Description

WILLIAM ROE'MER.
7 Staples for Satchels No. 124,449. PatentedMarchl2,,1872.
- Tame-mes. 'ZwewrQr" M 4 z f UNITED STATES PATENT IMPROVEMENT IN STAPLES FOR SATCHELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,449, dated March 12, 1872.
Specification describing certain Improvements in Staples for Satchels, Carpet-Bags, Valises, &c., invented by WILLIAM ROEMER, of Newark,-c0unty of Essex and State of New Jersey.
This invention consists in the arrangement of lugs or flanches in staples, between which the handle-caps or handles are confined.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure I represents a front View of a staple embodying my invention. Fig. II represents a cross-section of the same.
B represents the staple, consisting of a bottom flanch, (t, provided with upright lugs n a, through which the piece m passes and is riveted; or said piece on may be cast into the same. These lugs n a form large flanches on the ends of the staple-pin m, around which the handle or handle-cap A works loosely. The staple B is fastened lengthwise upon the frame or frames of the traveling-bag or valise in the usual manner by means of screws or rivets passing through the bottom flanch a and the frame of the satchel or carpet-bag. Instead of making the staple as above described, where the lugs 12 form the flauches at the ends of the pin on to confine the handle-cap, the same may be made as represented in Fig. III, where the ends of the pin m are bent downward to form legs, the lower ends of which are attached to the frame of the satchel or carpet-bag. At the ends of the straight or working part of the pin m flanches or plates 12 n are arranged,
which may be either cast upon the pin m, or fastened on the sides or legs, and thus form large flanches or projections, between which the'handle cap will work and be confined in its proper place. The arrangement of the flanches n or n at the ends of the pin m confines the part 00 of the handle-cap A, which turns loosely around the pin m, and prevents the same from working off the straight part of the pin m, as is usually the case where this staple-pin only consists of a piece of metal, straight at the middle, where the handle-cap is intended to turn, and then bend downward at each end to form the legs or supports for said staple-pin.
I do not claim fastening the staple or stapleframe lengthwise upon the satchel or traveling-bag; nor do I claim the construction of staples, as above described, for general purposes; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described staple for carpet-bags, valises, or satchels, provided with the projection or fianches n or n at each end of the straight or working part of the staple-pin m, to confine the handle-cap, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
WILLIAM ROEMER.
