IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-BRAKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,581, dated March 12, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. WILEY JAcoBs, of
' J efl'ersonville,in the county of Clark and State cation.
This invention relates to brake-wheels provided distinct from the running-wheels on the same axle therewith; and it consists in a novel construction of such brakewheels whereby their rims or peripheries against which the brake-shoes operate may be easily removed when worn out. y
In the accompanying drawing, Figure '1 is a plan of a portion of a car-truck or floor-frame having my brake applied. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same taken through the axle-boxes and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section thereof.

A A are two hubs, which are keyed on the axle B of the wheels 0 O, and have formed on their outer edges flanges a a. Each of these hubs is furnished with a pair of semicircular plates, D D, having formed on their outer sides flanges b b that are bolted to the inner sides of the flanges a a 011 the hubs A, and having on their adjacentor meeting edges lugs c 0, through which bol ts j j pass for the purpose of securing them together and clamping them on the hub A. The said hub with its pair of flanged plates forms a solid friction-wheel or drum, against the periphery of which brake-shoes may act instead of 011 the running-wheels C O. E E are brake-shoes, two for each wheel. The two shoes operating on the corresponding sides of a pair of wheels are bolted to one of two bars, F F, and are suspended by links d d from cross-beams e e forming part of .the frame of the car or truck in such manner that when free they will hang away from the friction-drums D 1). The shoes E E are of the usual form, and have secured to their faces, by the same bolts which secure them to the bars F F, wooden linings ff. Each of these bars F F has rigidly secured to it a rod or arm, G, that is pivoted at the end to a lever, H, one of said arms being pivoted to the end of the lever and the other a short distance from it. The lever H has pivoted to its other end a rod, J which is connected by a chain with an ordinary winding-spindle.
To operate the brake the rod J is drawn forward and thereby actuates the lever H so as to draw the bars F F toward each other and cause the shoes to clamp the friction-drums D D. By having the shoes clamp the drums instead of the wheels 0 O the latter are relieved from much wear and the danger of slipping brakes is obviated, as it is hardly possible for the drums to get wet, and by making and at taching the drums in the manner described I provide for the renewal of those parts worn by the brake.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The brake-wheels or drums composed each of a flanged hub, A, rigidly secured to the axle B, and the semicircular flanged rimplates bolted thereto, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
