This invention relates to an improved type of lock for a hinged member mounted in a frame such as a window or door permitting the hinged member to be rigidly and securely locked in any open position of adjustment or in tightly closed position in the frame, the mechanism operating, when the hinged member is locked in closed position, to draw the hinged member tightly.

It is an object therefore of this invention to construct a lock, the mechanisms of which are connected on one or the other of a hinged member, whether it be a door'or a window, and the frame therefor, wherebythe door or window maybe locked in any open position of adjustment and rigidly held from movement therein, or in a closed position, and when so locked, drawn tightly closed in its frame.
It is also an object of this invention to construct a locking mechanism for connection upon a hingedly mounted door or window adapted to be secured to the door or window and to the hinged side of the frame therefor, comprising means extensible to permit opening of the door or window and locking of the same in any open position of adjustment, and when in closed position operating positively to exert considerable tension on said means to draw the door or window tightly closed in its frame and t0fretain the same locked therein.
It is furthermore an important object of this invention to construct a lock with a.
resilient flexible member forming a part thereof having sliding engagement with a casing secured upon a door or window, said flexible member connected in any suitable manner with the frame for the door or win- I (low, and with means within said casing for positively engaging said flexible member to draw the door tightly closed 111 locked position in the frame and to positively-release said flexible member to permit opening of the door, and with auxiliary means for coaction withsaid flexible member to lock the doorin any open position of adjustment. It is finally an object of this invention to construct a simple, compact locking mechanism consisting of few parts, easy to install and not liable to get out of order and particularly well adapted for use on automobile doors to draw the same tightly closed and prevent rattling thereof.
The invention (ina preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.

As shown in the drawings:
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 1, indicates as a whole a frame of any suitable construction in which is hingedly mounted adoor or window designated as a whole by the reference numeral 2, and connected on the hinge side of the frame 1, and to the door or window 2, is a locking mechanism embodying the principles of my invention. For this purpose a relatively shallow casing 3, is provided having attaching flanges 'l, on each side thereof adapted to be mounted in horizontal position on the door or in a' position such that the longitudinal aXis thereof is at right angles to the axis of the hinge connection bet-ween the door and the frame. Laid flat against the inner wall of the casing 3, is a long slide plate 5, with outwardly projecting longitudinal parallel guide ribs 6, formed integrally along the edges thereof and projecting perpendicularly therefrom and at their rear ends as clearly shown 1n Flgs. 7 and 8, turned 1n op posite directions to afford stops or a-butments which extends outwardly through a gap 11,
in the end of said rectangular portion 8, and at its end 1s provlded with a curved slightly elongated slot 12, which fits around an eccentric or cam 13, secured on, or formed integral with a handle 14:, which is journaled through an outwardly struck portion of the casing 3.
Secured centrally through the circular portion 9, of said connecting rod 10, is a hardened steel pin 15, beveled on its rear surface as clearly shown in Figs. 15 and 16, the purpose of which will be hereinafter pointed out, said pin, however, having no re lation to'the connection between the portion 9, of said-lever 10, and the rectangular portion 8, of the plate 5. At one side of the forward end of said connecting lever 10, a Hattened abutment surface 16, is provided which, when. the cam 13, is rotated in a clockwise direction to throw the forward end of said lever downwardly, strikes against the side wall of the casing 3, to limit the movement thereof. Laid flat upon the portion 8, of the slidablc plate 5, at one side of the casing, and also resting against the flat surface of the connecting'lever 10, is a releasing bar or plate 17, oneend of which is turned inwardly to afford a stop for a compression spring 18, the other end of said spring 18, bearing against one of the stops 7, formedon the slidable plate The other end'of said bar 17, is provided with a toothed portion 19, adapted to mesh with a mutilated gear 20, formed or rigidly secured on said handle 14;, to rotate therewith wnerehy said plate or bar 17, may be moved rearwardly against the compression of the spring 18.

