Be it known that I, WALTER WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Type-lriting and Computing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a correction mechanism to be 'used in connection with computing machines of the Underwood- Wright type, and is herein disclosed as an improvement on the application of Wright and Degener, No. 543,603, filed February 12, 1910.
A feature of this invention is to enable the correction of an error, made with a computing mechanism embodying one or more computing heads, by temporarily reversing the action of such of said heads as may be active, without interfering with the individual controlling mechanism of each head.
This may be accomplished' by interposing between the motor drive and the computing heads a push button-controlled reversing mechanism, which will change the direction of the drive of thegearing connected to the computing heads, so that such of said gearing as is actively connected to the computing heads will drive the active parts of the computing head in a reverse direction.
The invention is illustrated in connection with a combined typewriting and computing machine of the Underwood-'Wright type as set 'forth insaid application No. 543,603, in which a master wheel for each computing headis given a rotation, the extent of which depends on the particular numeral key struck. This rotation is obtained from a motor drive, and controlled by an escapement mechanism operated diiferent degrees at the actuation ofthe numeral keys. The rotation and direction of rotation of the individual master wheels on cach computing head may be individually controlled by clutches shiftable by levers to occupy one of three positions corresponding to adding, subtracting and neutral. Each computing head also is providedY with tens carrying mechanism,` which is likewise simultaneously controllable by means of clutches, which are shifted through the lintermediary of supplementary levers from the main levers. versa-1 of all the master wheels and of all the tens carrying mechanisms in the present invention, the gearing which connects the master wheel drive and the tens carrying drive to the motor may be provided with clutches, which are shiftable to reverse the direction of drive from the motor. The clutches may be connected to a common shifter, shown in the form of a push rod, so that the master wheel drive and the tens carrying drive will be reversed at the same time.

Referring more particularly to the separate parts of this invention as embodied in the form shown in the drawings, 1 indicates letter keys and 2 numeral keys, which are secured to key levers 3, which operate, through the intermediary of bell cranks 4, type bars 5, so as to swing the latter up against the front side of a platen 6 carried by a carriage 7, which slides on one or more rails 8. The movement of the carriage 7 may be obtained in the usual manner stepby-step at each actuation of a key by the release of an escapement mechanism, indicated generally by the numeral 9, which may be of the usualUnderwood type.
The computing mechanism may be controlled from the numeral keys 2 in the manner described in said application No. 543,603, wherein it was shown that each numeral key lever 3 was adapted to pull down on a. link 10, so as to rock a bell crank 11, thereby pulling down a link 12 to swing a lever 13 about its pivot 14. The swinging of each of the levers 13, of which there is one for each numeral key, plunges a jack actuate 15 against a corresponding pin 16 provided in a primary escapement wheel V17. The primary escapement wheel 17 is normally held from rotation by one of the projected pins 16 engaging an escapement wheel 18, which is secured to another escapement Wheel 19 engaging one of a pair of dogs 20 on a rock shaft 21. 4 4
The rock shaft 21 is oscillated at each actuation of a numeral key, as described in said above-mentioned application, so as to release thefescapementl wheels 18 and 19, and thus permit airotation of the primary escapement wheel 17 a predetermined amount, dependin' upon the particular numeral vkey u I until the next projected pin 16 engages the escapement wheel 18. This mechanism,which may be termed the escapement mechanism I for the computing mechanism, determines the extent of rotation of a shaft 22, to which the primary escapement wheel 17 is secured, and which is provided with a gear 23 meshing with a corresponding gear 23. on a shaft 24. The shaft 24 is also provided with a bevel gear 25 meshing with bevel gears 26 and 27 Asecured respectively to shafts 28 and 29. The shaft29 is driven from a motor 30 through the intermediary of a slip clutch not shown, and also through the intermediary of intermeshing bevel gears 31 and 32, lthe latter of which is secured to the shaft29. These shafts 28 and 29 form a portion of the gearing connecting the motor 30with the gearing for driving the rotatable parts of one or Vmore computing heads 33 yand 34, of which two are shown.
