Description
H. ENGLAND TROLLING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 13. 19I6.
Patented Nov. 13, 1917.
HENRY ENGLAND, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TROLLING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 13, 1917.
Application filed June 13, 1916. Serial No. 103,490;
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HENRY ENGLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates an improved trolling device and has as its primary object to provide a tackle employing a stand supporting guide lines to extend therefrom out into the water with the said lines slidably receiving weighted carriers for directing the hooked trolling lines over the course of the guide lines.
The invention has as a further object to provide an improved and efiicient form of stand for the purpose indicated and wherein the said stand may be readily attached to a wharf, boat, or other object to support the guide lines.
And a still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be simple in construction and may be easily operated.
Other and incidental objects will appear as the description proceeds and in the drawings wherein I have illustrated the preferred form of the invention and wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of my improved trolling device, particularly showing the mounting of the trolling stand and the arrangement of the guide lines thereon,
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view more particularly showing the construction of the base of the stand, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view showing a slightly modified form of stand.
In carrying out the invention, I employ a stand which includes a base 10. This base may be formed of metal, wood, or any other suitable material and is bifurcated to provide upwardly divergent hollow sockets 1].. Threaded into the bottom of the stand is a screw or other approved fastening device 12 Threaded through the slots 14, are guide lines or cables 15. These cables are arranged to extend out into the water and at their outer ends, are preferably provided with weights or anchors 16while the inner ends of said cables are detachably secured to screw eyes or other suitable fastening devices 17 arranged in the rear of the post 13 and secured to the boat or wharf upon which the stand is mounted. In this connection, it will be observed that the portions of the cables extending from the upper extremities of the post to the said screw eyes, provide guys for the stand. However, to further brace the stand, I preferably employ guys 18 which, at their upper extremities, are connected to screw eyes or other suitable fastening devices 19 attached to the rear sides of the post each at a point substantially midway the ends of the said post respectively with the lower extremities of said guys connected to similar fastening devices 20 arranged in the rear of the stand.
Slidably mounted upon the guide cables 15 are weighted carriers 21 connected to the said cables by a plurality of rings or other suitable means 22. Detachably connected to the carriers 21 are trolling lines 23 to the outer extremities of which are suitably connected a plurality of hooks 24: of approved type. The inner extremities of the trolling lines 23 are freely threaded through the slots 14 in the posts 13 which thus provide guides for the said trolling lines. As will now be clear, the trolling lines 23 may be fed out when the carriers 21 will draw the said lines outwardly into the water over the course of the guide cables 15. The movement of the hooks 24 through the water will, of course, attract the fish as in ordinary trolling and upon effecting a catch, the trolling lines may then again be Wound up or drawn in so that the fish may be removed from the hooks. 7
It will therefore be seen that I provide a very simple and efficient construction for the purpose set forth and a device which may be readily erected and used in substantially any convenient location.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings, I have illustrated a slight modification which relates more particularly to the construction of stand used. In this modification, I employ a base 25 which is formed with but a single socket 26 adapted to removably receive one of the posts 13. The base 25 is provided with an attaching screw 27, similar to the screw 12 of the preferred form of the invention so'that the stand may be easily erected. This modification provides a convenient arrangement Where it is desired to use but a single trolling line and since this line is mounted and operated in the manner previously described, further description, in this connection, is deemed unnecessary.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A device of the character described including a stand having an upstanding post provided at its upper extremity With a slot, a guide cable trained tl'irough said slot and secured in the rear of the post to form a guy therefor, a carrier mounted to traverse the said cable, and a trolling line connected to the said carrier and slidably received With- 20 in the said slot to be guided by the post.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
HENRY ENGLAND. a s.]
