Be it known that I, EMIL ZMMERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butternut, in the county of Ashland and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe Spark- Arresters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to stove pipe spark arresters and the primary object of the invention is to provide a Y spark arrester adapted to be pivotally mounted in the eX- haust pipe of a stove or furnace for obstructing and retarding the Hying sparks and cinders so that they will be prevented from escaping through the pipe while at the same time, the device will permit the smoke and gases to freely pass through the pipe.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a stove pipe spark arrester which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.

For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which;

In stoves and heaters which are adapted to consume wood, waste, and other similar quick burning material, it has been found that the sparks and cinders will pass up the Hue or stove pipe in an ignited condition and often are the cause of conHagration in ad jacent property. In order that the smoke and gases from the burning fuel may be permitted to easily escape and to obtain the proper draft in the stove and to retard the Hying sparks and cinders, I have provided the device herein illustrated adapted to be mounted in the Hue or stove pipe designated by the numeral l.

A rotatable damper-rod 2 is mounted for rotary movement in apertures 3 provided at opposite points in the Hue l. One end of the rod is provided with a handle 4 by which the device may be turned for placing the or wires are provided and have their ter-` minals fastened to the ring 5. Thesev rods are arranged so that one series 6 will bek disposed below tlie other series 7. In other words, the rods in the upper series 7 are provided with an arc of a greater depth than the rods in the lowermost" series 6. The lower series 6 includes the rods 8 and the upper series includes the rods 9 and, by referring to Fig. l of the drawing, it will be observed that each alternate rod 8 or 9 is included in one or the other of the series 6 and 7 respectively so that the space between two of the rods 8 in the lowermost series is obstructed by one of the rods 9 in the uppermost series although the latter is disposed in a higher plane than the rods 8. Thus, two series of rods are provided for the obstruction of the Hying sparks and cinders as they pass upwardly from the fire box of the stove.

This construction permits the smoke and gases to pass freely up the Hue, while the burning sparks and cinders are caused to drop back into the fire boX of the stove until they are entirely consumed.

Two arcuate supporting rods 10 and 11 are provided, one for each series and these rods extend across the ring 5 in a direction opposite to that of the rods 8 and 9. Warping and distortion of the rods in each series is thereby prevented.

From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable stove pipe sparkv arrester has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood however, that slight changes in the minor details of construction rmay be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

I claim:

1. A spark arrester comprising a rotatable rod. and a plurality of arcuate rods carried by the said rotatable rod and arranged to comprise two series of rods one disposed above the other.

2. A spark arrester comprising a rotatable rod, a circular ring carried by the rod and adapted to lbe rotated therewith, and a plurality of arcuate rods carried by the ring, each alternaterod being of a greater arc than the adjacent rod.

8. A spark arrester comprising a rotaia ble rod, a circular ring carried by the rod and adapted to be rotated therewith, two series of arcuate rods having their terminals fastened to the ring, and a supporting rod for each series of rods.

4. A sparlrarrester comprising a rotatable rod having a handle formed at one end thereof, a ring supported by the rod and adapted to be rotated thereby, a series of rods 'of arcuate formation having their terminals fixed to the said ring, and a second series of rods of arcuate formation having their terminals fixed to the said ring, the arc of the second series of rods being greater than the are of the said first series, and a supporting rod for each series of rods.

5. A spark arrester comprising al rotatable rod having a handle formed at one end thereof, a ring supported by the rod and adapted to be rotated thereby, a series of rods of arcuate formation having their ter minals fixed to the said ring, and a second series of rods of arcuate formation having their terminals fixed to the said ring, the arc of the second series of rods being greater than the arc of the said first series, the rods of each series extending across the ring in equally spaced relation to each other, the rods in the said second series being disposed above the center of the space between the rods in the lower series, and a supporting Y rod for each series 'of rods.
