To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SILAS IV. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oglesby, in the county of Coryell and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bedsteads, and more particularly to metallic bedsteads in which the head of the bed is composed of two corner posts connected by top and bottom rails, with spaced upright rails extending between the latter. The head of the bed is therefore an open-work frame which is objectionable in cold weather as it does not exclude drafts, and the pillows also work back between the uprights. The invention therefore has for its object to pro vide a device whereby these objections are eliminated, and also to provide in connection with the device, a means for elevating the head portion of the spring mattress or bed bottom.
The object stated is attained by means of a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.

Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes the head of a metallic bedstead. As ordinarily constructed, this portion of the bedstead is composed of two corner posts 6 connected by top and bottom cross rails 7, and spaced vertical rails 8 extending between the latter, an open-work structure being thus had. In order to exclude drafts through this structure in cold weather, there has been devised a head board 9 for Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the covering or closing up the same. This head board is positioned in front of the head 5 and is of such length as to extend between the corner posts thereof. The height of the head board is such that it reaches from the bed bottom up to a short distance from the top of the head, the head being thus covered sufficiently to protect the occupants of the bed from drafts, and also to prevent the pillows from working back between the rails 8.
The following means are provided for detachably connecting the head board 9 to the head 5. On the back of the head board are clamping members 10 which embrace the corner posts 6 and are fastened thereto by thumb nuts 11. Upon releasing these clamping members, the head board may be removed, and it is therefore not a permanent fixture, which is desirable, as there is no necessity for its use in warm weather.
The head board 9 may be made of wood or metal, and it may be given any ornamental design as the fancy dictates.
The bedstead is shown provided with a spring bottom or mattress l2, and in order to hold up the head end thereof and to prevent the same from sagging, there is provided a connection with the head board 9. This connection comprises chains 13 carried by hooks 14 secured to the head board, said chains depending from the head board and their lower ends being hooked to the border wire of the mattress or bed bottom. The chains are therefore also detachable when the head board is taken off.
I claim The combination with a bedstead having an open-work head portion; of a closure for said portion comprising a head board, means for detachably connecting the head board to said head portion of the bedstead, and bed-bottom supporting means depending from the head board and attachable to the head portion of the bed-bottom.