flexible strap 29, passed therethrough and extending into the casing 3, lying flat against the slidable plate 5, between the ribs 8, and projecting forwardly normally into a position over the circular member 9, of the connecting lever 10, and there provided with an elongated slot 30, for engagement over the pin 15. The purpose of the beveled or inclined member 21, willbe apparent, for when the bar 17, is moved rearwardly, the chamfered edge of said inclined portion 21, engages beneath the end of the strap 29, elevating the same out of engagement with the pin 15, permitting retraction of said flexible strap 29, as the door 2, is swung open. 'Likcwise the reason for beveling the rearward edge of saidpin 15, will be obvious, for when the door is swung from open to closed position, the inner or forward end of said strap 29, will ride upwardly over the inclined surface of the pin 15, and with continued inward movement of the strap, the slot 30, therein, will engageover' said locking pin 15. Said strap 29, extends through said tubular member 27, and at its other end is rigidly secured in a plug 31, a detail of construction of which is shown in lhg. i, which is threaded for adjustment '1] to the end of a long rod 32, telescoping within said tubular member 27, and pivoted in a bracket secured on the frame 1, by means of a pintle 3%.
An auxiliary means is provided for the purpose of locking the door or window when the same is swung into an open position, as well as when in a closed position, and for this purpose a collar 35, is fitted over the rear end of the tubular member 27, which is slotted on opposite sides and threaded into a boss on said collar is a compression screw having an actuating head 37, which acts, when threaded inwardly, to clamp the slotted end of said tubular member 27, around the rod 32, thus preventing sliding movement thereof through the same,
and holding the door in any desired position of adjustment.
In the modified form of my device illustrated in Figs. 18'to 23, inclusive, l have shown as before casing 3, with attaching flanges 4, thereon, and the slidable resilient strap 29, projecting thereinto. I also utilize a centrally disposed slide plate denoted by the reference numeral 38, provided with perpendicular ribs 39, on each side thereof affording a guiding means for the strap 29, and atone end provided with laterally directed abutments to, to receive seated thereagainst the respective compression springs ll and a2 respectively. At the forward end of said slide plate 38, a pivot pin e3, isprovided on which is journaled one end of a connectin lever 4: 1, the other end of which is provided with ail-elongated slot fitting around an eccentric 45, secured on a handle so, journaled' in the casing. Laid over said connecting lever 44, is a release plate 47,
which at its central portion as clearly shown I in Fig. 18, is of a width to extend entirelyacross between the flanges 4, ofthe casing 3, to slide longitudinally within said casing, and at its rear end is provided with an inturned abutment 48, against which the forward end of the spring 11, bears to resist rearward movement of said plate, and said plate is also provided with a beveled portion 49, adapted to engage beneath the re,- silient strap 29, to elevate the same out of engagement with a locking pin 50, provided on said slide plate 38. For the purpose of moving said plate rearwardly and actuating the locking mechanism into locking position, a mutilated gear 56, is secured "or formed upon the handle 4:6, beneath the eccentric 45, thereon, and is adapted to mesh with the teeth 57, formed on the for'wardend of said. slidable bar 53. Said slidable bar 53, is provided with an inwardly extending abutment 58, adapted to bear against the flattened rear surface of the mutilated pinion 56, to limit forward projection of said bar by the spring :2. Similarly a portion of said plate 47, contacts a. rear fiat edge of the mutilated pinion 52,. to limit the forward projection of said plate due to the compres sion of the spring 41.
Secured flat against the inner surface of the casing 3, at the rear end thereof, is a bracket 59, through which said flexible strap 29, extends, and rigidly secured in said bracket is a sleeve 60, within which is threaded a compression screw 61, adapted when threaded inwardly to bear against the strap 29, thrusting the same against said bracket to clamp the strap and prevent movement thereof, thereby holding the door in any desired prsition of adjustment. Formed integral with said bracket 59, are a pair of rearwardly extending yoke arms 62, within which is journaled one end of a tubular member 63, by means of a tubular pintle 64c, slotted to receive said strap 29, slidable therethrough, whereby said strap acts to hold said pintle in place. The tubular member 63, is constructed identically with the tubular member 27, referred to in the foregoing description of the other form of my device and the other connections between the same and the frame for the door or window may also be exactly similar.