Each of the computing heads-is preferably of the type shown in said application No. 543,603 above-mentioned, and includes, as will be seen by reference tol Fig. 3, a master wheel 35 splined on a shaft 36, so as to have a movement relative to a series of computing wheels 37, whereby it will be capable of engaging with the internal gears 38 provided by the inwardly projecting teeth of these computing wheels, thus enabling ythe master wheel to successively actuateeach of these computing wheels. The relative movement of ythe master wheel and the computing wheels may be obtained in any suitable manner, as for example. that described in my co-pending application No. 574,813, filed August 1, 1910, wherein the master wheels are manipulated step-by-step at each'new column by a lever 105 provided with anautomatic catch 100, which is engaged and operated by a series of column stops 101carried by a rack 102 on the carriage 7.Y These computing Wheels are also provided with external teeth forming external vgears 39 ymeshing with `the gears 40 carrying thedial wheels 41, so that the numerals marked on the. dial wheels will be oxhibitedgthrough an opening 42 inthe casing lof each computing head, thereby showing the particular computation run up by the numeral keys.
Each of the shafts 36 for the computin heads 33 and 34 is provided with a beve gear, indicated for the respective computing heads by the numerals 43 and 44. These bevel gears each mesh with a pair 0f bevel gears loosely mounted on a shaft 45 and faced in opposite directions, so as to be capable of rotating the gears 43 and 44 in opposite directions, according to which member of the pair is rotated. To connect the pairs of bevel gears, which are indicated by the numerals 46, 47, 48 and 49, in driving relation with the shaft 45, there are provided clutches 50 and 51 splined on the shaft 45, so as to be shiftable to cause the teeth provided on opposite ends thereof to enga y with correspondin teeth on the inwardy facing sides of eac member of the pairs of bevel gears.
Each of the clutches is provided with a circular groove, so as to be engaged by pins 52 carried by shifting levers 53 and 54. The shifting levers 53 and 54 are pivoted respectively at 55 and 56 by means of pins, and are lcapable of occupying any one of three positions corresponding to the connection of each of the gears of a pair in driving relation with the shaft 45, and also with a neutral position in which neither gear of the pair is in driving relation with the shaft 45. To secure the levers 53 and 54 in any position of adjustment, they are provided with a plurality of notches 57, preferably three in number, which are engaged by spring detents 58.
To connect the shaft 45 with the shaft 28 so` that there will be an unbroken drive between the motor 30 and the master Wheels 35, the shaft 45 has secured thereto a bevel gear 59, which meshes with a pair of oppositely facing bevel gears 60 and '61 loosely mounted on the shaft 28, but capable of be-` ing connected in driving relation therewith by a clutch 62, which is splined on the shaft 28, and has teeth on opposite ends thereof capable of engaging with corresponding teeth on the inwardly facing sides of the gears 60 and 61. v
In the type of computing head shown herewith, it is essential to transfer a complete rotation of one of the lowercomputing wheels 37 to a partial rotation of the next highest computing wheel in the series. For,` this purpose, there is provided a tens carrying mechanism indicated in general by the numeral 63, which depends for itscomplete action, as described in said application` N. 5437.603, on the rotation and direction of rtation of a rubber roller 64. This rubber l roller64, in the case of the computing heads 33 and 34, respectively, is connected to bevel gears 66 and 67, as described in said application 543,603, by v'a train of gearing, ini
dicated in general by the numeral 65. The bevel gears 66 and 67 -niesh with pairs of bevel gears loosely mounted on a shaft 68, and indicated by the numerals 69, 70, 71 and 72. The pairs of bevel gears may be connected in driving relation with the shaft 68, so as to drive the bevel gears 66 and 67 in different directions by means of clutches 7 8 and 74, which are splined on the shaft 68, and capable of being slid, so that the teeth on opposite ends thereof will engage with corresponding teeth on the inwardly facing sides of each v'member of the pair of gears. The clutches 78 and 74 are provided with circular grooves engaged by pins 75 mounted on supplementary levers 76 and 77, which are pivoted respectively on pins 78 and 79 secured respectively to the main shifting levers 58 and 54. These supplementary levers are each provided with a pair of lingers 80 and 81 projecting on opposite sides of the pivot pins and 56, so as to permit a limited motion of the supplementary levers relative to the main shifting levers. This limited motion or play may be taken up by springs 82 and 88, which are secured at one end to the supplementary levers and at the other end to the pins 78 and 79. It will thus be seen that, by a simple movement of one of the levers 58 or 54, both of the clutches controlling the rotation-and direction of rotation` of both the master wheel and the tens carrying mechanism of a computing head can be simultaneously shifted, and thereby form a controlling mechanism for the state of the computing head, as to adding, subtracting or remaining neutral or inactive.
