UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN OORBY, OF RICHMOND TERRACE, GRAVESEND, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR '.IO HUGH W. r LAFFER'IY AND ROBERT LAFFERTY.-
l IMPROVEMENT IN CENTRIFUGAL MACHINES FOR DRAINING SUGAR, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,484, dated March 12, 18.72 3 antedated February 29, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
I, JOHN GoRBY,of RichmondTerrace, Gravesend, England, have invented an Improved Draining-Basket for Centrifugal Machines, of which the following is a specification:
My said invention relates to the constructio of draining-baskets for centrifugal machines, such as are used for separating sirup from sugar. The baskets of these machines have hitherto commonly been made with flat external strainer-plates-that is to say, with plates which are iiat77 before being bent to the plain cylindrical form of the basket, such plates being separated from the inner lining of metallic cloth By my present invention, however, I dispense with the spiral wire, and I make the external strainer plate or shell of a corrugated form, preferring to make the corrugations to run around the shell.
ln the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved centrifugal basket, with one-half shown in vertical section.
rEhe outer shell l of the basket is corrugated, and with corrugations running around it horizontally or circumferentially. The internal metallic cloth 2 bears against the internallyprojecting ridges of the corrugations, and the spaces between such ridges form a series of narrow channels running round between the metallic cloth and the external shell l. Perforations are formed in the corrugated shell l for the egress lof the Sirup, and these consist, by preference, of elongated slits formed in and' along the externally-projecting ridges of the corrugations, and shown in thick black lines in the drawing. With this construction, the sirup has very free egress, with a greatly-diminished tendency' to lodge in and choke the spaces between the metallic cloth and the outer shell, while greater strength'is obtained for the weight of material employed.
I prefer to construct the basket, as shown, with a hollow conical center, 3, by which it is xed on its carrying and actuating spindle 4; and this center 3 is formed with a checked flange, 5, upon which an annular bottom plate, 6, is shrunk and riveted, the cylindrical shell l being fixed to this bottom plate 6. The forms and proportions of the corrugations may obviously be varied, and I contemplate such variations in the construction of my improved draining-baskets.
I claim as my invention- A draining-basket for a centrifugal machine, constructed with a circumferentially corrugated or grooved shell or rim to inclose the same, substantially as herein described.