In Figs. 2lto 28 inclusive, l have shown another modified form of my device, wherein the casing 3, is provided as before with the slotted end of flexible shaft 29, projecting thereinto through the bracket 59, provided with the compression means for clamping said strap to prevent movement through the casing. However, the construc tion is slightly different in that a slide plate 65, is provided mounted flat against the in ner wall of the casing 3, and having a locking pin 66 secured thereto similar to the locking pin 15, already described, and formed at each side of said slidable plate 65, are out wardly turned abutments 67, against which bear the rear ends of a pair of compressionv springs 68 and 69 respectively. Seated loosely within T-shaped slot in said slidable plate 65, is a small tilting plate 70, having outwardly and laterally turned lugs or cars 71, thereon. Laid flat against the plate 65, is a long plate 72, having along rectangular recess 73, therethrough and pro vided with. lateral extensions 7 l, which rest behind the abutments 67 of said plate 65, and at its rear end said plate 72, is arched outwardly and provided with an integral cross-piece 75, wnich bears against the respective ears or lugs 71, of the small tilting plate 70. As clearly shown, the flexible strap 29, extends over said plate 65, as well as the tilting plate 7 O, seated therein, and beneath the outwardly turned end or crosspiece 75, of the plate 72, into a position whereby the slot 30, of said strap, may engage over the locking pin 66, provided on the plate 65.
Secured on the inner surface of the forward end of the plate 72, is a pintle 76, on which is pivotally connected a lever 77, the forward end of which is provided with a circular aperture fitting around an eccentric 7 8, secured on an actuating handle 79, journaled in the casing 3, whereby actuation of said handle, due to said eccentric, acts to slide said plate 72, forwardly or rearwardly, as-the case may be, within the casing. Laid slidably over the platev 72, is another plate 86, provided with forked extensions or arms 81, which extend rearwardly and terminate between the abutments 67, projecting upwardly from the inner plate 65, and that portion of the plate 80, between said forked extensions is beveled as designated by the reference numeral 82, to engage beneath the forward end of the strap 29, whereby the same is slightly elevated away from its locking pin 66. Said plate 80, is also provided with laterally disposed inwardly turned abutments 83, against which the forward ends of the respective compression springs 68 and 69, rest. Also formed on the handle 79, is a transverse bar 84:, against which the forward edge of said plate 80, rests when the parts are in normal position, so that when said handle is rotated, said transverse bar Set, acts to thrust said plate 80, inwardly whereby the beveled edge 82, after a certain amount of travel, may engage beneath the forward end of said strap 29, and furthermore compressing said springs 68 and 69, which act to return the parts to normal when the handle is released. The forward end of said strap 29, is first elevated away from the pin 66, sufficient for the beveled portion 82, of said plate to engage therebeneath due to the fact that the rearward sliding movement transmitted to the plate 72, by movement of the eccentric 78, causes the cross-piece 75, of said plate to thrust said ears or lugs 71, of the small tilting plate 7 O, rearwardly thus causing said plate to tilt outwardly so that the forward end thereof is thrust outwardly against the inner surface of the strap 29, to
elevate the same. A flat cover plate 85, of.
any suitable design or construction is provided for the casing 3, in all of the forms of device illustrated and may be secured there to in any suitable manner or for instance by means of the attaching screws inserted through the apertures 86, in the flanges 4, of the casing by which the device is mounted in place.
The operation is as follows:
Referring first to the form of device illustrated in Figs. 1 to 17, inclusive, the operations of locking and releasing the locking mechanism on the door or window 2, is performed by rotation of the handle 14:. l Vhen the handle is turned to the right into a hori- Zontal position the door mechanism is tightly locked with the door closed and with the flexible strap 29, under tension, while on the other hand when the handle is rotated to the left and into a horizontal position the mechanisms are released and the inner end of the strap 29, is elevated, so that the slot 30, thereof, is disengaged from the locking pin 15, permitting opening of the door and sliding of the. strap rearwardly within the casing 3, of the mechanism. The mechanisms in the position shown in Fi 7 are in neutral position, that is, with the handle 14, upright, and with the parts in such position, the door is loosely locked in its frame,that is, the strap 29, is engaged over the pin 15, but a certain amount of movement of the door is permitted by the travel of the slot 30, of the strap 29, with respect to said pin 15. However, when thehandle is-rotated substantially ninety degrees to the right from' tl e neutral position shown in Fig. 7, to that shown in Fig. 8, the mutilated pinion 20, meshing with the toothed portion 24, of the slide bar 22, moves the same rearwardly in the casing 3, against the compression of the spring 23, causing the lug 25, to ride over the surface of the end of the strap 29, to insure the same being retained -upon the pin 15. Furthermore the eccentric 13, also secured upon the handle, serves, through the connecting rod 10, to draw the slidable bar 5, together with the locking pin 15, secured therein, toward