CARD-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 13, 1917.
Application filed March 3, 1917. Serial No. ;,341.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD MICHELL, a citizen of the United States, residin at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and tate of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to improve upon the construction of the card holder shown and described in my U. S. Patent 1,184,196 issued May 23, 1916. It has been found that when using the patented device, it is possible for a player to withdraw two cards instead of one and the improvements therefore reside in a cover for the stack of cards so constructed as to permit only one of these cards to be withdrawn at a time.
With the foregoing object in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawing which constitutes a part of this application and in which:
I Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved card holder;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof showing a card partly withdrawn from the improved holder; and
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the card cover.
, In the drawing above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates a card support rotatably mounted on a suitable pedestal 2, said support including a receptacle 3 for discards and to be used in playing a game such as rummy, stud poker and sixty-six, in which games the players successively draw a card from the deck after the proper number of cards have been dealt and discarded. The holder 4 is open at its top and at one end to permit the cards to be easily deposited therein and to permit said cards to be drawn one at a time only, a cover 5 is provided for the holder.
The cover 5 is in the form of a fiat plate resting upon the stack of cards in the holder 4 and having at its inner corners a pair of ears 6 received slidably in vertical grooves 7 in the inner faces of both sides of the another holder 4 for the cardsholder, the function of said ears being to prevent withdrawal of the cover through the open front end of the holder. The outer end-of the plate 5 is bent downwardly to form a guard 8 extending over the outer ends of the cardsv and forming a closure for the open front end of the holder 4, the adacent edges of the body of said plate and said guard being formed respectively with a finger opening 9 and a tongue 10, the latter being formed by notching the guard at 11.
The upper edge of tongue 10 is spaced sufficiently below the lower side of the plate body to permit only one card at a time to be withdrawn, the withdrawal operation being performed by pushing downwardly on the guard 8 with the thumb, resting the second finger on the top card where exposed through the opening 9 and then drawing this finger outwardly. It is not absolutely essential that the thumb be placed on the guard but by exerting a slight downward pressure on this part, insurance is given that the device will be properly positioned for permitting easy withdrawal of the top card.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be observed that although the improved device is of simple and inexpensive nature, it will effectively carry out the object of the invention, that is, prevent more than one card being withdrawn from the stack at a single operation. This result is probably obtained best by the particular construction shown and described and I therefore consider this the preferred form of the device. It is to be understood, however, that within the scope of the invention as claimed numerous changes may be made without sacrificing the principal advantages.
I claim:
, 1. The combination with a playing card holder having an open top and an open end, of a cover fitting slidably in said holder and having means for permitting only one card at a time to be withdrawn therefrom.
2. The combination with a playing card holder having an open top and an open end, of a'cover plate resting slidably in said holder, and a guard depending from the outer end of said plate and extending across the open end of said, holder, said end of the plate having a finger opening and said guard having'means spaced below the lower side of said plate a distance sufiicient to permit the withdrawal of one card.
3. The combination with a playing card holder having an open top and an open end, of a cover plate resting slidably in said holder, and a guard depending from the outer end of said plate and extending across the open end of said holder, said end of the plate having a finger opening, said guard having a tongue adjacent the openiend of said finger opening and spaced a sufficient distance below the lower side of the cover plate to permit the withdrawal of one card.
4. The combination with a playing card holder having an open upper side and an open outer end and provided with vertical grooves in its parallel sides, of a cover plate fitting slidably into said holder, means carried by the outer end of saidplate for permitting only one card at a time to be Withdrawn from the holder, and outwardly projecting lugs on the inner end of said plate received slidably in said grooves.
5. The combination with a playing card holder having an open upper side and an open outer end and provided with vertical grooves in its parallel sides, received slidably in said holder, a guard depending from the outer end extending across the open end of the holder, said guard and plate coiiperating at their juncture to permit only one card at a time to be withdrawn from said holder, and outwardly projecting lugs on the inner end of said plate received slidably in the aforesaid grooves to prevent forward withdrawal of said plate.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
