direction toward the lett, the adjacent pairs 2. In a hauling apparatus of the character of clamping plates will be drawn toiva 1d each other to firmly grip the havvser therebetween. W-hen the pull is released the clamping action will of course also be relieved and the plates tend to separa-te, hus permitting the entire clamping device to be moved bodily toward the right. The plates 12 are provided with additional lugs or guard lugs 17, as shown in Fig. il, to prevent accidental displacement of the hauling cables.
The method of 'use and operation of a device of this character is substantially as follows:
The haw/ser 5, as shown in Fig. 3, is assumed to have its right-hand end attached to the object to be moved, with the left-hand end line free. The clamping devices are attached thereto by removing the bolts 13, as
may be necessary, after which the bolts arel put in place and the nuts screwed on to the desired amount but insuliicient to exert a clamping action upon the hawser. The hauling cables 8, after being given a turn around the havvser are Woven back and forth through the lugs 16, as shown in Fig. l, and the ends attached to the Winding drums, or other source of power 10. On rotating the drums a pull Will be exerted upon the several hauling cables which causes the plates 12 to clamp' upon the haivser and transmit the pull thereto. After taking in a certain amount drums may be released, the hauling cables loosened, and the. clamping device slid along the haivser 5 to talre a fresh bite thereon. Thisioperation is repeated from time to time until the desired result is accomplished.
It is thus seen that the present invention provides a simple and practical hauling apparatus adapted to accomplish, among others, all of the objects and advantages above set forth. It will also be seen that the apparatus can be employed to exert a pulling or hauling action on rope or Wire cables or upon metal bars.
I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of construction and arrangement of parts Without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not intend to limit myselfY to the specific form shown and described.
Having thus described my invention what IV claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: Y
- 1.` In a. hauling apparatus of the characdescribed Vin combination, a plurality of pairs of curved clamping plates mounted upon opposite sides of a haWser, bolts loosely connecting and holding said plates in posi'- tion and hauling ropes ivovenly connected With said plates and passing around the havvser adapted to cause a clamping action of. the pla-tes upon the hawser when a pull is exerted upon said hauling ropes.
3. In a hauling apparatus of the character described in combination, a pair of clamping plates adapted to engage opposite sides of a haivser, a hauling rope connected directly with the hawser and said plates adapted to cause said plates to cla-mp the haivser when said hauling` ropes are pulled.
4v. In a hauling apparatus of the character described in combination, a pair of curved plates engaging opposite sides of a hafivser, lugs at the sides of said plates, hauling ropes secured to the havvser and passing over said lugs in a manner to cause said plates to move toward each other When said hauling ropes are pulled. y
5. In a hauling apparatus of the character described in combi-nation, a pair of curved plates engagino oppositer sides of a. haivser, lugs at the sides of said plates, hauling ropes secured to the haWser and passing over said lugs in a manner to causesaid plates to move toward each other When said hauling ropes are pulled, and bolts connecting said plates at opposite sides of. the haivser adapted to prevent removal thereof.
6.. In a. hauling apparatus of the character described `in combination, a plurality of curved plates having securing lugs attheir ends, bolts passing freely through said lugs adapted to hold the plates in normal position, ears at each side of the lugs, and hauling ropes Woven through said ears adapted to exert a clamping action of said plates upon the hawser when said ropes are pulled.
7. In ahauling apparatus of the character described in combination, a plurality of Curved plates having securing lugs at their ends, bolts passing freely through said lugs adapted to hold theY plates in normal position, ears at each side of the lugs, and hauling ropes Woven throughrsaid ears adapted to exert ka clamping actionV of said plates upon the haivser when said ropes are pulled, the inner surfacesol= said. plates being provided with a Yrougzghened surface to prevent slipping of the plates along saidrope.l
'- 8. In a haulingnapparatus of the ,character jdescribed,a plurality of pairs of platesk adapted to enzgfagev oppositesides of a laawser,v
eachpiate havinga central perforated ear at 4each end, fastening meanseonnecting saidV f ears at opposite sides of the hawser copreventr removal of thefpiatesyhooks at each.
y Copies of thispatent may be obtained for liaWser arld Woven -fhrougii vsaid.attachil'xg v .hooks in a manner to cause said plates -to move toward each .n otherV and yclamp the hawser when the pull is exerted thereon.l .157