the right or forward end of the casingyrso that the pin 15, is drawn to the end of the slot 30, in said strap thereby tensioning the strap and drawing the door tightly closed in the frame. The relation of the eccentric 13, on the handle 1%, is such that the same swings slightly beyond dead center as the handle is rotated into the horizontal position shown in Fig. 8, so that the tension on the strap 29, serves in itself to retain the parts in locked position. In order to release the mechanism, the locked handle 14, is rotated to the left, whereupon as the eccentric 13, passes dead center, the tension on the strap 29, serves to assist in moving the mechanism to release position aided by the compression of the spring 23, so that the parts move into normal or neutral position, that is, with the handle 14:, upright, as shown in Fig. 7, with the compression on the respective springs 18 and 23, equal. In order to open the door, however, it 18 necessary to disengage the slot 30, of the strap 29, from the pin 15, and for this purpose the handle 14, is rotated to the left or counter-clockwise into a horizontal position, whereby the mutilated pinion 20, meshing with the toothed portion 19, of the slide bar 17, moves said slide bar 17, rearwardly against the compression of the spring 18, whereupon the beveled portion 21, engages beneath the forward end of the strap 29, elevating the same out of engagement with the pin 15, so that the door may be swung outwardly. The strap 29, then slides rearwardly in the casing, and of course, the moment the end of the strap rides over the pin 15, the handle let, may be released, whereupon the spring 18, serves to throw the same again in neutral position. Due to said elongated slot 12, in said connecting lever 10, when said handle 14,;is rotated to the left, the eccentric 13, does not impart movement to the slide plate 5, although the springs lS and 23, may serve to cause a certain amount of rearward moves ment thereof. lVhen the door or window 2, is in open position, of course the end of the strap 29, is withdrawn rearwardly in the casing 3, an amount dependent upon the position of the door or window, and when thesameis-swung 'to closed position, the strap 29, slides inwardly within the casing 3, so that the forward end ofisaid strap strikes the beveled portion of the pin 15, riding upwardly thereover and with continued inward movement of the door or window the slot 30, of said strap engages over the pin 15, and at this time the parts are in the neutral position shown in Fig. 7 The door may then be drawn tightly into closed-position by rotating the handle 14:, to the right in the manner already described thereby tensioning the strap 29, to draw the door tightly closed and retain the same in locked position. In the event that the handle should for some reason be rotated into release position asthe door is swung from open to closed position, the end of the strap 29, will first strike the beveled portion of the locking pin15, riding upwardlv thereover and then strike the beveled portion 21, riding upwardly thereon and slightly thereover so that no hindrance is offered to the closing-of the doors. The handle may then be rotated through neutral and into locking position in the usual manner. If the handle is, for some reason in looking position when the door is swung from open to closed position, the end of the strap 29, will merely strike the edge of the retaining or safety lug 25, thrusting the locking bar 22, forwardly and thus actuating said handle to neutral position, permitting the strap to latch over the pin 15, or the edge of said lug 25, may be beveled permitting the strap to ride thereover.
When the handle let, is swung toward a locking position a double oompressionof the spring 23, is secured owing to the fact that the slide bar 22, is moved rearwardly within the casing 3, and, a small forward movement of the slide plate carrying the pin 15, taking place, one of the abutments 7, on said slide plate against which said spring 23, bears of course moves forwardly toward the abutment on the rearwardly moving plate or bar 22. I
An auXiliarv locking means is afforded for the purpose of locking the door in any posi tion of adjustment, either open or closed, and this is accomplished by turning the head 37, which thrusts the compression screw 36, inwardly to clamp the end of the tubular telescoping member 27, around the inner telescoping rod 32, so that movement of said telescoping members cannot take place thus holding the door in any desired position of adjustment, independent of the strap 29. Adjustment of the strap 29, may be effected by removing the pintle 34, of the hinge connection between the rod 32, and bracket 33, and rotating said rod 32, to thread the inner end thereof on or off the plug 31, to which said strap 29, is secured, the details of construction being clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The pintle 28, of the telescoping member 27, and yoke 26, of the casing 3, is held in position due to the fact that the strap 29, engages through a recessed or cutaway portion thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 29, and said pin 28, of course, rotates the slight amount required during adjusting movements of the parts to accommodate the strap 29, permitting the same to ride easily thereover. Due to the fact that in any position of the door or window 2, either open or closed, the strap 29, is arched a certain amount for the reason that the telescoping members 27 and 32, are not in alinement with the casing 3, a certain stress is exerted upon the different parts of the mechanism causing the same to bear snugly against one another thus obviating rattling thereof.