The shaft 68 may be also driven from the motor 80yby being provided with a bevel gear 84, which meshes with a bevel gear 85 secured on a counter shaft 86, which has a bevel gear 87 meshing with a bevel gear 88 on a shaft 89. The shaft 89 may be driven from the shaft 29, which as has been stated before is driven from the :motor 80, by being provided with a gear 90' iXed thereon and meshing with both members of pair of gears 91 and 92 loosely .mounted on the shaft 29, and facing in opposite directions, so as to be capable of driving the shaft 89 in opposite directions. To connect the gears 91 and 92 in driving relation with the shaft 29, there is located betweenv them a clutch 98 splined on the shaft 29 and shiftable from a position with its teeth on one end in engagement with corresponding teeth on the inner side of the gear 91 to a `position with theteeth on the opposite end thereof in engagement with corresponding teeth on the inner face of the gear92. j 'o y f- It is desirable that both .the clutch 62 and the clutch 98 be shifted simultaneously, so as to concomitantly control the direction of drive'` of thegearingfor the master wheels and the gearing for the tens carryinf mechanisms of all of the computing hea s. For this purpose, a shifter 94 is provided, which is shown in the form of a rod slidingly mounted in bearings 95, and having a pair of arms 96 and 97, which engage in circular grooves in the clutches 62 and 98.
The rod 94 is provided at its front end, where it extends in front of the machine, with a push-button 98, so that it can be readily forced rearwardly against the tension of a spring 99, which normally holds it in its forward position corresponding to the engagement of the clutches 62 and 98 with the gears and 91. Then forced rearwardly, this shifter will cause .the clutches 62 and 98 to connect the gears 61 and 92 in driving relation with the shafts 28 and 29.
The operation of the device will be readily understood when taken in connection with the above description. In the performing of a combined operation of inscribing numerals on the work sheet on the platen and computing said numerals, the numeralkeys 2 are actuated in any desired sequence according to the numeral which it is desired to transcribe and compute. By the actuation of the numeral keys 2, the escapement mechanism is released, so as to cause the rotation of the master wheels different amounts according to the particular numeral key struck, and in a direction normally controlled by the position of the shifting levers 58 and 54. The master4 wheels are automatically shifted step-bystep through the series of computing wheels by a stop-controlled lever 95, so as to actuate each one to correspond to the separate digit columns as the carriage moves step-by-step in a. letter feeding direction.
It isto be understood that the computing heads may be in the same state or in. different states, that is to say, one may be adding and the other subtracting, or one may be neutral and the other adding or subtracting. If an error has been made, the typist, in order to correct the same, has but to press the push-button 98 rearwardly with one iinger, so as to concomitantly reverse the drive of all the lgearing for the master wheels and tens carrying mechanism of all of the computing heads, wherebv such of said computing vheads as are active will have the character of their work changed to just the opposite to that which 4was being performed, while such of said computing heads as were neutral will not be interfered. with, but allowed to remain neutral or inactive. This will enable the typist to strike with a finger of the other hand the erroneous numerals by the actuation of the numeral keys 2, whereby if a computing head has been adding these erroneous numerals, it will at once subtract them, or if it has been subtracting, it will add these erroneous numerals on the computing wheels,` so as to `bring the com-4 pnting head back to the condition in which it'was before the erroneous numerals had been first struck. The operator can then erase the erroneous numerals from the work sh'eet on the platen, and, after having released the push-button 9S so that the computing heads come back to their normal state corresponding to the particular positions of the shifting levers 53 and 54, the Correct numeral keys can then be struck, causing the computing heads to accumulate thecomp'utation correctly, as it is correctly inscribed 'on the work sheet on the platen. The normal position of the push button, its shifter and the reversing clutches is shown in Fig. l, while the abnormal or reversed position is shown in Fig. 5.
