Be it known that l, SAMUEL A. BENNER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a nen7 and useful Improvement in Side-Frame Constructions; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates Vto improvementsin truck side-frames and is particularly concerned with the construction of a side-frame in which all parts, including the pedestal, are formed of rolled sections of steel.
T he object of the invention is theV produc tion of a side-framey of great strength in proportion to its weight and one in which the parts may be very readily and strongly assembled. l
A further object is to secure a very material reduction in the cost of manufacture, both in the production of the parts of the frame and also in the labor of assembling;
A further Objectis to so construct and arrange the parts that the riveting operations will be simplified as much as possible, by arranging the parts so that all riveting will be open riveting.
Furthermore, the side-frame forming the subject matter of this case has the advantage that the transverse webs of the compression and tension members and also of the pedestal are spaced as far as the limits of the construction will allow, from the neutral axis of strain of the frame. This neutral axis, as is well known to persons skilled in this art, is in the line at which the compression and tension strains neutralize each other in a truss of the form here considered, and extends longitudinally of the frame and a little below the center of the pedestal. By so locating the webs of the main truss members of the f 'ame at the maximum distance from this neutral line, the greatest possible strength is secured.
In the drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a section of a form of compression member employed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation.

y The sheared away portions of the flanges 3 3 along the lines 7 and flush with the web l, bring the outer ends of the compression member into the cross-sectional form shown4 in Fig. 6. ln other words, these ends are reduced to simple upwardly opening channel form. Y
This compression member so sheared, is then bent to the shape shown in F ige.
The Ytension member of the side-frame is preferably formed of a rolled section such as that illustrated in Fig. 5, and comprises a web l0, the side-walls ll andlaterally extendingy flanges l2. These lateral flanges are sheared off along the lines 13,'Fig. 3, to
also be employed with advantage as a truck or car bolster by simply providing the central portion thereof with a suitable form of center bearing plate, and by securing at the ends side bearing plates and bolster guides. Such parts are not specifically illustrated but it is to be understood that this invention is intended to cover not only a side-frame including such compression member, but also such member per .Se considered as a car part.
Vhile I have herein shown and described a particular embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the same may be altered in details and relative arrangements of parts within the scope of the appended claims.
'lV hat I claim is:
l. A truck side frame having its compres sion and tension members formed of rolled channel shaped sections, one of which has channel shaped portions narrower than those of the other, so that the ends of one member may nest within the corresponding ends of the other', either one or both of said channel shaped sections being of double channel differential shape.
2. A truck side-frame having its compression member formed of a rolled differential channel shaped section, and a tension member formed of a rolled channel shaped section, the upper channel of the compression member being of less width than that of the Ytension member whereby the upwardly opening channel shaped ends of the compression member may nest within the channel shaped ends of the tension member, the upper flanges of the compression memberv being sheared at the central portion thereof, to bring the central portion of the web of the. compression member toward or to the top.
3. A truck side-frame having itscompression member formed of a rolled differential channel shaped section, and a tension member formed of a rolled channel shaped-section, the upper channel of the compression member being of less width than that of the tension member whereby the4 upwardly opening channel shaped ends of the compression member may nest within the channel shaped ends of the tension member, the upper flanges of the compression member being sheared at the central portion thereof to bring the central portion of the web of the compression member toward or to the top, the lower flanges of the compression member being sheared olf adjacent the ends thereof to permit said ends to be nested within the corresponding ends of the tension member.

A truck side-frame having its compression member formed of a rolled differential channel shaped section, and a tension member formed of a rolled channel shaped Y' section, the upper channel of the compression member being of less width than that ber being sheared at the central portion thereof to bring the central portion of the Vweb of the compression member toward or to the top, the lower flanges of the compression member forming at the central portion thereof a downwardly opening channel to receive the upper side of the pedestal.
5. A truck side-frame having its compression member formed of a rolled differential. channel shaped section, and a tension member formed of a rolled channel shaped section, the upper channel of the compression member being of less width than that of the tension member whereby the upwardly open. ing channel shaped ends of the compression member may nest within lthe channel shaped ends of the tension member, the upper flanges of the compression member being sheared at the central portion thereof toA bring the central portion o f the web of the compression member toward or to the top, the downwardly opening channel portion at the center of the compression member and the upwardly opening channel portion at the center of the tension member forming seats to embrace the 'upper and lower portions respectively of the pedestal member.
6. A truck side-frame having its compression member formed of a rolled di'erential channel shaped section, and a tension member formed of a rolled channel shaped section, the upper channel of the compression member being of less width than that of the tension member whereby the upwardly opening channel shaped ends of the compression member may nest within the channel shaped ends of the tension member, the upper flanges of the compression member being sheared at the central portion thereof tobring the central portion of the web of the compression member toward or to the top, the compression and tension members having oppositely opening channel portions at the central portions thereof, and a pedestal member composed of a rolled channel shaped section having its web at its outside, said pedestal member being seated within the channel portions of the compression and tension members respectively, with p its web in contact with the webs of the compression and tension members respectively.
7. A truck side-frame having its compression member Vformed of a rolled differential channel shaped section, and a tension member formed of a rolled channel shaped section, the upper channel of the compression member being of less width than that of the ytension member whereby the upwardly opening channel shaped ends of the compresf sion member may nest within the channel shaped ends of the tension member, the upper flanges of the compression member being sheared at the central portion. thereof to bring the central portion of the web of the compression member toward or to the top, said compression and tension members having oppositely opening channel portions at the central parts thereof respectively, and a pedestal formed of a rolled channel sect-ion of the same width throughout and having its web at the outside thereof, said pedestal being adapted to be seated within the central channel portions of the compression and tension members, respectively.

