To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DUDLEY S. SEYMOUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak Park, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a' description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in sewing machines, and more particularly to a sewing machine wherein a trimming mechanism operates in advance of the stitching mechanism and devices cause cross threads to overlie and join the edges of the fabric on the upper face of the material. A
An object of the invention is to provide an operating mechanism of the above character wherein the trimming mechanism and certain of the cross thread manipulating devices may be operated by the same actuating member on the main shaft, which actuating member is separate and independent from the actuating member for' the needle or needles so that the load on the main shaft may be more evenly distributed.
A further object of theinvention is to provide a mechanism of the above character wherein the cross thread manipulating devices include cooperating members, with an actuating member on the main shaft and devices operated thereby for vibrating the movable trimming member and one of the 'members of the cross thread manipulating devices, and a separate and independent actuating member on the main shaft and devices operated thereby for vibrating the needle bar and the other of the members of y the cross thread manipulating devices.

The invention consists generally in asewing' machine having a work support and an overhanging arln which supports a needle bar carrying a needle or needles which re ciprocates at the free end of the work support. Trimmingblades are located in front of the needle or needles, and these trimming blades are disposed in a horizontal plane, and one of said blades is movable for trimming the u'p-turned edges of the fabric preparatory to abutting or slightly overlappingthe same and joining the edges. C0- operating with the needles is a cross thread manipulating mechanism which lays cross threads across the meeting edges of the fabric, and this cross thread laying mechanism preferably includes a thread guide and a cooperating thread hook.

for oscillating the thread hooks back and forth across the line of feed. There is a second independent eccentric on the main shaft and devices operated thereby for vibrating the movable trimming member and also for oscillating the thread guides back and forth in a direction substantially parallel to the line of feed.
It is well-known that the greater part of the load on the operating shaft comes from the operating of the needles which are caused to penetrate the fabric and from the operating of the trimming blades which sever the fabric. above described, I am able to distribute this load more evenly on the main shaft and thus reduce to a minimum the vibrating strain on the machine.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, I have shown my invention as applied to a sewing machine having a standard 1 carrying an overhanging arm 2 in the free end of which is mounted a needle bar 3 carrying, as hereiirshown, four needles 4. The needle ba'r3 is vibrated by a needle lever 5 which is connected to the needle bar by a link 6. Mounted in the standard 1 is the main operating shaft 7 which is actuated by the usual belt wheel 8. Located on the main shaft 7 is, an eccentric with which an eccentric strap 9 cooperates, and this eccentric strap is connected at its upper end with the needle lever 5.
Extending outwardly from the standard 1 is an arm 10 which carries a horizontally projecting portion 11. At the free end of this horizontally projecting portion 11 is a vertically depending section 12 at the lower end of which is mounted a work supporting arm proper 13. The arm 10 projects toward the operator, while the section 11 is substantially parallel with the overhangin arm. The work supporting arm 13, therefore, is located so that its free end is underneath the free end of the overhanging arm 2, and the material to be stitched may be placed around said work supporting arm 13, the edges oined to form a tube, and the stitched tube fed off from the free end of the arm. Said work supporting arm is provided with the usual feeding mechanism which is 0perated from a train of devices extending through the sections 10, 11. and 12, and this train of devices is actuated by the main shaft 7. As shown in the drawings, the four needles are arranged in two pairs, one in advance of the other, and a looper cooperates with each pair of needles. These loopers are located in the work supporting arm 13 and are likewise actuated by a train of mechanism operating from the main shaft 7.