It will thus be seen that a simple and ellicient means is provided for enabling the correction of an error in the computing heads without interfering with the individual controlling mechanism of the separate computing heads, thus relieving the operator of considerable work and thought, and at the same time eliminating certain possibilities of error.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions'of the improvements may be used without others.
.Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination with a plurality of computing heads, each having a master wheel and tens'carrying mechanism, of gearing for 'driving said master wheels, gearing for 'driving said tens carrying mechanisms, said gearings including shiftable means for controlling the direction of drive of said Wheels and said tens carrying mechanisms, and gearing for driving said first and second-mentioned gearings, including a temporary` reversing mechanism for simultaneously reversing the direction of rotation of said l,first and second-mentioned gearings, without vdisturbing the setting of the latter.
2. The combination with a plurality ofcomputing heads, each. having a master wheel and a tens carrying mechanism, of gearing for driving said master wheels, including anindividual means for controlling the rotation of said master wheels, gearing for driving said tens carrying mechanisms, including individual means for controlling the direction of rotation of said tens carrying mechanisms, a source of power, gearing connecting said first and second-mentioned gearing .with said lsource of power, including individual reversing mechanisms for each of said gearings, and means for simultaneously controlling said last-mentioned individual reve'rsirio` mechanisms, whereby the direction of rotation of said gearings may be changed, rwithout disturbing the setting ofthe latter.
3. In a computing machine, the combination of computing mechanism, actuatingputing mechanism by said actuating means,
a connection from said actuating means to said controlling means, carrying mechanism for said computing mechanism, and gearing for said carrying mechanism interposed be-y tween said actuating means and said controlling means for determining the direction of drive of said carrying mechaniml.
4. The combination with a plurality of computing heads, of a shaft, controlling means on said shaft for each of said conv puting heads, to determine the state thereof, and means connected to said shaft for simutaneously controlling the state of all of said computing heads. l
5. The combination with a plurality of computing heads, of a shaft, means for imparting differential movements to said shaft, means on said shaft and head, for determining the state of each of said heads, and means on said shaft to reverse the direction of rotation of said shaft at will, and thereby change thc state of all of said computing heads. n
6. The combination with a computing head, of a shaft, gearing between said computing head and said shaft, means for determining the direction of actuation of said' computing head by said shaft through the intermediary of said gearing, a source power, and gearing connecting said shaft to said source of power, including a reversing mechanism for determining the direction o rotation of said shaft.
7. The combination with a computing head, of a shaft, gearin between said corn-t puting head and said s aft, means for del termining the direction of actuation of said computing head by said shaft through the intermediary of said gearing, a source of power, a gear on said shaft, a pair of gears meshing with said first-mentioned gear, a shaft loosely supporting said pair of gea means for connecting said second-mention shaft with said source of power, and a clutch splined on to said second-mentioned shaft, shiftalble to connect either one lof said pair of gears in driving relation with said lsecondmentioned shaft.
8. The combination with a computing head having a master-wheel, of a gear for rotating said master wheel, a shaft, a pair of gears loosely mounted onsaid shaft and meshing with said first-mentioned gear, a' clutch splined on said shaft and shiftable to connect either one of said pair of gears in' driving relation with said shaft, a. sourceof power, a second shaft connected in dri relation with said source of power, a pais-[ 15 gears loosely mounted on said second shaf a clutch splined on said second shaft an adapted to connect either one of said secondirs . mentioned pair of vgears in driving relation with said second-mentioned shaft, and a gear securedj to said first-mentioned shaft and meshing with said second-mentioned pair of gears.
