adjacentthe fianged ends, as shown at 17, and then extended horizontallyas at 18, and the free terminals of the horizontally extended portions 18 are provided with depending rectangular shaped heads 19, the opposite ends of which project beyond the sides of the free ends of the blocks and engage beneath the balls of the tracks and guard rails for limiting the upward movement of the blocks 15. The blocks 15 are also provided with lateral extensions 20, which fill the spaces between the track rail and the adjacent deflected ends of the ard rail F. n
It will be noted, by referring to the drawings, that the horizontal portions of the free ends of the blocks liein close proximity to the tread surfaces'of the rails ofthe tracks A and B so that the same will beengaged bythe Wheel flanges 'of the car trucks during the passage o f rolling stockl over the points of intersection between the tracks of .the main rail and the side limi,l the 'engage ment between the flan es of the wheels'and the free ends of the b ocks resultin 'in de-v pression of the free en'ds of the bloc so as to prevent the tread surfaces of the wheels from being raised from engagement with the tread surfaces of the balls of the rails. By virtue of having the free ends of theblo'cks lying in close roximity to the tread surfaces of the balls o the rails of the tracks danger of an object or the foot of a person becoming wedged between either the intersecting rails of the main line and side line, or between the guard rails and the adjacent trackrails will be overcome. I
It is evident that various changesmight be resorted to in the construction, forman arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the vention as claimed.
Having thus described my I claim as new, is:
1. A foot block adapted to be located be tween the intersecting rails of a switch frog or between one of the rails of a track and a guard rail, including a plate formed of reinvention what silient metal being bent'to provide an upwardly extending portion, 'a horizontally disposedl depressible portion adapted to lie.
the horizontal portion thefterminal of'the I upwardly extending portion provided with a head adapted to engage beneath the balls of the rails limiting the upward movement of the upwardly extending portion, and means for securin the horizontal portion to the web of the rai s.
2. A foot block adapted to be located between the intersecting rails of a 'switch frog or between one of the rails of a trackand a guard rail and including a resilient depressible plate having one end providedwithaJ flange for attachment with one of the rails.
