VIBRATING RETOUCHING-IPENCIL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 6, 1917.
Application filed. Marc 1 917, 56 151110 5 66.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CALVIN HUBERT GIL- BERT, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Independence, Buchanan count, Iowa, have invented con tain new and useful Improvements in Vibrating Retouching-Pencils, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in vibrating retouching pencils, and the object of my improvement is to supply such an implement with electrically actuated means for imparting thereto combined transverse oscillatory and longitudinal vibratory movements. This object I have accomplished by the means which are hereinafter described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which the figure is a representation of my improved vibrating retouching pencil, the operating means, lts housing and part of the pencil container being shown in central longitudinal section.
I am aware that in devices of this kind, means have been heretofore employed for imparting to the pencil transverse oscillatory or vibratory movements, but it is my purpose to largely increase the efficiency of such an implement by providing special means adapted to give the same longitudinal vibration for producing a stippling effect while the same mechanism simultaneously imparts to the pencil rapid transverse vibrations.
The hollow shaft 1 is provided with a well-known adjustable holding receiver 2 for a pencil point 3, and the end of said shaft opposite said pencil point is mounted in one end of an alined central hollow 11 in a terminal block 4:. A small electromagnet 5, having a straight core 13, is mounted within said hollow 11 and secured to the outer end of the block 4 by means of a bracket 19. The winding of this electromagnet is electrically connected by terminals 6 to conducting bodies 7 fixed on opposite sides of the block 4, said bodies having sockets to receive terminal points 9 of flexible conductors 10, secured by means of setscrews 8.
The numeral 14 denotes a small disk- The numeral 16 denotes a dome-shaped cover interiorly threaded to removably fit exterior threads on the block 4 and to receive said armature and its carrying spring. Said cover 16 is provided with a central threaded opening in alinement with said armature and electromagnet, and is adapted to receive the threaded stem of an adjusting screw 15 whose end bears upon a rounded boss 17 upon the top of said spring immediately above said armature,
When an alternating current is in circuit with said electromagnet the armature 14, through the interaction of the electromagnet and the reactive tension of the bent spring 12, is caused to rapidly vibrate into and out of contact with the adjacent end of the core 13, imparting to the latter and to the connected pencil 8 rapid longitudinal vibra tion which permits the latter to be used for stippling without manual effort on the part of the operator.
Since the bent spring 12 is secured upon the block at to one side of said electromagnet, when the armature 1A is thus brought into rapid vibration and contact with the core of the electromagnet, the spring exercises a lateral pull upon the armature which causes the armature to make its impacts upon the magnet core with glancing blows thus transmitting through the spring to the pencil holder simultaneous transverse vibration, so that the pencil may be used in retouching to do stippling while at the same time making minute wave marks which renders it peculiarly efiective in the retouching of negatives.
Various modifications may be made in the structures of my device without departing from the principle of this invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A vibrating retouching pencil, comprising a pencil, and a resilient tapping positioned thereover and connected to one side thereof adapted to jar it obliquely, oscillate it transversely and longitudinally simultaneously.
2. A vibrating retouching pencil, comprising a pencil, and means connected thereto adapted to oscillate it transversely and longitudinally simultaneously, consisting of an electromagnet mounted on the pencil, and an armature resiliently supported to one side Copies of this patent may be obtained for pole of said electromagnet, said armature being mounted on a plate-spring su ported at one side of the electroma net, and means for adjusting the tension 0 said spring to position the armature at varying distances 15 from the pole of said electromagnet.
Signed at Waterloo, Iowa, this 1st day of March, 1917.
CALVIN HUBERT GILBERT.