A truck side-frame having its compression member formed of a rolled diderential channel shaped section, and a tension vmember formed of a rolled channel shaped section, the upper channel of the compression member being of a less width than that of the tension member whereby the upwardly opening channel shaped ends of the compression member may nest within the channel shap( il ends of the tension member, the upper flanges of the compression member being shoared at the central portion thereof to bring the central portion of the web of the compression member toward or to the top, said compression and tension members respectively having oppositely opening central channel members of the same inside width, a pedestal formed of a rolled channel section of uniform width throughout having its web at the outside thereof whereby said pedestal member may be seated wit-hin said channel portions of the compression and tension members respectively, vith the web of said pedestal in contact with the webs of the compression and tension members respectively.
9. A truck side-frame having its compression member formed of a rolled differential channel shaped section having the side walls of the lower channel sheared o at the ends of the section, and having the side walls of the upper channel sheared ofi' at the' center port-ion, a tension member formed of a rolled channel shaped section, of a width to snugly receive the upper channel shaped end portions of the compression member whereby said ends may be nested snugly within the channeled end portions of the tension member, and whereby the web of the compression member vill be at the top at the center of said member and the web of the tension member will be at the 'bottom throughout said member.

A truck side-frame having itsl compression member formed of a rolled differential channel shaped section having its web extending laterally at either side of the channel portions to form strengthening flanges and a tension member formed of achannel-shaped section having its side-walls flanged laterally, the lower flanges and the lateral fianges of said compression member being sheared off adjacent'the ends of said member whereby said ends may be nested within the channel shaped ends of the tension member, the lateral flanges of said tension member vbeing sheared olf at the 'ends to eliminate material not necessary for effective strength and to afford clearance for the wheels.
13. A truck side-frame having its compression member formed of a rolled diderential channel shaped section the side walls of the lower channel being sheared ofl' ad jacent the ends of said section, the side walls of the upper channel being sheared off at the center to bring the web of said section toward or to the top at the center thereof and leave upwardly opening channel shaped ends for said member and a downwardly opening channel shaped central portion for said member, a tension member formed of a channel shaped section of an inside width equal to the inside width of the downwardly opening channel shaped portion of' the compression member, and a pedestal formed of a rolled channel section of uniform width throughout whose web is at the outside thereof, said pedestal being adapted to be received within the downwardly opening channelof the compression member and the upwardly opening` channel of the tension member whereby the side walls of said pedestal may be riveted to the side walls of the compression and tension members, respectively.
14. A truck side-frame comprising a compression member having upwardly opening channel shaped portions at its ends and a downwardly opening` channel shaped portion at its center whereby the web ot said member forms the bottom walls thereof at the ends ot' said member and the top wall thereof, at the center of said member and a tension member formed of a rolled channel shaped section within the channel shaped ends of which the channel shaped ends of the compression member are received and secured.
15. A truck side-frame comprising a compression member ha *ing upwardly opening channel shaped portions at its ends and a downwardly openingchannel shaped portion at its center whereby the web of said member forms the bottom walls thereotl at the ends and the top wall thereof at the center, and a tension member formed of a rolled channel shaped section within the channel shaped ends of which the channel shaped ends of the compression member are received and secured, and a pedestal formed of a channel shaped section adapted to be seated and secured within the central channel shaped portions of the compression and tenupwardly opening` channel shaped portions.

A truck side-frame having its compression member formed of a rolled diien ential channel shaped section and a tension member formed of a rolled channel shaped section, the upper channel of the compression member being` of less width than that oit' the tension member, whereby the upwardly opening channel shaped ends of the compression member may nest within the channel shaped ends .of the tension member, the inside width of the downwardly opening channel portion of said'compression member being` initially the same as tnat of the tension member, the side walls ot said downwardlj7 opening channel portions of the compression member being` sheared off adjacent the ends of said member and the slieared ends of said side walls being` inset to fit within the adjacent portions of the tension member.

A. trucl; side-frame having its conipression member formed of a rolled difierential channel shaped section, the upper' channel of the compression member being of less width than that of the tension member whereby the upwardly opening channel shaped ends ot the compression member may nest within the channel shaped ends of the tension member, the upper iianges of the compression member being sheared at the central portion thereot` to bring the central portion of the web of the compression member toward or to the top, said compression and tension members respectively having oppositely opening` central channel menibers of the same inside width, a pedestal formed of a rolled channel section, the outside width of pedestal being same as inside width of opposite channel parts of compression and tension members, whereby said pedestal member may be seated within said channel portions ot the compression and tension members respectively, with the web of said pedestal in contact with the webs of the compression and tension members respectively.