In the modified form of my device illustTiIt-GCllD. Figs. 18 to 23 inclusive, the operation is identical although the construction is slightly different. In order to lock the mechanism, the handle, in the present in stance denoted by the reference numeral a6, looking at the front of the device, is rotated to the right or clockwise thus causing the mutilated pinion 52, to mesh with the toothed portion 57, of the slide bar 53, propelling the same rearwardly against the compression of the spring 42, and causing the lug 54:, thereon, to ride over the end of the strap 29, to retain the same upon the locking pin 50. Furthermore, the eccentric 45, on said handle 4:6, causes movement of said locking pin 50, forwardly in the slot 30, of said strap, thereby tensioning the strap and acting to draw the door or window tightly closed into the frame. When a release movement of the handle 46, takes place, that is, to the left or counter-clock wise, looking at the front of the device, the toothed portion 57, of the slide bar 53, being disengaged from the mutilated pinion 56, the spring 42, returns said bar 53, forwardly tonormal position, and the mutilated pinion 52, engages the toothed portion 51, of the slide bar 47, moving the same rearwardly so that the beveled portion 49, thereof, en-
gages beneath the forward end of the strap 29, elevating the same from the locking pin 50, so that the strap may be withdrawn from the pin. It is immaterial what the position of the actuating handle is, either release or locked position for the reason that in any instance as the end of the strap 29, moves inwardly within the casing on the door, it either rides over the beveled portion 49, if the mechanisms are in release position, or, i the same are in locking position, the end of the strap strikes the edge of the lug 54, thrusting the parts into neutral position unless the edge of the lug is beveled whereupon 'the strap will ride thereover.
Ihave shown a slightly different form for locking the door in any adjusted position in the present modification by use of a bracket 59, in which is mounted a compression screw 61, which, when inserted inwardly, bears directly against the strap 29, to resist movement thereof in the casing3. Of course, when a locking operation takes place not only is the slide bar 53, moved rearwardly but the eccentric 45, serves to draw the slide plate 38, on which the locking pin 50, is mounted forwardly to tension the strap 29.
In the modified form of device illustrated in Figs. 2a to 28 inclusive, I haveshown a group of slide plates, three in number, one disposed above the other, the inner plate 65, havin mounted slidably thereon another plate '12, capable of actuating a tilting plate 70, which is mounted in a recess in said inner plate 65, and above the slidable plate 72, is a fork-shaped plate 80. When the handle, denoted in the present instance by the reference numeral 79, is rotated counter-clockwise or to the left toward a locking position, the eccentric 78, thereon, draws the intermediate slide plate 72, forwardly in the casing 3, whereby the ab'ntments 7 4:, thereon, contacting the abutments 67, of the inner most slide plate 65, thrusts the same forwardly and the locking pin '66, therewith to tension the strap 29, which is engaged thereover. Such movement of the parts is, of course, resisted by both of the compression springs 68 and 69, respectively, due to the fact that the forked plate 80, is thrust rearwardly as the plates 65 and 72, are moved forwardly, owing to the fact that the transverse bar 84, on the handle bears against the forward edge of said plate 80, to actuate the same rearwardlywhen the handle is actuated in either direction.
hen a release movement takes place, the handle 79, is rotated to the right or clockwise, whereby the eccentric 78, thrusts the plate 72, rearwardly and the cross-bar 75, thereon bearing upon the ears 71, of the tilting plate 70, seated in a recess in the slide plate 65, is tilted so that the forward edge of said plate 70, is thrust upwardly beneath the strap 29, tending to elevate the end thereof out of engagement with the locking pin '66, and the rearward movement of the forked plate 80, also taking place, the beveled portion 82, of said latter plate beneath the forward end of the strap 29, which has been slightly raised by the tilting eled edge 82-, thereof.

