Attached to side sills 2 arevhinge castings 4', which may, as shown, have flanges adapted to lie against the legs of the side sill angles andto be suitably secured thereto, and also having depending hinge lugs to which the doors, 5 may be pivotally connected.

and each pair constitutes a locking toggle, the dogs of each pair extending in opposite directions, and their outer ends are adapted to passbeneath the vertical legs of stiffening' angles 6 and to bear, when the doors are closed,- against the bottom surfaces of bearing blocks 8, fitted into the internal angle. of stiifeners 6, to the legs of which thesaid bearingbloc'ks aresecured. :Blocks 8 may be economically produced in: the form of castings.
-Each locking dog 7 is hung through termediate links 11 froma supporting cast ing or piece-9, which rests upon the upper surface of the bottom flange of the center sill 1, and is secured to that flange and to the web of said sill. The supporting casting is provided with a depending lug 10, which extends through and below said center sill bottom flange, and from the lower end of each lug 10 is suspended the pair of links 11, one on each side of said lug. At their lower ends, each of said links is pivotally connected to one of the locking dogs 7 intermediate its length. p
The inner ends of said locking dogs are pivotally connected with each "other and with an operating link 12 or 12 which extends upwardly between the center sills 1, and when the doors are closed inclines toward one of said'sills.
Operating link 12 is different from link 12, in that it has intermediate its length a loop 13, of such configuration as to permit a. chain 14, of an affiliated door winding mechanism, to operate" through said link without interference, or the link to operate without disturbing said chain.
At its upper ends, each operating link 12 and 12 is pivotallyconnected with a crank arm 15, here shown as being of the bifurcated type, and each of said levers and its associated crank arm forms an operating toggle for controlling the locking toggle. Said crank arms 15 are mounted upon and movable with an operating shaft 16, located between the center sills 1, at or near their tops, and o one side of the vertical plane that is midway between the sills, which is also the central vertical longitudinal plane of the car. Operating shaft 16 may be of rectangular or other non-circular cross-section, and the .hubs of said crank arms have perforations of like contour, or said crank arms may be attached by keys, pins or cotters, etc., and may be operated by any suitable means (not shown).
Each crank arm 15 has an annular distancing and positioning flange 17 on its hub, the latter continuing beyond flange 17 to constitute a bushing 18, which is supported by and is revoluble in bearings 19. Anna lar flange 17 spaces the crank arm 15 a suitable distance from the adjacentbearing 19, and prevents said crank arm changing its position to a point nearer said bearing.

Crank arms 15 are furnished with heels 23, each of which may be an integral extension from one of said crank arms, and which, when the doors are closed, bear against the under side of the top flange of a center sill 1, andso limits themovement of the parts in the door-closing operation. And when the doors are closed, any tendencyfor them to open, as by reason of the weight of the lading, will be proportionately resisted by the reaction through looking dogs7, operating links 12 and 12 and members 15, whose heels 23 bear against the center sill flange, asset forth. The modus 'opemndi is as follows: With the doors closed, and the parts in the position shown in full lines, if it be desired to discharge a load, the operating shaft 16 will be rotated clockwise, as viewed in Figs. 1 and 3, until the crank arms 15 have moved, as indicated, into the recesses in the shaft supporting castings 22.
The upper ends of operating links 12 and 12 will also have been carried by the I only from under blocks 8 but out of the I way ofthe, path ofthe doors 5, which will then drop to their open or discharge positions. The positions of the doors and of the parts of the door lock mechanism under these conditions .is clearly indicated in dot and dash lines in Fig. 1.
Doors 5 are raised to their closed positionsby any suitable means, such as chain 14:, but the raising means is not relied upon to lock and sustain them in place. After the closure of the doors, operating shaft 16 is rota-ted counter-clockwise, and crankarms 15 return to the position shown in full lines.
I Responding to the action .ofth'e crank arms 15, operating links 12 and 12 force the inner pivoted ends of locking dogs 7 downwardly fromthe positions shown in dot and dash lines in Fig. 1 to the full line positions in that figure. Locking dogs 7, during this action, have a reversedv combined rocking and swinging 'motion, and pass beneath their'associated doors andbear against hearing blocks 8. g 7
-The last part of the downward thrust of links 12 and 12 cause the outer ends of the locking dogs 7 to press the inner edges of the doors' in tight contact with the under 1 side of the center sills 1. Each pair of lockline passing through the centers of operat-v ing shaft 16' and the pivotalconnection of the pair of locking dogs. This can onlybe accomplished by the proper and deliberate rotation of said operating shaft 16.

2. In a single locking mechanism for car doors, a locking toggle comprising doorlocking members adapted to be straightened to maintain a plurality of said doors closed,

' 8. In a locking mechanism for drop doors,
a locking toggle supported by oscillatory means and comprising door-locking dogs adapted to swing away from said doors and being pivoted to and rocked by an operating toggle located between and supported by car center sills, and adapted to causesaid locking toggle to support or release said doors, and means for actuating said operat-' ing toggle.
4. In a car door locking mechanism for drop doors on opposite sides of car center sills, a plurality of locking toggles, one for each pair of oppositely disposed doors, each toggle being supported from said sills by oscillatory means and comprising door-locking dogs, an operating toggle pivotally connected to each locking toggle and supported from said sills and adapted to cause said locking dogs to support or release said doors, and means for simultaneously actuating all of said operating toggles.
5. In a car door locking mechanism, doors hinged from car sides and adapted to close against car centersills, a'doorlocking toggle comprising locking dogs, oscillatory links, pivotally connected thereto intermediare their lengths, and supports attached to said center sills for pivotally suspending said links from their centers of rotation.

In a car door locking mechanism, doors adapted to close against car center sills, a locking togglehaving members supported from center sills by oscillatory means, and an, operating toggle comprising a link and a lever and an operating shaft to which said lever is attache I ,7. In a car door operating mechanism, center sills, doors having reinforced Jedges adapted to close against said center sills, bearingvblocks secured to said edges, and a locking toggle comprising door locking dogs supported from said sills by oscillatory means, an-dadapted to be rocked by. operat ing means and to bear against said blocks to support the doors.

In a car door locking mechanism, rockable means adapted to engage doors to main tain them closed, a swinging support for said means-and also an operating toggle therefor comprising a. toggle-jointed link and lever, said lever being suitablysupported, and a shaft for rotating. said leverto cause the engagement and disengagement of the doors 7 by said rockable means.

14-. In a dump-car-door locking mechanism, oppositely extending rockable doorlocking dogs, an operating toggle and means for actuatingsaid toggle to cause said doorlocking dogs to engage said doors.
15. In a car door locking mechanism, rockable locking means for a plurality of doors and operating means therefor, including a leverand a link depending from said lever and pivotally connected to portions of said door locking means that are associated with diiferent doors.
16. In a dumping car, a central girder, plurality of links depending therefrom, locking dogs connected with said links and a dog actuating member connected with said dogs.