9. The combination with a computing head having a master-wheel, of a gear for rotating said master wheel, a shaft, a pair of gears loosely mounted on said shaft and meshing with said first-mentioned gear, a clutch splined on said shaft and shiftable to connect either one of said pair of gears in driving relation with said shaft, a source of power, a second shaft connected in driving relation with said source of power, a pair of gears loosely mounted on said second shaft, a clutch splined on said second shaft and adapted to connect either one of said secondmentioned pair of gears in driving relation with said second-mentioned shaft, a gear secured to said first-mentioned shaft and meshing with said second-mentioned pair of gears, and means for shifting said clutches.
10.' The combination with a computing head having a master wheel, of a gear for rotating said master wheel, a shaft, a pair of gears loosely mounted on said shaft and meshing with said first-mentioned gear, a clutch splined on said shaft and shiftable to connect either one of said pair of gears in driving relation with said shaft, a source of power, a second shaft connected in driving relation with said source of power, a pair of gears loosely mounted on said second shaft, a clutch lsplined on said second shaft and adapted to connect either one of said secondmentioned pair of gears in driving relation with said second-mentioned shaft, a gear secured to said first-mentioned shaft and meshing with said second-mentionedl pair of gears, and means for normally holding said second-mentioned clutch in engagement with one of said second-mentioned pair of gears. 11.V The combination with a computing head having a master wheel and tens carrying mechanism, of reversible gearing for driving said master wheel,rreversible gearing for driving said tens carrying mechanism, gearing for driving said first and second mentioned gearing, including a pair of clutches shiftable to change the direction of rotation of said rst and second-mentioned gearing, and a single member for shifting lboth of said clutches simultaneously.
12. The combination with a plurality of computing heads and carrying mechanism for each head, of settable means individual to each head, including gearing for controlling the state of said head as to addition or subtraction, gearing separate from said first-mentioned gearing for controlling the carrying mechanisln associated with each head tocorrespond in'direction of movement to the state of the particular computing head, and means comprising a single shifter for simultaneously reversing the state of all of said computing heads, and changing the direction of movement of all of said carrying mechanisms, acting through the medium of said lirst and second-mentioned gearings out leaving said lsettable means undisturbed.
18. The combination with a plurality of computing heads, each including a master wheel and a tens carrying mechanism, of gearing for driving said master wheels in either direction, gearing for driving said tens carrying mechanism in either direction, gearing for driving said first and second mentioned gearing, including a pair of shiftableclutches for determining the direction of drive of said rst and second mentioned gearings, land a shifter connected to both of said clutches for shifting said clutches simultaneously.
14. In a computing machine, the combination with a plurality of computing heads, of carrying mechanism for each of said heads, means for determining the direction of movement of said computing lheads individually, and for determining the direction of movement of said carrying mechanisms individually, means common to all of said computing heads and means common to all of said carrying mechanisms, for controlling the direction of movement of all of said computing heads and carrying mechanisms independently of said individual controls, and a slidable rod having two arms, one of said arms controlling the means common to the adding heads, and the other arm controlling the means common to the carrying mechanisms,
15. The combination with computingmechanism, a master actuating member therefor, and tens-carrying mechanism, of gearing for driving said master member having a shifting mechanism for controlling the drive thereof, gearing for driving said tenscarrying mechanism having a shifting mechanism for controlling the drive thereof, gearing for driving both sets of said first-mentioned gearing including a reversing mechanism to control the direction of drive thereof, a source of power for driving said last-mentioned gearing, and thus said first-mentioned gearing and said master member, and means for separately driving said shifting mechanism for said tenscarrying mechanism from said source of power.