When a release movement of the handle 79, takes place, that is, a movement toward the right, of course, the eccentric '78, moves the slide bar 72, and plate 65, a slight amount rearwardly in the casing 23, but the transverse bar 8%, on said handle causes a greater rearward movement of the plate 80, thereby compressing the springs 68 and 69, respectively, to resist m vement of the handle and acting to return the same to neutral or normal position when the same i released In this construction as well as in the other two described, the door may be swung from open to closed position regardless of the position of the actuating handle for the reason that in any instance, if the handle is not in neutral position, that is, with the plate 80, thrust rearwardly, the advancing forward end of the strap 29, will ride over the bev- Another important characteristic of the latter form of construction is its reversibility for use either on a right or left hand door. in oroer to permit use of this device such as shown in Figs. 2ato 28 inclusive, on a left hand door instead of the right hand arrangement shown, the handle Y9, and link or lever 77, are taken out and replaced with the handle in inverted position, that is, extending downwardly, so that when the casing 3, is turned over and attached in place, the handle will be upright in neutral position as before. in all of the types described the mechanisms are particularly well adapted for motor car bodies of either open or closed construction inasmuch as operating handles may be placed on either or both sides of the doors.
I am aware that various details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of my invention and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the scope of the claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the class described a casing, a slide plate therein, a flexible resilient strap engaging slidably within said casing, means on said slide plate for engagement with said strap to tension the same, an eccentric for operating said side plate, and means actuated simuianeously with said slide plate in an opposite direction thereto to engage over said strap to positively retain the same engaged on said means on the slide plate.
2. In a device of the class described a casing adapted to be secured upon a door, a resilient strap slidable therein adapted to be secured upon a frame for said door, a slide plate within said casing, locking pin thereon adapted to engage a slot in said strap, means for sliding said plate to tension the strap and draw the door tightly closed and mechanism acting to disengage the strap from said pin to permit the door to be swung into open position.
3. In a lock of the class descri ed the combination with a door and its .rame, of a casing mounted on the door, a flexible strap slidable therein and connected to the frame, a locking pin disposed within said casing adapted to receive the slotted end of the strap engaged thereover, means moving said locking pin to tension the strap and draw the door tightly closed in locked posi tion, and mechanism for positively engag ing the end of said strap to disengage the same from the locking pin to permit the door to be swung into open position causing the strap to slide in aid casing entirely out of engagement with said locking pin. 7
4. In a device of the class described the combination with a doorand its frame,-of a casing secured upon the door and a flexible resilient member connected on the frame, and having sliding engagement in said casing, telescoping members connected tosaid casing and to the door frame through which said flexible member extends, locking means within said casing for engagement with said flexible member adapted to tension the same to draw the door tightly closed in locked position and mechanism for positively engaging said fiexible member to' remove the same from said locking means to permit swinging the door into open position.
5. The combination with a door and its frame, of a locking mechanism mounted on said door, and a flexible strap forming a part thereof, having sliding relation with the door and secured to said frame, locking means on the door to positively engage said strap to lock the door and capable of movement to tension said strap to draw the door tightly in closed position, and mechanism for disengaging said strap from said means to release the door and permit swinging'of the same into open position.
6. In a device of the class described the combination of a door and its frame of flexible resilient means secured upon the frame and having sliding relation with the door, mechanism secured upon the door for positive engagement with said means to tension the same and draw the door tightly closed in the frame, and means operating to disengage said fiexible means from said mechanism without movement of said mechanism to permit said door to swing into open position.
7. In a device of the class described the combination with a door and its frame, of a flexible resilient member connected on the hinge side of the frame and having sliding relation with the door, a locking mechanism on the door adapted to positively engage said member, means acting to operate said mechanism to tension said flexible member and draw the door tightly closed in the Fame, and other mechanism acting posi tively to disengage said flexible member trom said locking mechanism to permit withdrawal of said He -le i ember to release the door and permit the same to be swung into open position.
8. In a device of the class described the combination with a door and its frame, of a member connected on the frame and having sliding engagement with a door, mechanism mounted on the door for partial engagement witi said member to tension the same and draw the door tightly closed in locked position in the frame, means operating to retain said member positively engaged with said mechanism as the same moves into locked position, and a releasing device acting to positively disengage said member from said mechanism to permit the door to be swung into open position.
