To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. LUTz, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Old Men, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a mechanism for holding a drill in position for drilling and relates more particularly to what is termed in practice an old'man.
The object of the invention is to provide a device for rigidly and effectively holding a drill correctly centered'and providing a means for feeding and actuating the drill during the drilling operation. It has for a further object to provide a novel type of feed screw adapted to cooperate with either a drill holder provided with a center point or one provided with a counterbored center opening. It has for a further object to provide a device whereby a drilling operation may be carried out at any desired angles, that is to say, the drill may be operated in a vertical, horizontal or angular position.
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described except as required by the scope of the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the drill mechanism embodying my invention; Fig. 2 represents a section of the feed screw centering'device; Fig. 3 represents a section on line :va2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4: represents a section on line y-y of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 represents a section of one form of drill holder; Fig. 6 represents a plan of the arm of the device; Fig. 7 represents an end elevation of the arm head; Fig. 8 represents a plan of the base; Fig. 9 represents a side elevation showing a form of ratchet drill holder.

1 designates the base of the old man which consists, in 'the present instance, of a suitable plate provided with a longitudinal slot 2 through which a bolt 3 or like fasten.- 1ng device maybe passed to removably but fixedly secure the base upon a'suitable support. One end of the base is preferably provided with a boss 4 having an opening to receive the fixed end 5 of the upright or standard 6, which serves as a guide and'support for a head 7, this latter being prefer.- ably split as shown at '8 in order that the part may be adjustably secured to the upright 6. A fastening bolt or stud 9 engages the split portion 8 of the head and serves as a clamping means to hold the part in fixed position after the head has been properly adjusted with respect to the work or stock. In the preferred embodiment of the invention the head 7 is also provided with a flanged portion forming substantially a face plate 10 which may be of any desired size in accordance with the dimension of its cooperating part. 11 designates a slot formedin the plate at one side thereof, while at the opposite side there is a bolt opening 12 for the purpose presently to be described.
13 designates a second face plate, in the present instance substantially similar in general contour to the plate 10 and having a slot 14 provided at one side and a bolt or clamping member opening 15 at the Opposite side, it being noted that the slots and openings of the two plates are oppositely arranged with respect to each other so that when the two parts are placed in abutting relation or face to face the slot of one plate will be alined with the bolthole of the other plate. In this manner free angular adjustment of the plate 13 is had without weakening the material of either of the plates and-the movement is only limited by the length of the slots.
16 designates anarm preferably formed 7 as an integral-part of the plate 13 and having a longitudinal slot 17 therein extending substantially the length of the arm, the sides of which slot are. formed by flanges-'18 arranged preferably in parallel relation and serving to stitlen and strengthen the arm. It will further be noted that each flange is undercut or grooved as shown at 19, on the side facing the slot, to receive a nut or threaded member 20 with which the clamping bolt 21 is adapted to cooperate. This clamping bolt preferably passes through a lug or extension 22 formed upon an internally threaded bushing 23 so that when the said bolt is drawn into operative position by advancing into the nut 28 the bushing will be firmly clamped to the arm 16.
2 1 designates a feed screw operating through the bushing 23 and extending through the slot 17, said screw having one extremity provided with an extension 25, the outer face of which has a central coun terbored hole 26. This hole 26 is provided to receive and locate the center of a drill holder and properly aline the drill. The opposite extremity of the feed screw 24 is provided with an extension 27 terminating in a conical center-point 28 adapted to cooperate with the counterbored center hole 29 of the drill holder member 30. In this manner the drill may be exactly centered irrespective of the type of drill holder employed, since the feed screw, being reversible, is adapted to coact with either a conical center or a counterbored center. 81 designates radial openings arranged prefreably at suitable intervals about the extension 27 for the purpose ofreceiving a suitable implement for actuating or imparting rotary movement to the feed screw. T he drill holder 30 is provided with the customary drill socket 32 and lateral opening for inserting a drift bolt or the like for ejecting the drill. in Fig. 9 l have shown a ratchet type drill holder wherein 24 designates the cylindrical body portion with which the annular member 35 has threaded engagement and carries the conical center-point 36 for use with the extension 25 of the feed screw. 37 indicates a twist drill held by the holder 30 ready for a drilling operation which may be accomplished by gripping the holder with a suitable clamping device, such as acompression wrench, tooperate it as a ratchet.
In the operation of the device it-will be understood that the old man is of a port-- able nature and may be carried from one part of the shop to another and set up at any point for use by clamping the base 1 upon a suitable bench, table or machine bed, as the case may be. The arm 16 is then adjusted for height with respect to the work after which if required it may also be adjusted angularly by loosening the clamping devices for the plates 10 and l8 and turning one; with respect to the other. Further adjustment is had by shifting the feed screw bushin 23 radially with respect to the upright o With all partsfixedhtadjusted peneeaeeo sitionthe drill is definitely centered and so remains for all the operations desired. In case the type of drill holder to be used is that shown in Figs. 1 and l, the parts are adjusted as shown in Fig. 1 and the drill may then be operated, for example, by fitti ng a compression wrench about the body of the holder and while reciprocating the wrench the feed screw may be simultaneously actuated so that the drill is advanced into the stock. In case the form of holder shown in Fig. 9 is to be used, the feed screw 24 is reversed in the bushing 23 in order to bring the counterbored end into position to be engaged by the center 36. The drilling operation may then be carried outby gripping the body 34- with a compression wrench and imparting a ratchet action thereto. .lt will now be apparent that I have devised a complete unitary device for use in drillirg operations, wherein all the parts are simple in constipation.- effective in op eration. and may readily be as embled and operated by unsk lled labor. Furthermore the arm 16, as will be noted. may be turned about the upright 6 and lined in any desired position in order to take in all work within the radius of the arm when rotated about the upright as an axis. In addition the arm may be turned about its longitudinal axis also with n all ordinary limits, thus allowthe drill to assume a large number of diti erent angular positions and give a wide range of operation.
It will now be apparent that I have devised anovel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description. and while l. have in the present instance shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof wh ch has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results. it is to be und rstood that the same is susceptible of modification various particulars within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrific ng any of its advantages.
Having now described m invention. what I claim as new and desire to protect by Let ters Patent is 1. In a device of the character stated. the combination of a laterally disposed arm having a slot therein. the walls of said slot being undercut to form oppositely disposed grooves. means to support said arm for vertical adjustment an adjustable clamping de vice between said supporting means and said arm for varying the angular posit'on of said arm. a threaded bushing". means onerable in said grooves for adjustablv' hold:- ing said bushing in a predetermined position. and a "feed screw reversibly mounted in said bushing and provided with a eoni cal eenterpoint at one end. and
bored center hole at its opposite end, Whereby either end of said feed screw is adapted to engage a tool holder.
2. The combination of a reversible feed screw having a conical center-point at one end and a counter-bored center hole at its opposite end, either being adapted to engage a tool, a drill brace arm adapted to adjustably carry said feed screw and mean to adjust said arm vertically, horizontally 10 and angularly about its longitudinal axis.
