Description

vR. L. OMENSETTER.
Railroad Car Ventiiator.
N0. 124,613.' Patented March2,i872.
FIG
bnrrnn sTATEs PATENT @Enron ROBERT L. OMENSETTER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAILROAD CAR VENTILATORS.
Specification describing' certain Improvements in Gar-Ventilators, invented by ROBERT L. OMENSETTER, of the city of' Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania.
' pivots in such a manner, that the forward motion of the car causes them to come into the right position to turn the current of air below the car that would otherwise rush up the iiues, as hereinafter described.
Figure l is an inside view of a portion of a car, showing a window,.A, and side panels B B on my improved plan. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, at the line x x of Fig.' l. Fig. 3 is a like view, at the line y y of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is an isometrical view of one of the valves F.
Like letters ,in all the figures indicate the same parts.
There are vertical ventilatingues G at each side of the windows open at bottom, which communicate with the interior of the car at their upper ends bymeans of openings H. The
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,613, dated March 12, 1872.
forward motion of the car creates a current of air to the rear of the same, and passing` under the iues by its suction tends to form a vacuum in each flue, thereby causing an inowing of air so as to keep up a circulation. To makc the downward current more complete, the air is prevented rushing into the bottom oi' the said side iiues by-means of the valves F. These valves swing freely on the pivots a, so that the current of air striking against the lower end turns the valve when the car is moving in the direction indicated bythe arrows, into the position represented in Fig. l, thereby closing that portion of the iiues in front of the valves and deiiecting it downwards, and thus preventing it rushing in the rear of the same up the nues.l The openings H may be provided with registers for regulating the draught through the iiues Gr.
I claim as my invention- The combination and arrangement of the pivoted valves F with the lower ends of the 'fines G', for deiiecting the currents of air as they pass beneath the same, so as to prevent the air from passing up the iiues, as specified.
ROBERT L. OMENSETTER.
