CONTINUOUS MIXER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 29, 1917. Serial No. 158,222.
peditiously, thoroughl and comparatively inexpensively mixing uids or semi-fluids of which grease, aint, soap, and an emulsion of asphalt and soap, miscible in water, are examples.
The invention will be claimed at the end hereof, but will be first described in connection with the embodiment chosen from other embodiments of it, for illustration in the accompanyin drawings in which Figure 1,is an e evational View, principally in central section, of a continuous mixer embodying features of the invention.
Figs. 2 and 3, are respectiv ely a longitudinal section and an end view, drawn to an enlarged scale, of the mixing nozzle shown in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4, is a transverse sectional view of the casing shown in Fig. 1.
In the drawings 1, is a closed casing having an outlet 2, at or near one end thereof.
3, is a choke-plate arranged in the casing and having through it a restricted passa e I 4. 5, is a mixing nozzle arranged in t e casing and provided with restricted passages and with inlets 7, connecting these passages 6, with a manifold 8. 9, is a me-' chanical conveyer arranged in the casing and having its spiral flights 10, and driving means 11, arranged and operated to feed away from the outlet 2. 12, are baflles arranged on the inner wall of the casing. 13, 14 and 15, are pressure fluid feeds having spaced communication with the casing 1.
16, are pumps driven from the conveyor.
shaft b gearing 17, and adapted to su ly pressurl; for the feed. I have descr iged the particular embodiment of the machine shown in the drawings, but it must be understood that in some cases certain of the described parts may be omitted or duplicated according to the number and character of the materials to be mixed.
For the sake of a further description of the invention I will describe the operation of the machine in connection with an emuls1on of asphalt and soap miscible in water, but in so doing I do not intend to limit the machine to that use, or in any way other than as the appended claims may require.
Asphalt is introduced at 14:, soap at 13, and water at. 7 and 15, under the pressure of the umps 16, and in such manner that the casmg 1, is kept full and the operation is continuous. The fluid or pump feed operates in opposition to the mechanical conveyer 9, and in opposition to the choke plate 3, and the mixing nozzle 5, and the product thoroughly mixed is delivered continuously at 2. .The choke plate 3, when present, not only promotes the mixing operation, but also insures the mixture of asphalt, at first, with comparatively little soap and thereafter with more asphalt. The function of the mixing nozzle 5, when present, is to thoroughly and intimately mix water with the previously mixed asphalt and soap.
Obviously modifications may be made in details of construction and arrangement and hence the invention is not limited to those 7 matters or in any way other than the rior Patented Nov. 6, 1917.-
the same to the outlet against the opposition of the mechanical conveyer.
2. A continuous mixer comprising the combination of a closed casing havin an outlet at or near one end thereof, a c oke plate in the casing, a mechanical conveyer 1n the casing arranged to feed away from the outlet, and a pressure fluid feed communicatin with the casing for keeping the easing fulfof fluid and feeding the same to the outlet against the opposition of the mechanical conveyer and of the choke plate.
3. A continuous mixer comprising the combination of a closed casing having an outlet at or near one end thereof, a mixing nozzle in the casing, a mechanical conveyer in the casing arranged to feed away from the outlet, and a pressure fluid feed communicating with the casing for keeping the casing full of fluid and feeding the same to the outlet against the opposition of the mechanical conveyer and of the mixing nozzle.
4. A continuous mixer comprising the combination of'a closed casing havin an outlet at or near one end thereof, a c oke plate in the casing, a mixing nozzle in the casing, a mechanical conveyer in the casing arranged to feed away from the outlet, and a pressure fluid feed. communicating with the casin for keeping the casing full of fluid and eeding the same to the outlet against the opposition of the mechanical conveyer and 1of the choke plate and of the mixing nozz e.
5. A continuous mixer comprising the combination of a closedcasing having an outlet at or near one end thereof, a mechanical conveyer in the casing arranged to feed away from the outlet, and pressure fluid feeds having spaced communication with the casing for keeping the casing full of fluid and feeding the same to the outlet against the opposition of the mechanical conveyer.
6. A continuousgmixer comprising the combination of a closed casing having an outlet, and means for feeding fluids under pressure into the casing, the relation of the feeding means and the outlet being such .that the casing is kept full, and devices for emulsifying the fluid while under'pressure in the casing.