a supporting yoke 21 (see Fig. 7 This supporting yoke is mounted on the presser bar 16 so asto turn freely thereon. Said yoke is forced downwardly relative to the bar 16 by a spring 22 which rests on the upper end of the yoke and engages a collar 23 which is fixed to the presser bar 16. The arm 20 is formed with a split collar engages a projecting sleeve 25 formed integral with the yoke, and this split collar is clamped to the sleeve by a clamping bolt 26. A link 27 is pivoted at one end to a ball stud 24' which 28 fixed to the arm 20. The other end of this herein shown, include thread guides 3. one
foreach pair of needles, and thread hooks 37 whlch cooperate with the respective thread guides and the respective'pairs of needles.
The thread guides 36 are fixed to a swinging arm 38 which is mounted on a supporting pivot bolt 39 carried by a suitable bracket attached to the overhangingarmtsee Fig. A'link 40 is pivotally connected at one end to this arm 38, and at its other end said link is pivoted at 41 to the arm 29. As the arm 29 oscillates, it will in turn oscillate the arm 38 carrying the thread guides so as to move the thread guides back and forth in a direction substantially parallel with the line of feed.
The thread hooks 37 are fixed to an arm 42, which is pivoted to swing about a vertical axis at 43. Fixed to the arm 42 is a second arm 44 which carries a ball stud on its outer end. A link 45 is connected at one end to this ball stud, and the other end of this link is connected to a depending arm 46. The arm 46 is clamped to a sleeve 48 which is mounted to oscillate freely ,on the shaft 30. Said sleeve is preferably made in two sections. Said sections are provided 'respectively with arms 49 and 50 which may be connected by a pin 51 or disconnected from each other at the will of the operator.
From the above description, it will be apparent that I have devised a construction wherein a single actuating eccentric on the main shaft 7 through the eccentric rod or strap 35, the shaft 30, the depending arm 29, and the links 27 and 40, respectively, vibrate the trimming blade and also the thread guiding hooks. I have likewise devised a construction wherein a single eccentric on the main shaft operating through the eccentric rod or strap 9 vibrates the needle lever, and this needle lever in turn reciprocates the needles and vibrates the tl read laying fingers. The strain incident to the puncturing of the material by the needles is carried by one eccentric, while the strain incident to the severing of the fabric sections is carried by another eccentric. Not only are these heavy strains of the machine distributed on the two independent eccentrics, but all the other active mechanism above the work support is likewise actuated from these two eccentrics and distributed substantially equally on the two eccentrics, as the thread guides are vibrated from one eccentric and the thread hooks from the other.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A sewing machine including in combination, a standard, a main shaft located in said standard. an overhanging arm carried by the standard, a needle bar reciprocating in said arm, a trimming mechanism including trimming members operating onthe fabric in advance of the needles, and an actuating member on the main shaft, and devices operated thereby for actuatlng the trimming member, a second actuating memher on the main shaft, and devices operated thereby for actuating the needle bar, cross thread laying mechanism cooperating with the needles and including a thread guide and a thread hook, devices for actuating the thread hook from one of said actuating members on the main shaft, and devices for vibrating the thread guide from the other actuating member on the main shaft.

A sewing machine including in combination, a standard, a main shaft located in said standard, an overhanging armcarried by said standard, a needle bar located at the free end of said overhanging arm, a pluralityof needles car ied thereby, a work supporting arm carried by 'saidhstandardand having a free end extending underneath the free end of the overhanging arm, a trimming mechanism including trimming members operating on the fabric in advance of the needles, an actuating member onthe main shaft, and devices operated thereby for actuating the trimming memher, a second actuating member on the main shaft, and devices operated thereby for actuating the needle bar, cross thread laying mechanism cooperating with the needles above the work supporting arm and including a thread guide and a thread hook, devices for actuating the thread hook from the actuating member for vibrating the needle bar, and devices for vibrating the thread guide from the actuating member for the trimming members.

A sewing machine including in combination, a standard, an overhanging arm carried thereby, a needle bar mounted in the overhanging arm, needles carried by said needle bar, a main shaft located in the standard, a shaft mounted on the overhanging arm and extending lengthwise thereof, means for positively actuating said lastnamed shaft from the main shaft, a trimming mechanism including a horizontally movable trimming blade operating on the fabric in front of the needles, a depending arm carried by the shaft on the overhanging arm, and a link pivotally connecting said depending arm and the movable trimming blade.

A sewing machine including in combination, a standard, an overhanging arm carried thereby, a Work supporting arm having its free end extending underneath the overhanging arm, a needle bar mounted at the end of the overhanging arm, needles carried thereby, a pressei' foot, a presser bar supporting said presser foot, a trimming on the overhanging arm and extending lengthwise thereof, a depending arm carried by said shatt, a llnk connecting, said depending arm With the arm on the yoke sup- 7 porting trimming member, and means for positively oscillating said shaft on the overhanging arm from the main shaft.
