LOAD-BINDING DEVICE.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH S. MAXWELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Detroit, county of Wayne,
'State of Michigan, have invented a new and ing normally in position to permit the load` ing of said truck, and including power driven means for placing the device in binding position on the load, said means being connected with the propeller shaft of the truck and adapted for operation when the truck is in motion. A device of this character eliminates the lost time usually consumed by the ordinary hand operatedload binders, and greatly increases the efficiency of auto-truck hauling.
The details of my invention are fully shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a transverse, vertical section through the body of an auto truck, showing my load-binding device installed thereon, and in normal position before operation;
Fig. 2 is a larger-scaled sectional detail of the hydraulic jack and adjacent parts;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmental horizontal section of the binding frame taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. l; and
Fig. 4 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the parts shown in Fig. 25; this view is taken approximately on the line M of Fig. 3. Q
o, a, represent the longitudinal chassis beams of an auto truck, and o is the propeller shaft. Load carrying beams o are rigidly mounted transversely on the chassis beams, a, and are adapted to support the load d. Said beams are made with a longitudinal T slot guideway c, the web of which is provided with slots f, g. Slide legs i are movably supported in the guideway e, the
o utvvard movement of said legs being limited by a stop-bolt z', bearing in the slots f. Said legs it are further provided with slots j, located in the vertical plane of the slots g. Rigidly mounted on the youter ends of the slide legs h are the upright channelirons Ic, which form the side members of my binding device. The slide legs h and channel-irons 7c are normally held in their ex'- treme outer positions, as shown in Fig. l, by 'the action of expansion coil-springs Z, which bear on rigid guide pins m, and which springs are adapted to be compressed when the channel-irons 7c' are moved inwardly toward the load. Lach channel 7c is further provided with a longitudinal slot n, idler pin o, hole 0 and brackets p.
The top frame member consists of a Vchannel-iron g, the ends r of which are reduced and provided with a centrally located slot s. The ends 71 project through the slots fn, of the channel-irons le, and permit the top frame member to move downwardly relative to the side frame members, at the same time permitting the side frame members to move laterally with respect to the top frame member. The rectangular frame thus formed'by the members o, if; and g may be adjusted so that the sides and top may be caused to bear against the load CZ and bind the latter securely in place on the truck.
Mounted in the top frame member g is a casting t', to which are anchored the corresponding ends of chains u. Each chain extends outwardly along the ltop frame member g, over a roller o, down the side frame member, over the idler pin 0, through the hole 0, slot j, slot g, and thence around a winding drum to, which is rotatably mounted on a shaft w, supported by brackets y beneath the floor of the truck. Each roller o is rotatably mounted in arms 'v' of a slidable bearing o2 (see Figs. 3 and 4), said arms being also provided with lugs o3 which bear against the web of the channel 7c. A tie plate o4 extends beneath the slot s, and an eye-bolt 05, extending through said slot, ties the plate o4 and bearing o2 together. This construction provides a convenient bearing for the roller o, and permits the latter to adjust itself to any adjustment of the frame.
A tension spring e is suspended from an eye-bolt in the upper bracket j? ot each channel-iron ZJ, and has at its lo ver end a sheave z. A cable e2 runs over said sheave and has its ends secured to the eye-bolt and an eye-bolt in the lower bracket p. This arrangement assists in returning the parts to their normal position.
rlhe winding drum w is provided on its end with a bevel gear 2. A stub shaft 5, mounted in bearings 6, 7, has iXed thereon a sprocket wheel 8, and a bevel gear 9, the latter meshing with and adapted to drive the gear 2 and thus the winding drum/w.
Referring now to Fig. 2, an idler sprocket 10, mounted on a pivot 11, is connected to the sprocket 8 by a chain drive 12.
A hydraulic piston cylinder 13 is supported approximately in the position indicated by the broken lines in Fig. 1, and 14 is a piston head reciprocable within said cylinder. The piston rod 15 is connected at its outer end to the chain 12, and the movements of the piston in the cylinder will transmit corresponding rotation of the winding drum co. A compression coil-spring 16 (see Fig. 2) tends to hold the piston in retracted position.
A force pump, diagrammatically represented by 17 in Fig. 1, is supported on a bracket 1S beneath the loor of the truck. The outlet of said pump is connected with the rear end of the cylinder 18 by a conduit 19, and the inlet of the pump is connected with the fore end of the cylinder by a conduit 20. Said conduits 19, 2O are further connected by a by-pass conduit 21, in which is located a valve The valve is provided with an operating arm 2?, and a link 2l connects said arm with. a control lever 25, the latter being located at a convenient point near the drivers seat. A loose driving belt 26 connects the pump pulley 27 with a drive pulley 28, the latter being tast on the propeller shaft Said belt normally slips, but when tightened will transmit a positive drive from the shaft to the pump. A belt tightener pulley 29 is pivoted on an arm 30, the latter being tixed on a rock shaft 31. Said shaft is rocked by a control lever 32 located near the drivers seat.
The general operation of my device is as follows:
rlhe load Z is transferred to the body of the truck in any well known way. rlChe auto truck may then be placed in operative driving state, and v. nile the truck is gaining speed the belt tightener pulley 29 is thrown against the belt 26 so as to cause the pump to be operated and the piston rod 15 projected from the cylinde The movement of this rod will cause the winding drum w to be rotated counter-clockwise, having reference to Fig. 1, and the chains u will be wound on said drum so as to cause the side trame members f: to be drawn inwardly and the top frame member Q to be drawn downwardly until said frame members bind firmly against thetojand sides oiE the load, so as to thereH by securely hold the latter in place.
Vhen the load is to be discharged from the truck, the operator will open the valve 22 by means of the control lever 25, thereby forming a bypass from the iront to the rear side of the piston cylinder, and the action of the springs will cause the parts to be re turned to normal position.
l claim:
1. In combination with an auto truck, a load binding device comprising a trame mounted transversely on the body of said truck, and means for moving the sides of said frame inwardly so as to cause them to bind on the load.
2. In combination with an auto truck, a load binding device comprising` a iframe mounted transversely on the body of said truck, means for adjusting the sides of said frame so as to cause them to bind on the load, and means for returning the sides of the frame to initial position.
3. In combination with an auto truck, a load binding device comprising a frame mounted transversely on the body of said truck, means for adjusting' the sides or" said frame so as to cause them to bind on the load, and spring means for returning the sides of the frame to initial position.
et. In combination with an auto truck, a load binding device comprising an adjustable frame mounted transversely on the body of said truck, and means for adjusting the sides ot said frame so as to cause them to bind on the load, said means including a hydraulic jack.
5. In combination with an auto truck, a load binding device comprising an adjust-- able frame mounted transversely on the body of said truck, means for adjusting the sides of said i' 1ame so as to cause them to bind on the load, said means including a hydraulic jack, and driving connections between said jack and the propeller shaft of the truck.
6. In combination with an auto truck, a load binding device comprising an adjustable frame mounted transversely on the body of said truck, means for adjusting the sides of said trame so as to cause them to bind on the load, said means including a hydraulic jack, and releasable driving connections between said jack and the propeller shaft of the truck.
7.