16. The combination with computing mechanism, a master actuating member therefor, and tens-carrying mechanism, of gearing for driving said master member having a shifting mechanism for controlling the drive-thereof, gearing for driving said tens-carrying mechanism having a shifting mechanism for controlling the drive thereof, gearing for driving both sets of said first-mentioned gearing, including individual reversing mechanism for controlling the direction of drive of said irst and second-mentioned gearings, and a source of power for driving said last-mentioned gearing and thus both said first-mentioned gearings.
17. The combination with computing mechanism, a ymaster member therefor, and tens-carrying mechanism, of gearing for driving said master member having a shifting mechanism for controlling the drive thereof, gearing for driving said tens-carrying mechanism having a shifting mechanism for controlling the drive thereof, gearing for driving both sets of said first-mentioned gearings, including individual reversing mechanism forcontrolling the directionof drive of said first and secondmentioned gearings, a source of power for driving said last-mentioned gearing and thus both said first-mentioned gearings, and a single member common to both said individual reversing mechanisms for operating the same.
18. The combination with a plurality of computing heads, of a master wheel individual to each of said heads, gearing for rotating said master wheels, including an individual drive for each computing head, said drive acting on each master wheel to determine its direction of rotation, and a single controlling means common to all of said computing heads and acting through the medium of said drives for governing the direction of rotation of all of said computing heads.
19. The combination with a plurality of computing heads, of a separately driven master wheel and tens-carrying mechanism for each computing head, a common drive for all the master wheels, a common drive for all the tens-carrying mechanisms, a control for each head common to both the master-wheel drive and the tens-carrying drive, and controlling mechanism common to both the master-wheel drive and the tens-carrying drive for governing the direction of rotation thereof.
20. The combination with a plurality of computing heads, each including a master wheel and tens-carrying mechanism, of a unirotational motor for driving said computing heads, a train of gearing from the motor to said master wheels, including a change drive individual to each master wheel and one common to all master wheels, and a separated train of gearing to drive the tens-carrying mechanisms from said motor, including a change drive for each tens-carrying mechanism and a change drive common to all tens-carrying mecha` nisms.
21. The combination with a plurality of computing heads, each ,including a master rying mechanism and a change drive commonto all tens-carrying mechanisms, and shifting mechanism operating both the change drive common to all said master wheels and the change drive common to all said tens-carrying mechanisms in unison.
22. The combination with a plurality of computing heads, of a master-wheel shaft for each computing head, a drive shaft common to all` said master-wheel shafts, a
change-drive gearing connection between each master wheel shaft and said common shaft, a shaft for driving said common shaft, and a change-drive gearing oonnection between said common shaft and said last-mentioned shaft enabling the change in direction of driving rotation of the former from the latter.
23. The combination with a plurality of computing heads, of a master-Wheel shaft for each of said computing heads, a tenscarrying assisting shaft for each of said computing heads, a drive shaft common to all of said master-Wheel shafts, individual gearing connections between said common shaft and said master-wheel shafts, a drive shaft common to all of said tens-carrying assisting shafts, individual gearing connections between said last-mentioned common drive shaft and said tens-carrying assisting shafts, shafting for driving said com mon drive shafts, and gearing connections between said shafting and said common drive shafts, including reversing gearing for ooncomitantly changing the direction of rotation from said s afting to said common drive shafts.
24, The combination with a plurality of computing heads, each including a master wheel and tens-carrying mechanism, of a. motor for driving said computing heads, a. train of gearing having a slip connection, part going to said master wheels and part going to said tens-carrying mechanisms Q0 that both will be driven from said motor, and including change drive connections, one for the part of said train going to said master wheels and the other for the part of said train going to said tens-carrying mechanisms, numeral keys for controlling the extent of drive of said master wheels' by said motor, and valuatiug mechanism under the control 0f Said numeral keys interposed in said train of gearing at a point between the change drive for Said 25. The combination with a plurality ot' `computing heads, including'a master wheel and a tens-carrying mechanism for each head, of numeral keys controlling the computations of said computing heads, a motor for driving said computing heads amounts accordant with the numeral keys actuated, and a divided train of gearing from said motor to said computing heads, one branch of said train going to said master wheels, and the other branch to said tens-carrying mechanisms, and a valuating mechanism .under the control of said numeral keys, in-
terposedl in said train of gearing to govern the extent of rotations of said master wheels, said train of gearing including a change drive connection for said tens-carrying mechanisms interposed between said motor and said valuating mechanism.