9. In a device of the class described the combination with a door and its frame, of means secured on the hinge side of the frame, a casing mounted on the door through which said means slidably extends, locking mechanism mounted within said easing adapted to positively engage said means to tension the same and draw the door tightly closed in locked position, a retaining device adapted to engage over said means when the mechanism is operated into locking position positively retaining said means engaged thereon, and means operating to disengage said means iirom said mechanism to release the door and permit the same to be swung into open position.
10. In a device of the class described a casin a member having slidable engagement therewith, mechanism within said easing to interlock with said member comprising a slidable bar, a pin thereon adapted to engage through a slot in said member, an eccentric for operating said slide bar, gear operated means to engage over said member when the same is engaged on said pin and the parts are moved to locking position to retain said member positively engaged on said pin, and a disengaging means for said member to elevate the same away from said pin when it is desired to release said device.
11. In a device of the class described a casing, a member adapted to be locked therein having sliding engagement therewith, mechanism within said casing for locking said member therein comprising a slide bar, a pin thereon adapted to engage a slot in said member, eccentrically operated means for moving said slide bar to draw the pin tightly into engagement with said member, means operating simultaneously therewith to engage over said member to retain the same retained on the pin, and means for disengaging said member from said pin adapted to engage beneath the'end of said member to positively elevate the same from said pin.
12. A device of the class described comprising a casing, a flexible member slidably engaging the same, a slide bar within said casing, a pin thereon adapted to engage a slot in said member means operating said slide bar to draw the same in a direction to tension said member by engagement with said pin, means operating simultaneously to engage over said member to retain the same engaged on said pin, and gear operated means adapted to be projected beneath the end of said member to elevate the same out of engagement with said pin when it is desired to release the device' 13. In a de'ice of the class described a casing, a flexible member having sliding engagement therewith, a slide bar within said casing, a pin thereon adapted to engage the slot in said flexible member, means operating said slide bar to tension said flexible member when the same is engaged with said pin, gear operated means to engage over said flexible member to retain the same positively engaged on said pin, gear operated means adapted to be projected beneath the end of said member to disengage the same from said pin when the device is moved into release position, and compression springs adapted to resist movement of said respective gear operated means and acting to re turn the parts to normal position when released.
14. In a device of the class described a casing, a flexible member slidably engagtherewith, eccentrically operated means adapted to tension said flexible member, means to disengage said flexible member from said mechanism, means also acting to engage over said flexible member to retain the same engaged with said mechanism, and resilient means to resist movement of the parts from neutral position.
15. In a device of the class described a casing, a flexible element engaging therein, a slide bar mounted within said casing, a pin thereon adapted to engage in a slot in said flexible member, eccentric means for operatin said slide bar, means adapted to engage over said flexible member to retain the same positively engaged with said pin and operated simultaneously with said eccentric, means adapted to engage beneath the end of said flexible member to disengage the same from said pin and operated simultaneously with said eccentric, and resilient springs adapted to oppose engagement of said respective means to return the parts of the device to neutral position when released.
16. In a device of the class described, a casing, a member slidably engaged therein,
mechanism in the casing adapted to engage and tension said member, and means for shifting the member out of engagement with said tensioning mechanism.
17. In a device of the class described the combination with a door and its frame, of means connected to said frame, spring controlled toothed mechanism mounted on said door, and members thereon adapted to engage said means to lock or unlock the device.
18. In a device of the class described, toothed mechanism, an eccentric simultaneously operatable therewith and adjustable means slidable within said device adapted to be actuated by said eccentric and engaged by said mechanism to lock or unlock the device.
19. In a device of the class described the combination of a door and its frame, of an eccentric toothed mechanism on said door, adjustable resilient means connected to said frame movably engaged in said mechanism adapted to draw the door into a closed locked position, and means associated with said resilient means adapted to hold the door in an adjusted open position.
20. In a device of the class described, co-acting sliding elements adapted to interlock, mechanism for tensioning said elements in their interlocked position, and means for clamping the elements together in the interlocked position.
21. In a device of the class described, co-acting sliding elements adapted to interlock, mechanism for tensioning said elements in their interlocked position, means for clamping the elements together in the interlocked position, means for releasing said clamping means, and means for spreading said interlocking elements to disengage.
22. A door locking device comprising interlocking members adapted to automatically interlock as the door is swung shut, a mechanism for tensioning the same, a mechanism for holding said elements interlocked, and a mechanism for disengaging the elements one from the other to permit the door being swung open.
