Be it known that I, PETER A. VETZEL, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Oak Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cabinets, of which the t'ollowing is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.

My invention relates to cabinets, and in its more specic aspect to cabinets having a sliding drawer provided with means for tiling sheet music in a vertical position.

The aggregate weight of a large numberof sheets of music and the drawer containing them is considerable, and it has been found that when the drawer containing them is pulled out the weight will cause the whole cabinet to tip over forward unless means are provided to prevent this.

One of the objects of my invention is to provide such means of improved character.

Further objects will appear from the detailed description to follow. f

In the drawings, in which I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved eabinet, parts being broken away to show the location of certain counterweights, and the slide and guide;

F ig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section showing the drawer pulled to its extreme outer position, and showing also, in dotted lines, the position which it assumes when it is pushed in;

Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section through the casing and drawer;

Fig. 4 is a detail elevation showing the rear end of one of the slides and the bearing and stop device attached thereto; and

Fig. 5 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 4.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, reference character 11 indicates the base of the device to which is secured, in any suitable manner, a casing 12 having a rear wall 12a. A drawer 13, provided with side walls 18a, is mounted to move from a position substantially within said casing to the position shown in full lines in F ig. 2. Secured to the front of the drawer is a handle 13. IVithin the casing 12 and secured to the side walls thereof, is a pair of horizontally extending guides 14 having grooves 14a in their lower faces terminating somewhat short of the secured to the casing in any suitable mannerA as by screws 15. Slides 17 are secured to the walls 132L of the drawer by means of screws 18. Combined bearing and` stop members 19 are secured to the rear ends of the slides 17 by means of screws 20. The members 19 include an upwardly extending stop 21 which travels in the Vgrooves 14a and comprise also downwardly extending ears 22 through which a pin 23 extends on which is rotatably mounted a friction roller 24. Friction rollers 25'are mounted at the lower front end of the casing 12,v as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Friction rollers 25a are secured to the lower rear end of the drawer 13. The drawer is provided with a: movable rest 26 having a downwardly extending apertured ear 27, which travels on the guide rod 2S, as shown in Fig. 3.

Vv'ithin the'casing, and at the rear end thereof, is a pair of counter-weights 29 having lugs 30 and 31 through which extend screws 32 for securing said weights to the casing. It will be noted that the guides 14 extend substantially to the rear end of the casing and that there is sufficient space between these guides and the counter-weights to permit the entry of the rear ends of the slides 17.

The operation of my device is as follows:

Assuming that the drawer is filled with sheet music arranged in vertical position and held in vertical position by means of the rest 26, and that the drawer is in the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2, the drawer is grasped by the handle 13b and drawn forward. As long as the center of gravity of the drawer and its contents is in the rear of the rollers 25 the weight of said drawer and its contents will be carried by the rollers 25n and 25. However, after the drawer is pulled out to such an extent that its center of gravity falls in front of the rollers 25 the rear end of the drawer will tend to tip up and the roller 24 will bear against the lower edge of the guides 14. IVhen the drawer is pulled completely out to the full line position shown in Fig. 2 it will be seen that there is considerable tendency for it to tip over forwardly. This, however, is prevented by the counter-weights 29 at the rear of the casing.

It will be noted that I have made two uses of the space which is back of the drawer when it is pushed in as far as it will I'have used it to contain the counterweights 29 and also to accommodate the rearward extensions of the slides 17. t will be noted that by locating the rollers. 25 on this rearward extension l am able to pull the drawer farther out than would otherwise be the case. The reason for this is that the roller 24 is thus locatedto the rear of the drawer and will prevent the latter from tipping downwardly and forwardly about the roller 25.

The outward movement of the drawer is limited by the stop 21 coming in Contact with the front wall of the groove 14a, thus preventing the drawer from being pulled completely outof the casinv.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isz- 1. A cabinet comprising a base, a casing mounted thereon, a drawer mounted to move from a position substantially within said casing to a position in which it protrndes from one end of said casing, and in which its center of gravity falls outside said base, and a counter-weight secured to said cabinet within said casing at that end of the casing opposite the one through which the drawer protrudes whose center ot' gravity falls within said base, a guide within the cabinet secured to the side thereof and eX- Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing tending substantially from the front to the rear thereof, said drawer having a member secured thereto extending rearwardly therefrom and a bearing device on said extension for engaging said guide, said drawer being so large` that when full and in position it would cause the cabinet to upset without the counter-weight.

A cabinet comprising drawer slidably mounted to move from a position substantially within said casing to a position in which it extends from said casing, a cleat secured to said drawer, a second cleat secured to said casing, said second cleathaving a groove therein terminating nearfthe front of the casing, a plate member secured to said iirst cleat having a stop member secured thereto for engagement with the end of said groove to limit the outward movement of said drawer,'and a pair of ears eX- tending therefrom, and a roller journaledy `between said ears, said first cleat being recessed to receive said ears and roller.