26. The combination with aA plurality otl computing heads, of state-controlling mechanism for each computing head, comprising a manually-settable device individual to each head and means for retaining said device in a position to determine addition or in a position to determine subtraction of said computing head, and a manual control common to all of said computing heads Jor changing the state of all of said computing heads simultaneously while leaving said individual setting devices undisturbed.
27. In a computing machine, the combination of computing mechanism, actuating means therefor, controlling means for determining the extent of movement of the computing mechanism by said actuating means, carrying mechanism for said computing mechanism, and means interposed between said actuating means and said controlling means for driving said controlling means in a constant direction from a movement in a constant direction of said actuating means, and for driving said carrying mechanism in either direction from said movement of said actuating means, comprising gearing and a reversible clutch on said gearing.
28. In a computing machine, the combination of computing mechanism, actuating means therefor, controlling means for determining the extent of movement of the computing mechanism by said actuating means, carrying mechanism for said computing mechanism, means for driving the carrying mechanism from said actuating means, means for reversing the direction of movement of the computing mechanism, comprising a clutch interposed between said controlling means and said actuating means, and means for reversing the direction of movement of said carrying mechanism, comprisinga clutch interposed between said actuating means and said controlling means.
29. In a computing machine, the combination of computing mechanism, actuating means therefor, controlling means for determining the extent of movement of the computing mechanism by said actuating means, carrying mechanism 'for said computing mechanism, means for driving the carrying mechanism from said actuating means, means for reversing the direction of movcment of the computing mechanism, comprising a clutch interposed between said controlling means and said actuating means, means for reversing the direction of movement of said carrying mechanism, comprising a clutch interposed between said actuating means and said controlling means, said clutches being in alinement, and a member common to said clutches for shifting them simultaneously.
30. The combination with computing mechanism, operating means therefor, and tens-carrying mechanism, of means for driving said tens-carrying mechanism, a source of power for driving said driving means, a shiftable mechanism including gearing for determining the direction of drive of said tens-carrying mechanism by said source of power, and means for connecting said operating means with the source of power through the medium of said gearing.
31. rIhe combination with a computing mechanism and tens-carrying mechanism, of means for driving said tens-carrying mechanism, a source of power for driving said means, a shi'ftable mechanism including gearing for determining the direction of drive of said tens-carrying mechanism by said source of power, connecting means from said source of power to said computing mechanism acting through the medium of said gearing, and means for according the direction oi movement of said computing mechanism with that of said tens-carrying mechanism, comprising a shiftable mechanism forming part of said connecting means, and acting concomitantly with said firstmentioned shiftable mechanism.
32. The combination with a plurality of computing mechanisms and tens-carrying mechanisms therefor, of a source of power for driving said computing mechanisms and said tens-carrying mechanisms, controls individual to each computing mechanism for determining its state and for concomitantly according the direction of the drive of the carrying mechanism with that of its corresponding computing mechanism, a shiftable mechanism including gearing for reversing the direction of drive of said tens-carrying mechanisms by said source of power as determined by said individual controls, connecting means to said computing mechanisms from said source of power acting through said gearing, and means acting simultaneously with the movement of said shiftable mechanism for according the drive of all of said computing mechanisms with the direction of drive of the carrying mechanism corresponding therewith.
33. In a calculating machine the combination of a master mechanism, a handle to condition the master mechanism (l) to add, (2) to subtract, or (3) not to calculate, a second master mechanism, a handle therefor to condition the second master mechanism (l) to add, (2) to subtract, or (3) not to calculate, and a reversing handle whereby the condition of both master mechanisms may be simultaneously reversed Without disturbing the setting of the two previously recited handles.
