F. G. BATES.'
Improvement in Clutch for Machinery.
Patented March,12, 1872.
fly. i.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FRANCIS Gr. BATES, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF, PETER FERGUSON, OF NEW HAVEN COUNTY, AND RUFUS BAKER,
OF MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLUTCHES FOR MACHINERY.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,476, dated March 12, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS G. BATES, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new Improvement in Machinery-Clutch; and I do hereby declare thefollowin g, when taken in connectionwith the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specieation, and represents, in-
Figure 1, a side view; Fig. 2, a section on line z z,- and in Fig. 3, a section on line a'.
This invention relates to an improvementin the machin ery-clutch for which application was iiled December 15, 1871, by Peter Ferguson and myself, and which said application was allowed December 19, 1871, the said Ferguson being one of the assignees in this application. In that clutch the friction device or clutch operates in but one direction-that is, revolving' in one direction the rim is engaged with the friction-ring, and in the other direction is free; hence that clutch can be applied only to one positionthat is, either a right or left hand, as the case may be.
The object of this invention is the construction of a clutch, on similar principles, which will engage in either direction, and it consists in combining with the divided ring within a rim a pair of levers, opcnin g in opposite directions to expand the ring, so that one lever operates in one direction, and the other in the other, but both at the same time.
A is the rim, within which the divided ring B is arranged, here represented as a loose pulley on a shaft, C.4 The ring B is set onto a plate, D, in substantially the same manner as before. In the division of the ring two levers, a d, are arranged, and between these a wedge-shaped slide, a, is thrown, as seen in Fig. 3, to open the two levers, which opening,
expands the divided ring B, causing it to engage with the rim A, within which it is placed, so that the two will revolve together in either direction. To release the ring and rim from such engagement, withdraw the arm n, and to insure its disengagement, Iprefer to employ a spring, f, to close the levers after the withdrawal ofthe arm.
As stated in our former specification before referred to, this device is applicable to many purposes, particularly to loose pulleys running in pairs in opposite directions, as for screwcutting purposes, or as a brake for revolving Wheels.
I claim as my invention- In combination with the divided ring B, arranged within the rim A, the two levers' a d,
provided with a mechanism for opening and closing the said levers to expand or contract the rin g, substantially as specified.
FRANCIS G. BATES.
W'itnesses J. M. STEBBINs, R. V. CROLEY.
